Let me put this in perspective. Pre surgery I ate a lot of sugary foods. Not a lot of bread/rice/pasta but sweets.
I have never once had labs in my LIFE show increased risk for diabetes.
I've lost over 110 pounds (haven't gotten on the scale in 3 weeks, need to do that but still losing as my pants are all too big again).
All my other labs are PRISTEEN. Like incredibly awesome outside of my low platelets (long running issue).
Suddenly something called "Glycohemoglobin" is elevated and in the "higher risk for diabetes" category. WTH? I'm eating the occasional sweet (and I do mean occasional), NO bread at all, no carbs I mean I eat my protein and some veggies and fruit (even hardly any of that).
Sure I can go to zero sweets entirely but seriously this makes no sense. If I put this in perspective, if I ate say (this isn't the facts by the way it's a comparison) a cup of sweets per day prior - I'm now eating like a tablespoon once or twice a week AND the types are completely changed. I call berries a sweet. I call a sucker a sweet. I can't even tolerate anything like cookies, cake, ice cream, candy etc - they all make me sick.
Probably a bad idea that with the new regulations I can see my labs before my surgeon because this is worrying me.
Any ideas?

Were you fasting when you had your blood taken? Also did you have your A1C checked? If so what was that number?

Yes, I was fasting - it actually said "nothing by mouth" so I was afraid to ahve water...
A1C is 4.4
I'm trying to figure out if something I'm eating has more glucose than I thought.

I think I found the culprit. Bacon. We've been eating it every weekend, my kids love it so they always want Bacon Saturday morning. Since it's protein, I've indulged.
Damn I like Bacon too LOL. Seems that the fatty meats will cause your glucose to raise, particularly bacon and ham.
Boo.

Your A1C number looks great (I can't wait for the day I get there) and that is the better indication of your sugar levels over the past few months. I think that if you suspect it was the bacon, make sure you don't have it a few days before your next test but I don't think you have to give it up all together

I think I'll just cut down on my bacon consumption. Right next to my number it said I was reading high. Maybe I read it right? Nothing like a good old fashioned panic button for no reason LOL!! Health Information Technology, good and bad

I would probably retest. Could be a one-time aberration.

It might have been high "in the moment", but your A1C looks great.

Seems very strange because Glycohemoglobin IS the A1C! And 4.4 is an amazing number!!! Look up the ranges - I believe up to 6 is normal, 6-7 is pre diabetic and over 7 is diabetic.

Seems that the fatty meats will cause your glucose to raise, particularly bacon and ham. Boo. Relax. The bacon is doing zilch to you. Your A1c number shows that you are very firmly in the NORMAL territory. Your one *maybe* elevated serum glucose is almost undoubtedly a fluke. Eating carbs does not (well, not directly) increase your risk of diabetes. That is an old myth. Gaining weight DOES increase your risk. There is an enormity of stupid crap misinformation out there. With that A1c, you're fine. What was your glucose?

They didn't do a glucose? That means they didn't do a CMP (glucose is part of that)? That leads me to wonder if your labs are comprehensive enough... A quick Google tells me Glycohemoglobin is the SAME THING AS A1C. So, if this result is different from your A1C, I would question the results. Bacon will not cause high glucose. Unless it's coated in sugar or chocolate
