How does everyone feel about caffeine? What are the ups and down, in everyone's opinion, of having caffeinated beverages post-DS. I've been off it since surgery, but I really, really miss it!
Thanks ;D

I drink it on a daily basis in my coffee and diet mtn dew. Early out the carbonation can cause upset tummy, but I am 9 months out and don't have a problem. I am a caffeine addict! Might not be good for me, but my body needs it.

VSG'er, but this caught my eye. Most of the anti-caffeine stuff is an urban myth. Actual studies done on it show that it's no more dehydrating than water and that it may actually be protective against breast cancer in Post-menopausal women per the Harvard Nurse's study. They found a weak inverse link between caffeine intake and breast cancer risk (i.e, higher intake lower breast cancer rates).
I avoided coffee for 6 weeks pre-op and 6 weeks post-op per my surgeon's instructions, but I probably drink close to a pot of coffee a day. I have a sleeve and can't speak to what it does to switched innards, but It doesn't bother my (small) sleeve in the least.

I love coffee, and it's amazing to me that since my surgery on Dec. 15, I've probably consumed about 1.5 cups total. Early post-op it's probably better to avoid it or drink decaf, because caffeine can be tough on your stomach and can dehydrate, though that's more prone to larger quantities, not just a cup. But I'm sure after 3-4 months out, I'll resume. If it's a must-have for you, and you're not having trouble getting in your fluids and protein, than can't see that a cup a day would hurt :-)

I drink Diet Dr. Pepper all the time, coffee on occasion just because I don't care for it. Coffee makes my tummy rumble, but it did that before surgery. Diet sodas and other forms of caffeine have no effect on me.

Honestly, without caffeine I'd be dead.
I am a coffee in the AM person, then diet coke etc during the day. No problems.

They'll have to pry my diet coke out of my cold dead hand.... But I am down to 1 per day now instead of 2 or 3.

Different surgeons may have differing advice on it, but I was given tea and coffee with milk while still in the hospital.
I chose to avoid it during my healing phase, but did resume coffee and caffeinated drinks at 6 months or so. I drink a lot now.

I started back with coffee making protein coffees. Then, in my less than brilliance, I thought, If I can have protein coffee, I can have a real cup of coffee in the mornings.
I started a little more than one month out. I only drink one cup a day. Rarely two. It doesn't bother me. I wouldn't over do it so early but I can't see that it hurts me.

Thanks ;D I drink it daily in my hot tea and diet coke, but I'm over five years out and my blood pressure is very low. I'd wait if I were you.

My nut stated that caffeine was not allowed, ever again. When I questioned her a bit on that, she stated I could only drink it after I was able to get in 64oz of water a day. I am currently having a small addiction issue with Click, and even though I try daily, I can only get in 64oz of liquid 2 or 3 times a week. I should probably cut out the Click, but its sooo tasty.
Edited to add: Oops! Just noticed this was a DS question and I'm RNY. Sorry!

I love coffee, so I had it as soon as I got out of the hospital. I had surgery in Brazil, so the coffee was really good. Had it at least 2x a day while there. Naturally in the morning, room service and in the lobby every afternoon watching the people, it was fun.

I'm with many of the others here- I'd be worthless without it.
That said, I took it easy the first few months. I couldn't drink coffee at all for the first few months because of how bad my acid reflux was. When my iron was super freaky low, I had to take half pills of no-doz just to get through a work day (I have a very active, physical job), regardless of how much sleep I got. I've backed off a bit since then, but I get withdrawal headaches if I haven't had at least a little bit of caffeine by noon or so.

Someone said their NUT said no caffeine EVER AGAIN. Well, one of my NUTS told me NO FAT, and to never eat bacon. Same NUT later told me I needed MORE calories, that I wasn't eating enough, so I should go higher fat. My point is: NUTs can be stupid, just like regular people.
So......I drink two big cups of coffee when I get up at 3am for work, mixed with chocolate protein powder. And I eat BACON every day now, and full fat EVERYTHING.
Lesson to be learned is that everyone is responsible for themselves. Educate yourself and listen to your body. Do what is right for you.

Diet sodas and other forms of caffeine have no effect on me. I second this, except i drink diet cherry Dr. Pepper. same thing with coffee , it has always had a laxative effect on me, and it still does.

As I recall, my surgeon recommended avoiding coffee for a couple months post-op, as the acid can be an irritant to the staple line. I returned to coffee after about a two month period and have been drinking a couple cups daily ever since.

My post OP instructions were to have no caffeine till month 6, because of it causing cravings for sugar, I was told. At 6 months up to 20 oz are allowed. I did have caffeine to help me drive to Florida and back over the holidays . I tripled my SF mint hard candies during this time, could be caffeine related. I need the caffeine to get through my days. One more month to go to be 6 months out from surgery. In the mean time dark chocolate protein bars, protein hot chocolate, and dark chocolate roasted almonds help give me a boost in the morning, and afternoon.

These are all great responses! I especially like the "you will have to pry the Diet Coke out of my cold, dead hands!" I am going to back to work tomorrow (I'm a teacher) and I'm wondering if my energy level will be high enough. I will try and hold out as long as possible!

Yes to caffeine. I like ice tea so its in that and here lately I have been craving cold canned coke. That really throws me off since I am a Dr Pepper drinker from birth.

During the healing process - it's known to slow down your healing. Once that's done, I say caffeine is one of those things that nobody will say is healthy for you, but IMHO, it's an acceptable vice for me.

My doc cleared me to have coffee after I saw him at the 3 week check up. Still, I've never liked the feeling that caffein gives my body so I still avoid it and drink decaf. But on occasion I have had a diet soda with caffein and at 7 weeks out I've had no problems.

No one would tolerate me without my morning coffee. I usually drink close to a pot a day. I am 16 months post op.

I drink a bigass 24 oz coffee every morning, with ALOT of heavy whipping cream ans splenda. I drank it as a protein coffee very early out for a couple years until I lost my taste for it. Initially, I seriously CRAVED the taste of it, but right now, I can't stand protein coffee. It comes and goes for me
