I finally went! This struggling for days method isn't gonna work though. I have to figure out what to do to get regular.
Regular??? Is that a thing anymore?!!!

Isn't it ironic, after all the fears about uncontrollable diarrhea people spout about the DS, you are proving them SO wrong? Here's the list, how are you doing on it? 1. Add fat 2. Avoid fiber 3. Eat some sf candy Are you taking Magnesium Oxide, yet? Everyone has their own version of "normal", but eventually you will discover what works for you. And then it will change again.

I'm telling ya! But I figure that could all change in a heartbeat so I'm not going to get used to anything.
Not sure I even know what magnesium oxide is.
I will add in some fat. I just bought some sf life savers when I bought the grape juice. What in that helps?

Artificial sweeteners trigger pooping for most of us, to a greater or lesser degree. (Actually, eat enough of it, and pre DS they did it, for me.)

Spent the night before last pooping my brains out. Finally figured out what the culprit was-I had had 3(!) glasses of milk before bed. (Couldn't have been the Chips Ahoy).
This also happened to me when I tried using heavy cream in my coffee in place of half n half, so I guess I have developed a slight lactose intolerance.

I finally went! This struggling for days method isn't gonna work though. I have to figure out what to do to get regular. Regular??? Is that a thing anymore?!!! You are wayyyyyy to early post op to even think about what 'regular' might be! It's going to take a good while before your system heals itself on the inside, you're looking at least 6 weeks there; and then it will change again and continue to change as you progress your food, introduce new things, go through the trial and error. Things get better in increments/estimated 'bench marks' in terms of time - like 6 weeks for major healing, 3 months for the worst of the healing phase to subside, 6 months where you start feeling more 'normal' and 8-10 months when the patterns start to emerge indicating more of 'how it will be' long term. And then you reach a year and beyond, and it changes more. So. Everything IS new now, and I'm sure you have questions every 10 minutes, I think you post a lot of what others newbies 'think' but don't always write I love that you've made the support board as close to a live support group as you can. So yes, this mama bear isn't going anywhere any time soon And I came back to add, be careful for what you wish for...just wait til you start pooping in all kinds of new and exciting colors and shapes! I went through a phase between 2 and 3 months where I asked my surgeon, are you kidding me??!! HOW can I possibly poop this much when I barely eat?! And what the hell is up with the mountain formations and green?!

Yeah I'm not one to sit and wonder when I can open my mouth and ask. I hope it does help some shy soul through a rough minute.
Good to know those benchmarks! I've actually been wondering what they might be.
By the way, if a person like us were to have ...say...ice cream...not that I would do that! What might be a good choice be? Or is that a solid no?

I just bought some sf life savers when I bought the grape juice. What in that helps? Magnesium Oxide is a mineral supplement, found in the store with the vitamins, that helps you poop. I take it twice daily, once with my iron and one later in the evening. I become constipated without it It is the sugar alcohols in the sf candy that make you go. Anything sugar free that has an ingredient ending in --itol has sugar alcohols in it. They are known for loosening stools in everyone, not just bariatric patients. But, especially early out, they tend to hit us harder than most. They were even on an episode of "House". Young guy in the clinic complaining about constant diarrhea while chewing gum. House said,"Let me guess, you've recently quit smoking and are chewing a lot of sugar free gum."

Amy, I think we are having pretty similar experiences - from the not sleeping and pain to boredom. My incisions still hurt a bit and I'm still taking my pain meds. I'm taking liquid Optalgin (aka metamizole or dipyrone) every six hours. It does a great job, btw. Like yours, my back is killing me. I think it's because it's compensating for our abs which have been cut and are therefore not being used. My incisions are really itchy and I'm hoping that will improve tomorrow morning when the nurse removes my staples. Bending to pick something off the floor is still painful unless I do a deep squat to avoid using my core at all. I'm sleeping on my back propped up with pillows which is not really comfortable and definitely having an impact on my ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. I can't wait till I can sleep on my side or stomach again! I'm also experiencing pretty severe cabin fever. I was ok for the first 2-3 days but even then I spent much of my time organizing tradesmen and other projects which I never have time for when I'm working. Over the past week I've had home projects completed that have been waiting for at least a year and one that was waiting for about three years! I'm not very good at being sick so there's nothing like bossing other people around to keep the boredom at bay! I have zero concentration span. I can't seem to read or even watch a tv show for more than a few minutes. Today I was dreaming about a trip to IKEA to get a bookshelf for my daughters' room just as an excuse to get out of the house until a good friend reminded me that I do not have the stamina yet to do that. Maybe tomorrow ... How are you today? - Lisa/Butterfly

Watch it with the Optalgin. I wouldn't take that stuff more than a few days no matter what. You can google all about it. Please talk to your doctor about it.

You said just about everything to a T! Do you have a recliner you can sleep in? I lived in my Hubs! I just gave it back to him today and moved to the couch. It also reclines only the footrest is harder to push down than the one on his chair. I'm ready to have my nail polish and girly stuff in arms reach again I hope you feel better tomorrow! I feel great today. My best day by far. I only hope I didn't push my luck since I didn't want to sit down much. I made Myself between everything I did. I was able to wash my my bedclothes and hang them on the line and put my bed back together. I went for a walk... Maybe a quarter a mile. And I made dinner. I had my daughter get some deli pepperonie and broiled it to make it crispy then added cheese to make mini pizzas. I also rolled mozzarella cheese sticks in some egg and then parm cheese and cooked them. When it was all done I didn't eat one bite of any of it!!! I had no desire my family said it was good. And zero carbs lots of protein too. I'll have a yogurt later. I'm not comfortable with the rock that all food seems to sit in my stomach as so yogurt and protein shakes are my fave right now. My back is for sure killing me! And I didn't get as much water in today. I can see why people have commented about getting busy and forgetting to drink. I'll for sure work on that tomorrow. We are on the downhill slide I think! Hang in there!

Thank you NYB, I realize Optalgin is problematic but I don't mind taking it for a week or two if necessary. It is available in liquid form and is gentle on the stomach and was prescribed by my surgeon so I will stick with it for now.

Yay Amy! I'm so glad you had a good day.
I don't think I could have put sheets on my mattress as that involves a lot of bending and stretching so you must be doing really well!
I did a bit of cooking on Friday too including a couple of soups. I was trying to use up some stuff from my feezer so I kind of experimented. One turned out well - I used left over broccoli, cauliflower and edamame which I sauteed with onions and garlic then added chicken broth and pureed when done. It's yummy and the edamame and chicken broth should give it a decent protein value.
The other one was green beens and tofu but the tofu didn't puree well and it was all grainy. I assume I used the wrong type of tofu.
Plain chicken broth has been a staple for me and I'm going to have to try making egg drop soup out of it. I think I'll add some lemongrass from my garden too. The plain chicken soup is getting boring.
Do you have any other ideas?
Lisa

Thanks I am doing so good thankfully! You are on full liquid or puréed? Either way I lived on yogurt, jello, and EAS protein shakes. (Vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry) I couldn't stand broth. I come to the realization that I'm just going to be bored with food for a while. I think it will be a while before we can get too creative. Hopefully I am wrong, but I like maybe 3 things either it tastes funny or it sits like a rock in my stomach. Let me know if you find anything that works good for you!

So I tried a protein coffee this morning and had almost instant nausea. I know I'm not lactose intolerant as I've had plenty of dairy products. It might have just been too rich.
Technically I am supposed to be on full liquids but I found puréed foods in small amounts sitting better in my stomach. I'm listening to my body and trusting it.
The weird thing is I am craving pickles. I momentarily entertained the thought of sipping the liquid but common sense intervened fortunately to stop me.
This journey really is a case of YMMV.

Butterfly, That is so odd about the protein making you sick. Wonder what the hell it is. I heard someone else say they were craving pickles. I wonder if it's a sodium thing? I have been craving Salt like crazy. My goal for this week is to up my protein and take walks a few times a day. I took a mile walk this morn already. And I have a pork roast thawing for tomorrow. Have no idea what I'll do with it. Thinking roast and carnitas with the leftovers. I should be able to mash that up enough. This feeling of swallowing rocks is making me not want to eat or drink at all

Meq, it doesn't hurt at all in my throat. And oddly it doesn't seem to be in my stomach either. Almost like a stuck feeling and in my chest I guess. I keep having the urge to swallow hard but it never helps. and look up and stretch my neck to "push it down? It just feels like a rock in my chest.

Sounds like your esophagus is irritated. That happened to me kinda early out when I ate some homemade hummus. It was so garlicky, it burned going down! Swallowing was difficult for 3 or 4 days after. My only suggestions would be, to stick with bland foods for a few days, (Hahahaha, I know right???), and maybe take some Tums or Maalox. If it doesn't resolve, I would put a call in to the surgeon. Maybe you need a different PPI.

Over easy is great too! Just hard to eat the yolk without a soaking-up vehicle… I just had 3 eggs over easy with toast. That is exactly why I stuck with scrambled or over-hard eggs in the beginning too NYB. They are softer but I'm not that big of a runny yolk girl to begin with so I need something to sop it up (now rye toast or 1/2 English muffin is the ticket!). But if you like runny yolk style eggs...GO FOR IT! That is a perfect starter food as a fresh post-op. I would have eaten them all day if I could stand it.

Me three loving my poaches/over medium eggs. I was so glad they agreed with me because they were a favorite. The vehicle thing was tough for me too, until I got a little further out and I allowed a quarter/half of a low-carb tortilla as a 'vehicle', I could do this in the morning when my stomach was 'biggest'. Could eat less volume in one sitting as the day wore on, still like that too now. I ate them hardboiled, which I love; and one egg scrambled in some butter and a few pinches of shredded cheddar, moist gooey and yummy, and that I could eat without a vehicle. And then Iearned about cream cheese pancakes, made them savory instead of sweet - sauteed red/yellow peppers finely diced with some green onion, salt, pepper, parmesean cheese, and voila, awesome vehicle that also has protein! I did something similar with quinoa, made itty bitty quinoa 'cakes' fried 'em up in butter, and again, awesome vehicle that was protein too.

As the topic had moved to eggs, I must tell you about two of my latest favorites: French toast and omelets. Someone here mentioned they have very eggy french toast, and that inspired me. I whisk three eggs with a fork, adding a pinch of salt. Soak one slice of soft wholewheat bread, and pour all the egg into the pan with the slice of bread. I slowly fry it in lots of butter. Sometimes I upgrade it by making it "inside out toasted cheese french toast". When the bread is done, I sprinkle grated cheese into the pan like for cheese crisps. as soon as it is all bubbly, I put the toast on top. If I am being super decadent, I repeat the process on the other side. The omelet is the same three eggs, but without the bread. when I have turned it, I add cheese, tomato sauce, etc. It is excellent served with butter sauted mushrooms. Of course I have it with COFFEE Edit Writing this, got me so hungry that I simply had to go make it. Even though it is 4pm, but I have not had enough protein yet today. Second edit And for those who wonder how long it took to eat: 6 minutes I would normally take about ten, but I did push the limits a bit, and I was really empty hungry. I only had a sip of the coffee though, and will probably have the cup over the next half hour. Oh, and did I mention, there is also about half an egg in my coffee? Edit, edit edit That meal left me really full. It is what I usually have for breakfast, but I definitely sits a lot heavier later in the day. I eat my largest meals in the morning. I can easily finish off two eggs, bacon, a sausage and a slice of toast. For supper I will only have the protein, and sometimes that is too much, and I would just have some of the veggies, like mushrooms, small squash, or a bit of salad. Definitely no starchy carbs. Just under two hours later, I drank down a full cup of water with my powdered calcium, so I guess my stomach has already started emptying. I will only be eating again at about 7:30pm, and then It will be a leftover burger pattie or a protein bar, or maybe half a gem squash.

Leonie, yum! You need to post this on the recipe board too! Purty please!
Also wanted to mention that my go-to 'crunch'/vehicle item became Trader Joe's soy flaxseed tortilla chips. I only needed a few to feel satisfied, and I literally put any and everything on them - melted cheese (nacho style with salsa, sour cream later on when I could eat more) hummus, deli meat, peanubutter even. They are a complex carb, have protein and fiber. I also do fine with corn-based products, but the soy/flax elements also give these a nice boost. I switched to them as soon as my nausea subsided, but I still needed some kind of salty crunch.
