I just wanted to update you all on what is going on. I had my phone consultation with Dr. Greenbaum and all went well. I have to get a psych evaluation, an upper GI, see a nutritionist, and something else (I forgot). I will let you all know how things go.

That is great! It feels nice to get the ball rolling, doesn't it? Right before the long holiday weekend too. So did his office provide you with referrals for the various professionals that you have to see? Forgive me, but I do not remember if you are in the same area as Dr. Greenbaum or working with him long-distance until it is time for surgery.
In any event, thanks for the update!

I am not in the NJ area so I am on my own and will be posting for assistance. The only thing he is sending is a prescription for the Upper GI. I am about 2 1/2 hours south of him so I may be able to see someone in that area, but we will see.

I'd recommend driving to the most qualified DS surgeon you can find. I traveled 3.5 hours to find mine. When I added up all the trips I did, it was over a dozen. It was worth every penny and minute spent. I have seen what my town does for bariatric surgery and it's not pretty. I haven't seen anyone yet who had any WLS done locally who has not regained most of their weight. My town doesn't offer the DS, only sleeve & RNY and some other half-assed "bypass" that defies logic. Oh, and they do the Crap Band. Lots of Crap Bands.
Drive to the best doctor you can find.

You are right; the more I inquire, the more I find out that the RNY was not the best option for a lot of us with BMIs over 50. I have searched all over for qualified surgeons and the one I want to go with is Greenbaum because the one in my area is not the right fit for me.

If you'd like to get together in person when you come to NJ, send me a PM! I live quite close to Dr. Greenbaum's office and hospital.

I am new to the website. I just had an appointment with Dr. Greenbaum today for hopefully a DS. I had RNY back in 2001. I met with the nutritionist and made my other appointments to be completed by February. I teach so I am hoping to have surgery this summer.

Welcome to the forum HistoryTracker! You might want to post on the introduction thread - or create a new post if you have questions so folks find your post/subject heading better. 😀 I wish you the best for your future surgery!

Thanks the problem that is bothering me right now is that I will be a revision from RNY. It is posted that Greenbaum likes to do distal RNY. I would like to find patients who are successful with this surgery to see if it is an option with me. But I am more interested in the DS.

I would like to find patients who are successful with this surgery to see if it is an option with me. But I am more interested in the DS. His criteria for the distal revision have to do with the manner in which your gastric bypass was performed. If you have the "okay" surgical technique, you'll have room to negotiate with him. If you have the "other" technique (and I can never keep straight which technique is which, but he will tell you), the DS will be off the table entirely with him. This is because he has had some bad experience with complications in revision patients with the "other" technique, including a death. Your next closest surgeon option for RNY-DS revision is Elariny in Fairfax.

You are right. It has to do with how my original surgery was done. I had an Upper GI and he watched and said my pouch is not that big. But an Upper GI does not show enough. So I have to get the Operating Notes (already requested) and the recent EGD I had over the summer.
My insurance will only cover Greenbaum and not allow me to go out of state. I would definitely be going to Roslin in NYC if I could as he supports the DS.
