So I spoke to Dr. Greenbaum today on the phone for my 1 month post op. He cleared me to move ahead with eating but I'm not sure that's a good idea or what to start with so I figured I'd ask!
I still have very bad pain above the incision at the breast bone. Can't keep my bra on long and at times can't stand straight up and he claims it will just take time.
I told him I've thrown up 3 times and he was just like yeah it happens but I don't want to throw up. I really can't eat much at all mainly I've eaten eggs, egg drop soup, mashed potatoes, cream cheese and ricotta cheese.
I tried tuna fish with mayo and threw that up. I threw up loose scramble eggs once and I threw up after eating some puréed roast beef.
I'm like dying to eat but I'm afraid to throw up which isn't good cause then I get bad acid from not eating on time.
Any suggestions?

I would say to give it more time...I know you didn't want to hear that. If the pain in the breastbone area doesn't fade away, then call Greenbaum again. He's a nice guy and will help you. One month out isn't very long at all. It sounds like you are eating too much and maybe too fast. I know it's hard when you are hungry, that's why we tell people to eat a couple of bites every hour or two. If you become really hungry, then your tummy will reject all food. I know I'm over 6 years out and to this day I get the hunger pangs and I know it's been too long since I age something. Your food choices sound good...the roast beef, even pureed is not the best choice, some can eat it other not. Listen, I threw up eggs at least twice before I got the message not to eat them for a while...after just a little bit I have been able to eat them all the time. Try cottage cheese, there's a SF jello pudding that's good, perhaps a soup pureed...only just a little to see how it sits on your new tummy. It's a difficult thing to wrap our heads around...we were used to eating a lot of food, and some of us fast, now you can't. Hey, that's why you had this surgery. Learn to take just a couple maybe three bites and then wait. See how it settles. This is definitely a trial and error sort of time for you as it is for most of us. Not what you wanted to hear, but it really is. Take it slow and steady...I know you are hungry and have pain but try eating every hour...just a nibble, nothing much and see how you do. How about nuking a sweet potato...put some butter and cinnamon on it. Just nibble on it - learn to take small bites. Give your tummy a new message, here comes some food, but only a little. I'm drawing a blank on food right now. I've had a rough day...somebody will chime in here in a minute. Please call Greenbaum if the pain persists. I actually get a pain in my breastbone area to this day when I'm hungry. It burns. Also, are you taking a PPI? If not start immediately. Some of us take one a day others two. There are planty of OTC PPI's that can help with the heartburn. Hang in there sweetie, it will get better I promise. Oh just so you know, I ate pizza the other night...threw up the excess. I just eat the topping. I waited too long to eat and back it came. So in some ways you aren't alone in this. I haven't done that in years. Just goes to show you, not all of us use good judgement all of the time.

Lisa - if you read my post from Full Liquid Diet Post Operative Food Choices. I had so many issues with indigestion that the only thing I could really tolerate was Greek yogurt and cheese. That is what I ate for an entire month. But now I am 2.5 months out and pretty much eat what I what, but I watch my carb intake. I think you could be eating too fast. I also threw up the tuna with mayo the first time I tried it. Now I can eat it with no problem. Things will get better you just have to give it some time.

Just goes to show you, not all of us use good judgement all of the time. I take 2 PPI a day. I was having a lot of acid problems and upd it. I still have it I notice when I don't eat soon enough. Problem I'm having is what can I eat that doesn't require being cooked or in the fridge so I have it with me all the time. That seems to be my biggest problem I'm going to long between eating. Get yourself one of those fridge like carry alls. They come in all sizesl and some come with an ice pack to keep things cool. Hey, it's worth it to get you over the hump. Google it or go to WalMart or Target and search for one. I'm sure they will have them because school has started and Lord knows every kid I know carries one. Check them out. That way you can carry Greek yoghurt and cottage cheese, even Ricotta...spice that one up with SF preserves or something salty. You can have just about any assortment of cheese you want. I had forgotten how much I like blu cheese...yummy.
Have you ever thought about chicken Vienna sausages...those tiny ones on the canned meat isle. I like them and since you can't eat a whole can, that would be a good meat to carry at this point in your DS journey.
And they also make a small thermos for things you want to keep hot. I used to carry one to work all the time.
Think out of the box...improvise if you have to. You can do this. It isn't easy at first but you will get the hang of it. Don't despair - It will get better.

Lisa you can carry lots of stuff without refrigeration: hard boiled eggs, nuts, beef jerky, bonbel cheeses, cheese sticks (I like the organic valley ones), peanut butter on whole wheat, salami…nothing will happen if these things are not refrigerated for a day.
Personally, I wouldn't eat those canned sausages - the sodium content is so high.
Also for stuff you want to keep cold, you can just get an insulated lunchbox and put an ice pack in it (like I do for my kid's lunch every day)…

I wouldn't eat any bread, whole wheat or not. Otherwise, NYB gave you some excellent suggestions.
I, too, suspect that you are trying to eat too much at once. Eat no more than a 1/4 cup of food at a time slowly. Put your fork down between every bite. Chew it well. Give it a couple of hours. Then have another 1/4 cup. If you eat too much at once, it will come back up. There is no prescription but self control to stop that.
You are still very early out. Your stomach is still healing. Go slowly and be gentle with it.

Personally, I wouldn't eat those canned sausages - the sodium content is so high Since my DS I have dramatically increased the amount of salt I eat. I was never a fan, but I have been following my body and my Sodium levels are perfect. I add a pinch of salt to everything - even my coffee. I use Himalayan sea salt because it tastes great. I often add add Bovril - I don't know what you call it, but the salty black stuff in a little bottle - to slices of cheese. Our biltong -jerky- is also very salty and I love it.

I think eating some whole grain is just fine, as long as your carb intake for the day is on target.

I eat with children's forks and spoons and I have small plates and bowls and measure and take my time atleast 20 min or more. Problem is sometimes I take 2 bites and I'm ready to explode others I can eat it all. It's different that my RYN and I just need to figure it out. Just tired of eating the same stuff and looking for suggestions, which I got some good ones! Thanks! Lisa

I have trouble eating a whole egg yet I think the bread would just be like a lead balloon right now. I've been looking into low carb breads and bread crumbs, mixes, for the future so when I feel like having some I can. But thanks for all the ideas! Lisa

I have used almond meal and parmesian cheese as a substitute for bread crumbs. If you do low carb bread - you can toast it and make your own bread crumbs just a thought. There are some cloud bread recipes on the net.
