Hi everyone So I'm trying to wrap my head around all of this. Before with my RNY I would get dumping syndrome if I are to high fat or sugar. But now with DS that won't happen? Am I correct? It seems I can eat anything but my "poop" or gas will pay for it. I'm still focusing on protein everyday but have to watch my carbs now? Is that correct? I just had surgery 8/18/14 so any info if appreciate . Thanks

Eat as much as you like when your new digestive system can handle it. Sugar is a carb and you would be best served for maximum weight loss to keep all carbs under 50 grams a day. No you shouldn't have dumping syndrome because your pyloric valve is regulating their release into your intestines. Your protein intake should be 30 grams a day by 30 days out from surgery. 60 grams by 60 days and 90 grams by 90 days. Once you have healed enough to handle it, the minimum amount of protein you should have daily is 90 grams. Your main focus as a new post op should be on liquids. You need to drink at least 64 ounces a day. Often this requires people to take constant small sips all day long. Nothing else is more important. Dehydration hits quickly and can send you right back into the hospital. Left untreated, it is deadly.

Lisa - there will be no dumping syndrome. Did Greenbaum do the DS or distal? I have been waiting to hear from you about your surgery. You should be going home today. You are leaving me hanging. Follow the diet, but do not worry about fat grams. Make sure you get your protein and fluids requirements.
Good luck

You are correct although there are some situations where the symptoms might appear the same. Dumping for RnY is really a byproduct of having a pouch with no pyloric valve to slow down the food going down. Usually revisions get back a fully functioning stomach with the pyloric valve. I think there may be some revision situations where that doesn't happen but it seems rare.
Sometimes overfilling the stomach can cause some symptoms like dumping but the cause in the body is different and not related to things like sugar at all.
Yes - to get the best results high protein low carb. Early out carbs and fat may cause bathroom issues and possibly after that. More of a learning/testing experience on carbs. Fats you will also have to experiment with what is a good level for your body. Even with the malabsorption you will be pretty sensitive the first couple of months. After that you will have to see if adding extra fat helps you or not.
The only accommodation I made was to stop buying low fat foods and I no longer try and avoid fatty meats ans things like mayo. Some people add fat if they are regularly constipated and there are plenty of stories of people trying to break stalls with things like a couple of Krispy Kreme donuts. LOL. Not something that ever worked for my stalls.
Congrats on the surgery. It should work better for you than the gastric bypass.
Pete

I tried numerous times to go on Facebook and always passed out in the middle lol I've been having a rough time with pain being cut open from my breast bone to under my belly button. I can only take morphine cause I'm allergic to everything else. I had a really horrible first 3 days and most of it was the nurse in ICU which I stayed in for 3 days. He did the DS. I have all the instructions and Lisa was in to see me I should be leaving in about an hour. I've just had so much pain meds I want to ask questions and make sure I get it right. I've been having nausea problems and right now got the runs. I had to have 2 picc lines put in! The first one was hitting a nerve and had to be taken out. I really don't like them lol she just pulled the other one out and I have to wait and hour before I can leave. They also still stuck me for blood I look like a bruised pin cushion. I'm glad it's over and look forward to what lies ahead and apologize for not getting back to you sooner you really have been very helpful and supportive

OMG - does that bring back nightmares. I hated the tubing and it was with me for 18 days. Purple is my favorite color, but I did not like it on my arms. I experienced hell with one ICU nurse. It was a yelling match with her when I went into ventricular tachycardia. I could not wait to get away from this woman. J4 had great nurses and I was in ICU for 3 days as well. You should be home tonight. Take it easy and you may tire easy. I took 4 hour naps every day. Don't worry - this could be normal. Your energy will come back slowly. Good luck in your recovery.

OMG really???!!! Was it a Deb or Denice? Older gray haired woman? She was absolute HELL!! Lisa came and saw how upset I was and that I had yet to be out of bed on the second day or do any of my breathing and I started crying how no one is helping me and getting me so upset and she saw it with her own eyes cause the woman came in yelling at me again over me asking for more pain medicine claiming dr. Greenbaum did not call her back, yet she was the only one who had a problem, and telling me my medicine is working fine cause she's been in here and I've been snoring away. I said just cause I pass out from you pushing my pump constantly doesn't mean my pain is fine and why she wouldn't let me use the toilet 3' away I will never understand. She just wanted to reinsert the cath. I nominated Liz S. For a daisy award. She was an angel and if she didn't come in that night I honestly think I would have had a stroke from how high my blood pressure was from the pain and fighting with this nurse. I also told them my horror story and they came to speak with me and are going to call me Monday or Tuesday after they do an investigation. You should tell them what happen to you as well cause no one should go through that. Absolute horror. The nurses on the 4th floor were very nice and helpful. I'll have my tubes in me till Sept 3 when I see Dr. Greenbaum. Yes, purple does not look good all over your body. I tried covering up my arms and my son just saw it and got upset but he's a good boy. He gave me his blankie to snuggle with lol it's just so good to be home

The nurse that game me trouble had short brown hair. If I remember there was a young nurse with long curly hair who was great while I was in ICU. I ended up writing a letter and sending it with my survey. If I ever had another surgery with Dr. G. - he cannot put me in ICU. It is ridiculous. I was able to get out of bed - I know it was after 11:00 pm. I did walked several times a day, but I was able to unhook myself and just dragged my IV pole with me. Glad that you are home and this stress leading up to this special event is now over. Rest and take time to heal.

But, I am also so proud of you for standing up for yourself and doing something about it. Besides helping those who come after you, your willingness to speak up for yourself demonstrates to me that you have the gumption to be a successful DSer.

Lisa - So sorry you had such a horrible hospital experience (brought back memories for me).
The doctor should have given you something for nausea. The only thing you need to think about once you get home is staying hydrated and resting. Walk around your home for exercise and then go back to bed. If you have a recliner set yourself up.
Hopefully the hospital will follow through about the abusive situation. That is completely unacceptable.
