I was cleaning out my medicine cabinet and ran across my old pill crusher from when I was a new post op. It's one of those heavy duty types that has grinding teeth. I was about to chuck it into the trash can and then I thought of a way to reuse it. It's now my new spice grinder. Works great and cleans up easily!

Re-use empty plastic containers from sour cream, cottage cheese and yogurt containers. The 8-ounce size is perfect portion for packing a lunch.

You are going to drop clothing sizes quickly. ;D
Check the consignment shops in the nicer parts of town to get best quality for cheaper price.
Goodwill stores have a lot of stuff come in when college students are packing to go home at the end of the semester.
Your feet will probably shrink. Don't invest a lot of money in shoes pre-op.

Sometimes immediately after surgery, our sense of smell is wicked strong. Save used zip-loc bags to put food scraps in before tossing them into the garbage.
My mom does this with things like onion peels, fruit peels, etc. because her sense of smell is a super-power.

What do you guys think of this: I have ordered a shoebox full of single serving protein meal replacements, lots of brands and flavors. After my surgery I will find the one I like the best and order a huge container of it. Would it be possible to then pass along all these extra single serving packets? I guess I could donate them to my local food bank, but how many of the food bank's customers would use them? Opinions, suggestions?

I hate having to throw away lettuce that I didn't get a chance to eat. I discovered this accidentally. My romaine lettuce was starting to wilt, so I decided to experiment and treat it like I would fresh cut flowers. See that little brown disc at the bottom of the stalk? I trimmed back just enough of it to expose the fresh part. Then I set the whole thing in a container with about half an inch of water. The next day the leaves had perked up and looked great. ;D I've had that same bunch of lettuce on the top shelf of my refrigerator for two weeks and it still looks fresh. I change out the water every couple of days to keep it from turning brown.

When I was first out from surgery and started on the soft foods, I couldn't eat very much. So, I would cook chicken until it was really tender and shred it up really fine and mix it into a can of the low fat cream of chicken soup. I would then spoon it into ice trays and pop them out as needed for me a meal and have chicken and refried beans topped with a little cheese. Pretty good.

I keep watching it to see if it's going to sprout roots. ;D I can't believe how long it's lasted.

I need to be able to cook ahead and have a stocked up freezer when I get home Post-Op. I think I'll start a new thread for more Ice Cube Tray Ideas.

One thing that has helped me is Craigslist and Freecycle. There is a free section on Craigslist and people are always giving away clothes. Same with Freecycle plus with Freecycle you have the added benefit of posting about things you need. You would be surprised at how much stuff people give away. On the other hand, when my clothes no longer fit me I put them back on Craigslist. You can also give away food on Craigslist. Many times I would overbuy and have new things that were about to expire. I would put them on Craigslist and they would go right away. I hate throwing out good things.
