How does everyone feel about caffeine? What are the ups and down, in everyone's opinion, of having caffeinated beverages post-DS. I've been off it since surgery, but I really, really miss it! Thanks ;D I haven't read all of the responses, but for the first few months when I was having trouble staying hydrated I avoided all caffeine because it made me feel dry as a mummy. Once my stomach healed to the point where I could chug water again and I cold drink enough water to offset the dehydrating nature of cafiene, I went back to my wonderful teas. I'm not much of a coffee person, but I LOVE tea. I think caffeine is one of those wonderful things that has demonized by the health craze. I ignore the scare tactics. Geeze, these days everything is bad for you. Did you know oxygen can be poisonous (true at high concentrations!)? I'm waiting for the idiot shock doc like Dr. Oz to have a TV show like "DON'T BREATHE!! IT CAN KILL YOU!!!".

I do the protein coffee thing every morning and decafe protein as needed/wanted throughout the day. I count the decafe as part of my fluid intake. I try to stay away from the diet pepsi but still have one now and then.

I avoided coffee for 6 weeks post-op, just because of the acidity. But caffeine is no problem, and I drink coffee now every morning.

I'm glad you mentioned that you can chug water because I have chugged since surgery too ;D I thought we weren't supposed and I don't often, but if I am super freaking thirsty, I just can't take tiny sips. As long as I'm not eating, it seems to be fine. I have no problem getting in my liquids, so I'm going to try it out in another 2 weeks when I will have 2 months under my belt. Great convo, everyone!

lol @ Shannds!
I never liked coffee, before or after my DS. I am, however, an iced tea addict (that really is MY coffee, gotta have it a.m., afternoon, dinner, night, etc.). I drink it with a packet of splenda because that the way I prefer the taste. I can remember early post op not wanting it AT ALL and living on sugar free Tang and Rasberry Ice Crystal Light! That only lasted a couple months, now I'm definitely back to my iced tea habits.

My dr. said I could drink caffeine again at a few weeks out, but I had already changed most of my caffeinated beverages to decaf quite a while pre-op and just left it that way. I have caffeinated once in a while. I count it all in my fluid intake.

Thank God (and you too Bry) for this post lol. I too am addicted to Diet Coke and I had resigned myself to the fact that it might have to be my dirty little post-op secret because I have no intention of giving it up for a moment longer than I have to unless my taste changes completely lol. This DS thing just keeps gettin better! ;D

I was given coffee in the hospital after my DS. I drank Starbucks on the ride home. Caffeine is part of my daily routine.
My standard thought process is to count caffeinated fluids as half the actual volume drunk going toward my daily fluid requirements. I do this because if the diuretic effect of caffeine. So, if I drink a 20 oz coffee, I only count it as 10 oz net toward my 64+ oz daily requirement. Keeps me out of trouble.
YMMV.
