Terrific dinner (NYB, went to Esca -- really am loving this restaurant, best fish in NYC so far as I'm concerned) and was then motoring up 43rd Street to the theater ("Machinal" -- incredible production, really talented and miscast leading lady) when a woman stepped in front of me, and colided with my upper-belly-that's-ludicrously-pooched-out. She was mortified, and, looking at me, said "Oh my god, and you're pregnant, too!"
Swell.
Nope, not pregnant. I turned around and beamed at her -- it really was a VERY good dinner, and I was in an awfully good mood -- and said "Nope, HERNIA. No baby. But no worries, it didn't hurt!"
So yeah, it seems that what I have is some huge goddamn hernia. Roslin says he wants to fix it roughly in June. So I guess I'll be gestating for a while.

Machinal -- incredible production, really talented and miscast leading lady I'm going to see Machinal at the end of February - my sister's company is interpreting it and I always come up to see all the shows at Roundabout.

Oy vey Maggie. Can he do a tummy tuck at the same time? At least to the extent possible? And revise your scar?

I had a jumper back in the 90s that I loved but made me look about 7 months prego...even though there was no bun in said oven. I loved it but got tired of the embarrassment from people asking when the baby was due. I could have stopped wearing the jumper but it was so comfortable! I decided that whenever I wore it I would just have a "due date" in mind to tell people to save us both the embarrassment. I would just say something like, "In three months, thanks for your concern." and walk away.

Oy vay, NYB took the words outta my mouth! I too looked about 5 months preggers with my first hernias, and not must less than that with the more recent one. And now, just fat with the 3rd one. I SO hope this means you can get a full abdominoplasty approved when you have hernia surgery. Hansmom10-love your jumper story and strategy!

Had an open DS with Roslin in March, and now have two hernias, which I lovingly call my aliens. The top one, just below the breastbone, will roll and glide with each inhale and exhale. Now that I've lost a lot of weight, they protrude significantly, and I wear abdominal binders when I work out, or if I don't wear something warm which hides them. In this weather, I'm wearing a lot of sweaters and sweatshirts, as I am now cold all the time without the fat.
Since I'm a guy, I haven't had the preggo comments, but quite a few funky looks when swimming at the pool! I'm scheduling my hernia repair and plastics at Mt. Sinai with Dr. Herron for the end of April, when I will have lost almost all my weight. Getting the plastics done when the hernia is repaired is a good idea, as it will save the hospital stay and anesthesiology fees. Good luck, Maggie, and welcome to the club!

Machinal -- incredible production, really talented and miscast leading lady I'm going to see Machinal at the end of February - my sister's company is interpreting it and I always come up to see all the shows at Roundabout. When you say "interpreting" it…she does ASL interpretation? The reason I ask is that the problem I had with the actress who plays the lead is with her voice. Specifically, it's gorgeous. Clearly extremely well trained -- exquisite diction, beautiful modulation…it is the SOUND of the upper class. And the thing is, this is a woman who makes the choices she makes specifically because she has no choices. But nobody who comes from the kind of money and breeding that that voice implies…is out of choices. And NOBODY with a voice like that ever says "ain't" except in irony. So essentially, I felt that there was a significant class-issue here that was not just overlooked by this production -- and, specifically, by casting this actress (who is, in all other respects, REALLY good) -- but actively subverted. But tell me what you think once you've seen it. The set will blow your mind.

Re the plastics, here's my concern: I don't think I will be finished losing weight by June. And I sure as hell don't want to do a major set of plastics and then have to choose, six months later, between living the rest of my life with newly additional skin hanging down OR going back under the knife. But this hernia is becoming a problem. No pain, none at all, but it's starting to look bad, and makes clothes difficult.

Maybe talk to him about doing the abdominoplasty work while you're open, and the panniculectomy down the road.

Can you wait on the hernia surgery? I am purposely delaying mine until I am over a year out. I know I will need to wear binders all the time near my "due date", but this way, I've lost most of my weight. Now that I've lost a lot of weight, they protrude more, but otherwise don't hurt. Since you had your DS in September, can you wait until this September or October for the hernia repair?

Some hernias are dangerous to leave unrepaired. If the hernia (which is a hole in the abdominal wall) gets bigger, and/or if the intestine or stomach protrudes out of the hole....the risk is bowel necrosis, twisted bowel, etc etc. These are major emergencies if they happen. So it really depends on the size of the hernia, the exact location, etc etc
Maggie - are you wearing a binder? Is your wound completely closed?
mistercy - if I were you, I would not work out at all, except for walking, until the hernia is repaired. Nothing that strains the abdominal muscles at all.

Good point about knowing what the hernias are; I now have a third, and since I've had them before I'm fairly sure this one is the 'it can wait for now' but I do need to sched an appt to double check. I really need to be able to wait, just had hernia surgery in August for starters and this time, MUST get abdominoplasty approved or at least try. I'm also in maintenance so I need to give the tummy tuck a shot.

If this is your third one, seems to me that abdominoplasty is warranted medically. Your abdominal wall clearly needs work in order to prevent more hernias from happening. Certainly cheaper to do an abdominoplasty when you're getting a hernia repaired, than continuing to pay for multiple hernia repairs. Not that insurance companies think that way...

Met with Herron last week - he said I would need to do abdominoplasty, as I have a "swiss cheese" hernia. He said the workouts are still ok as long as I wear binders when working out, and avoid lifting anything over 75 pounds, and no heavy abdominal work, so I focus more on the arms during the workouts. No ab crunches here! May be good justification to get more of the plastics paid for in April, I hope! Meeting with the plastic surgeons next!
