I can't believe you are doing this to yourself again. But, to answer your question, most people's bowel functions normalize after a few years. You learn, as you do with IBS, what sends you running to the bathroom and you avoid it. At 6 years out, I go once every morning and maybe every few days once more in the evening. Stools are generally large, soft, easy to evacuate relatively swiftly. I know how much magnesium and fat I need to keep everything regular. Anything that deviates from this means that there is another problem to be solved. A bacterial imbalance, too many carbs, an intolerance to something I am eating can all cause excessive trips to the bathroom. Pain meds constipate. After the healing phase, things get better. After the weight loss window, things calm down even more. Time fixes everything and what it can't, you can fix yourself in most cases. I was just thinking if time fixes everything my esophagus should someday return to somewhat normal. Thank you for answering my questions. Are you the norm though? I mean 1 bathroom visit a day on some days?

There is no norm. There are days when I poop once, and days when I poop 5 times. Sometime I can trace it to what I ate, but sometimes not. Read these boards - there are many, many different experiences. Some foods trigger issues for some people, and for some others, not. Some people become lactose intolerant, some not. Some people become sensitive to sugar alcohols, gluten, etc etc...and some people don't. You have absolutely no way of knowing what your experience would be. So you have to assume the worst, and hope for the best.

I mean 1 bathroom visit a day on some days? I have no knowledge of esophageal issues, so I can't speak for that. Everyone is different, but yes I consider my bathroom habits to be normal. Most days just once in the morning. If I eat too many sugar alcohols, I'm in there within a couple of hours. As it did pre-op, corn goes right through me. Like some people do with beer, I just borrow it for a brief time. A lot of fat early in the day and I'm in there in the evening. Everyone comes to know their own tolerances and rhythms. There is no shortcut for this. It is all trial and error. I would paraphrase NYB and say,"Prepare for the worst but, assume the best."

Let your mind be at peace because you're driving yourself nuts going back and forth over this
Au contrare, Lauren. I think he's fine with this. It's the rest of us that he is driving nuts.
