Nothing like going for major surgery and having your mother keep you up the entire night begging you not to do it! As if my nerves weren't already shot my darling mother was nice enough to try to guilt me into not having my surgery today. Telling me I'm obsessed with weight loss and I'm lying about being scared not being able to see in my stomach after my grandmother died from stomach cancer. I've been looking into this for a year and yes I want to lose weight but honestly being around 160/170 would be fine with me. My main reason for this is to have "1" stomach they can see easily into so I don't have to worry every pain I have isn't the start of something. I know I worry or obsess over it since my grandma died but a year later they were removing polyps from my moms stomach too and thank god they weren't cancer. Is it so wrong or crazy that I'm worried about stomach cancer and want the peace of mind to know they can check easily and quickly if I didn't have a RYN stomach and just had the one? I have to be there in 8 minutes and now I'm so confused and upset I don't know what to do

Lisa, have the DS, IMO, you better off with one stomach, and keeping your pylorus valve. Kick you mom out of your room, don't let her do that to you, that's not even nice..

Ask your doctor if it will make you feel better. You will have one stomach, not a "blind" or split off area. In fact you could probably make an arguement you'll have less stomach so less chance for stomach cancer but I'm not sure that is medically sound.
Obesity is a big risk for many different types of cancer. Think of it that way.
Your mom is probably coming from a place of concern, but is not informed and not helping you.

I think you have made a very good decision for your overall health. Your mom is just scared. Don't let her scare you.
Bon voyage. See you on the other side...

If stomach cancer is your primary concern, here's a quote from the National Cancer Institute: Obese people who have bariatric surgery appear to have lower rates of obesity-related cancers than obese people who did not have bariatric surgery. www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/obesity
