Hi Everyone - this is my first post here I have been banded for close to five years now. I have had no problem with my band, except that I've only been able to lose 20 pounds since I got my band . I get plenty of exercise (I ran a half marathon last weekend), but I'm stubbornly stuck at the 34-bmi plateau. I am looking into a revision into either a VSG or a DS. Have any of you had a DS or a DS revision when your BMI was less than 35? Any thoughts or bits of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, mar! Welcome!
There are some revisionistas on this site! Please be patient, as I know some of them are traveling over the holidays. Stand by, okay?

Most insurance companies require a BMI of at least 35 if that includes two co-morbidities. If you are self pay, you may be able to find a surgeon willing to work with you.
Off hand, I don't recall any revisions with a BMI of less than 35. That doesn't mean that there aren't any. As the lovely Monica noted, it is slow right now with the holiday season. Give us a week or so and someone might have some first hand experience to share with you. I HAVE known people who had a virgin DS with a BMI of 35 and they have done very well.
Welcome!

Having the band for 5 years and only being able to lose 20 lbs, I think you made a good decision into looking into a different surgery. Happy New Year

Hello,
I'm in the same boat but had diabetes and my band kept making me vomit. I was approved very quickly through Dr. Greenbaum's office (three times I might add because I kept chickening out two years in a row!) He's great, gave me a third chance, and a new life. I actually can't believe how great life is being healthier and able to move more freely. I thought I loved life before, this has just become an amazing journey!
Good luck with your decision, Kelly

Hello Everyone -
Thanks for all the responses. It's good to know that my situation is not unique. What prompted me to look into a revision is that I seem to have all the symptoms of a slipped band. I have an appointment with a DS surgeon in a week, so hopefully I'll get some answers at that time.
Has anybody had a DS revision after a slipped band?

Hi Mar63, I have a band to DS revision, my BMI was higher than yours, plus I had High Blood pressure, a slip band, night aspiration and heart problems. For one year my esophagus worked as my stomach because the scare tissue around the band close completely. My band slip twice the first time it corrected itself the second time it almost kill me. I would suggest you see a surgeon that is experience at doing revisions. My revision took longer than most (6hours) because of all the scar tissues around where the band was placed.

Hello again
I saw a DS surgeon last week. I won't say who (yet), but he was on this site's list of vetted surgeons. Anyhow, the surgeon said I was a good candidate for a revision to either the VSG or the DS. Due to my sleep apnea, I am leaning towards choosing the DS, mostly because I want to assure myself I'll have good long term results. I want this to be my last Bariatric surgery!
Has anybody else chosen a DS over a VSG?

Not all DS surgeons are qualified to do revisions. Bands can cause a lot of damage. They are far from being the "least invasive" bariatric surgery.
While the DS will help you lose the most weight, it might not cure your sleep apnea. It often does and, if nothing else, it improves it. But, some people never fully lose their apnea.
Most people here have chosen the DS over the VSG.
There is a saying we repeat frequently, "Think twice, cut once."

But they suspect a slipped band that needs to come out.

When I saw the DS surgeon last week, he emptied my band. I had an appointment with my PCP this morning, and my BMI was almost 36. I gained almost 10 pounds in less than a week! Ouch!

depending on how long you have to wait for surgery, gaining all the weight back is typical

Never fun seeing the scale go up. On the bright side, the higher your weight to a 40 bmi, the easier it is to get insurance to pay for your revision.

Hello Everyone Sorry I haven’t followed up on this thread in a while. Last week I had an evaluation with both a psychologist and a nutritionist. The good news is psychologist said I wasn’t crazy The nutritionist gave me some frank advice about my diet, and said I was a good DS candidate. Anyhow, I’m right now waiting anxiously for approval for surgery from my insurance company.
