Everything is going well with my postop diet. I tend to take my vitamins 30 minutes before I eat. Last Friday I took my lunch time vitamins at 11:00 am, then at 11:30 I ate for lunch which was 2 string cheese.
I had an errand to run and had to pick up a friend. She offered me a piece of gum and I took it. It was sugarless. I got so nauseous and sick to my stomach and ended up throwing away the gum. But the damage was already done and the acid was hitting me. I had to find a bathroom to throw up lunch.
I will not do that again. Has anyone else experienced this situation?

You know, people can have issue with sugar-free/sugar alternative products generally speaking. It might not bother you later, it changes up. I'll be 3 years out in December and just now going through a few things that bother me now that didn't before. It's really different for everyone. I can't handle sugar alcohols and now, some gluten free products that have been stand-bys for me, they send me to the bathroom LOVE your new photo, you look lovely, so soft and pretty!

Cindy, Your picture looks amazing! Sorry, I haven't tried gum but wanted t say hi and comment on your puncture. Take care, Kelly Thank you so much. I needed to change it because of the weight loss that I had. I found a picture of myself from 2011 and I couldn't believe that I let myself look like that. Why did I not choose this surgery much earlier. I hope your recovery is going well. I am taking Omedprazole 40 mg and I am now taking this when I have the acid. I found that sometime it occurs after lunch and it does relieve the acid. That is about the only time of the day it occurs.

You are taking it incorrectly and you are putting yourself at risk. Omeprazole is cumulative, it is a PPI. It must be taken every day. You should, at this stage, be taking 20mg in the morning and 20mg in the evening. You should not have any heartburn, at all. This is especially important for the first 6 months post-op.

I take 40 mg Omeprazole twice daily. Why? About 3 years ago I didn't realize how bad my GERD was so I only took prilosec OTC when I thought I needed it. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!! I now have Barrett's esophagus and am at risk of developing esophageal cancer. I NEVER miss a dose of my Omeprazole.

20 mg per day works for me now too, but for a long time I needed it twice a day.

For the first couple of years I took 20 twice a day. Now I only need one a day. But, yes, Omeprazole is something that you need to take every day regularly. I ate sugar free candy early out. It was my go-to for constipation. But, it never made me nauseous. I chew sf gum often now when I feel like munching something, but I am not hungry. Works like a charm.

I have one pill that is 40 mg. Not 20 mg taken 2x a day. But I find that in morning when I take it I end up with some acid later in the day. So when should I be taking this pill? I will address this with Dr. Greenbaum next Wednesday to see if he wants to change the dosage or times that I should be taking this. Thank you for all of your suggestions.

You can buy it OTC 20mg. Take one in the morning and one in the evening. The problem with taking it only once a day is that it doesn't last for the whole 24 hours, which is why you would have breakthrough heartburn. You don't need a prescription for omeprazole 20mg.
You could also take ranitidine (zantac) later in the day.

Thank you. I am going to speak with Greenbaum about it and I may just purchase it myself.

Nothing worked for me except for dexilant. I used to have terrible acid reflux. I take it once at night. I have zero issue with acid or heartburn now. I had my first piece of sf gum right after my 1 month post op. No nausea.

Yes! Mint gum makes me terribly nauseated! I now chew the Ice Breakers lemon.

I'm going to say this again: surgeons are not GI doctors.
