Copied from a personal message at bboop's request: I recently had an emergency operation for an small intestinal blockage. When I went back to get part of my staples removed, the doc told me to get a binder. I have it now. It's getting to be uncomfortable, and I've been wearing it 24/7...except in the shower. Can I take it off for part of the day if I'm at home in the bed or must I wear it all the time? Yesterday I think I had it on way too tight...I had a miserable evening and threw up plus I couldn't eat anything - finally I was able to get down some yogurt right before bed. I honestly think it was on too tight. This thing is really irritating..it's for the entire abdomen, and my surgical scar is from belly button to the pubis. Lovely, huh? I have the top part turned down since there's no scar above my belly button. Any suggestions would be helpful. Oh yes, and the doc that is seeing me didn't do the surgery. The doc that did it is on call to Seton so he doesn't have an office out here. The doc that saw me said you are going to get a surgical hernia...I assume he means were the scar is...how can he tell that. I've had no problems with my incision and I keep it clean and dry. I was shocked. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Kelly.
I had a really lousy Sat night...threw up a couple of times but I know I did it to myself. I kept my granddaughter and it was just too much. She's 10 and is easy to keep but going to get our nails done, to the grocery where she was extremely helpful, lifted dog food and peach iced tea for me, then to Dickie's for barbecue...which I couldn't eat. It was way too much.
Any suggestions on the binder will be greatly appreciated.
Oh, I found some chips...yes, chips..it has five carbs per bag...small bag. They are Quest Protein Chips and made with protein powder. They have 21 grams of protein per bag. I just tried them and they aren't potato chips but they aren't bad, at all.

It is about supporting your abdominal muscle wall to allow the internal incisions to heal completely, so you don't get a hernia. A surgical hernia has nothing to do with your incision and scar. It's about your abdominal muscle wall - the internal incision/s.

So keep that binder rolled up and keep it on until your doctor says you can take it off. It may be uncomfortable now, but no where near as uncomfortable as another hernia would be.

The doc I'm seeing said I would get a hernia...that's pretty tasteless I think. I can't believe he said that...but I've been wearing it since I got it. And I will wear it until he says I can take it off. Damn it! I loathe this thing..

I have no personal experience with a binder, but a good friend had one after her DS.... She didn't enjoy it either, but her misery was lessened by wearing a nice silk undershirt/camisole, something like that. It was far less annoying for her.

I left out the part where it goes between you and the binder. Derp.

I've been reading and following this thread knowing I will soon be wearing the binder after hernia and diastasis repair (along with skin removal.) I'm already dreading it, warm weather, trying to move, and wearing this restrictive binder, uuuugggghhhhh! Feel good knowing yours will be all gone when I'm just starting to wear mine (then you can give me sympathy!)
So sorry you are having such a time tough time. Sending hugs and well wishes for a speedy recovery!

I wore a thin shirt under the binder to sop up the sweat and avoid the rubbing. I couldn't get comfortable with or without it. It just sucks. It was weeks before I could even wear under wear without it hurting. Did I mention it sucks?!!!

Thanks everybody. I got the last of my staples out yesterday and now I only have steri strips...but I still have the damn binder. He said I could get a girdle that holds in the tummy...so I ordered girdles. We will see if they fit. Part of the problem is my panni and I'm NOT going to have it removed because I'm sick of abdominal surgeries. I'll live, but I sure do so long for those carefree days without this damn binder.
I'm doing well now. Still get tired after doing one thing out of the house each day. One day I did too much, but I learned and I won't be doing all that again. Today's activity will involve going to the bank to the drive through...that's just pitiful, isn't it? Ha ha!
Again thanks to all of you - I know you have heard it before, but you guys are just the best. Absolutely!
