Another question. I have surgery scheduled for the 1/5 (I love writing that!) but also am scheduled to give a presentation at a conference cross country Jan 10th. My husband would travel with me. Should I not even think about it?

5 days after surgery, I was fine sitting.. not so fine standing and walking around for hours. I flew home 3 nights after surgery just fine, and it was a long day of travelling.. but I still would not push it.
Staying hydrated, resting and staying hydrated are full time jobs for most for nearly the first two weeks. I wouldn't want to add anything to that bill unless mandatory. You will be sore, you may or may not have trouble getting your fluids in, you may feel great or you may feel exhausted.. I'd take a pass. This is MAJOR surgery, despite the tiny holes on the outside, don't discount that fact, and give yourself the needed time to rest & recuperate.

Yes, I agree with Jo. While I was at work 5 days after my VSG, I was still VERY tired and still somewhat sore. It was trouble enough just getting in fluids on time, I couldn't imagine having to travel that soon out.

I would not want to travel cross country 5 days post op unless I absolutely had to travel. You are trying to stay hydrated at this point. I was tired and still requiring rest. I would try to reschedule if possible.

I would have been fine but others don't bounce back so quickly. it's really going to depend on the individual.
I was really worried about travel since I had surgery in Mexico. I was fine but another woman felt awful that day (we had surgery on a Tuesday and left Friday morning)

After my surgery I had to travel 3 hours back home in a car. I was so uncomfortable and when I finally got home, I could barely walk. Near my largest incision site I had what felt like the worst pulled abdominal muscle I've ever had in my life - it was excruciating. The whole way home I had to ride with something pressed up against my belly because it felt like my guts were going to spill out. Very, very painful. Lots of folks have no complications and are up and about a couple days post-op with no problem but then there are people like me who have to take it easy for a couple of weeks. You really have no way of knowing until it happens. Wish I could be of more help, but that's my story and I hope it helps you make your decision! Good luck with your surgery ~Micah

Thanks for all the advice! I did meet w/surgeon and recommended against it so its a no-go. I sort feel relieved. Its one less thing to worry about. I can just focus on healing and moving on

I was grocery shopping at 5 days and back to work at 6 days (would have been 5 days but I was having an insomnia problem).
Everyone is different so you won't know how you will do until you have surgery. Good luck!!
