Had pain last night and then again today. Followed my gut instinct and came to El Camino hospital in mountain view since I knew Dr Rabkin has rights here. Just found out I have an obstruction. They are admitting me but there isn't an immediate plan for surgery. I'm scared. Pray for me please. Cathy

I asked them to tell him. There are other bariatric surgeons here but he is the only DS one. I told them to contact him for that reason. This isn't his primary hospital and is about an hour a way.

Call him yourself. Leave an urgent message with his service, and ask him to call you back on your cellphone. Now.

Hernia that was causing a partial obstruction. Push to make sure the surgeon sees you, not just his Resident (s). I can understand you being afraid but my surgery was just a little over an hour and went off without issue. Hopefully you have a great surgeon doing your fix for you like I did, so good luck and I am confident you will be better soon.

And when I had an obstruction, I had two open surgeries in 48 hours, and was in the step-down unit. And there's somebody else on this board (songbird?) who had an obstruction and required a bowel resection, which is quite serious. There are different types of obstructions, different locations…please do not go by anyone else's experiences. The longer a complete obstruction is allowed to remain (depending on its nature), the greater the likelihood of necrosis.

I'm so sorry you're going through this, and what NYB is saying is spot on, definitely stay very on top of this. Can Dr. Rabkin treat you at CPMC? Hang in there, and definitely keep us posted on your progress. And when I had an obstruction, I had two open surgeries in 48 hours, and was in the step-down unit. Was this caused by your DS? Is this a common issue for DS'ers?
Good luck to you and best wishes for a speedy resolution!

Is is a risk with any surgery involving the intestines. . She is 5 or olmost 5 years out, is it a risk at any point in our lives then? Even this far out? I was thinking it would be something to worry about only shortly after surgery, this is scares me. Wishing you fast recovery sweety.

Yes, it is a risk at any point. I had a bowel obstruction (and emergency surgery) 2 years after my DS.
