Google "Young, Obese and in Surgery" published in the NY Times on the front page January 7. It's the story of an unfortunate young woman who picked lap band by a surgeon who did neither psychological testing or nutrition education. Truly malpractice. The writer clearly has a viewpoint that is anti-surgery and does little to show the positive side, or point to young people who have been successful. But what will really shock you are the comments to the story. Self-righteous, pious, fat-hating people by the hundreds! There are 369 comments that will reveal to you what people are really thinking; "I lost 30 pounds on this diet; parents of fat kids are guilty of child abuse; if she only tried vegan, low fat, low carb, or some other diet of the moment." The story and the comments are upsetting to read, but it shows you how much work remains in educating people about the disease of obesity, the importance of having a surgical option, and the malpractice that is out there when it comes to the band. One comment is from someone who had DS and developed an arthritis/skin complication. Several are from successful and unsuccessful RNYers. I thought about responding, but it seems hopeless when you read what people think about the morbidly obese.
Interested to hear what others think.

This was the saddest thing to me. My heart broke watching this girl trying and then having the band fail her so she ultimately gives up.
I didn't see the haters until after and that broke my heart too. So sad that people can be so mean...
