Hello everyone. I am at 21 months post op and thought Id check in and say hello. Life has changed and been very busy! I am now a flight attendant and am on a trip as I write. This is something that never could have happened prior to surgery. I get a lot of exercise as a result of my career.. I walk my legs off. The picture is my son and I in NY a few weeks ago. I had a bout in the hospital last August where I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Got that handled and seemingly have been fine sense. I do have a few questions for other DS's. 1) My bowels are most always to the loose side. The more fat the looser they seem to be. Is this typical in any of your experiences and or more so related to my colitis? 2) I eat a lot more carbs then most. IE I wrap my eggs in a tortilla, love pretzels and toast with eggs etc.... I eat pizza( granted a piece will do it), I eat chicken with brown rice, you name it. however, my weight plummets rapidly if I do not. I appear to be in the group where the procedure was more then %100 effective but remember a few of you saying I can expect a bounce back in my weight somewhere along the line. I am between 135-142 now and definitely do not want to be any thinner! If I drift up slightly, I just lean more to clean protein and it quickly corrects. Do the carbs increase bowel issues and also smell of bowel movements? 3)Has anyone found great ways to incorporate protein powder into savory dishes? I despise sweet protein drinks and thus, do not comply as much as I should. Id love to hear some ideas. My confession is that I am not fully compliant with vitamins... I don't get them all in, all the time....I don't miss days but doses. I am going to work on being 100% If I didn't have compliance issues I wouldn't have been 340lbs in the first place. I hope you are all doing well on your individual journeys!

Sounds like life is good to you. Congrats on the new profession.
Because you're eating more carbs and fat, they tend to be looser. My bowels are directly related to what I eat. IMHO nothing to worry about as long as it stays regular for you.
I eat alot of carbs. Like you said, if I don't, I lose weight. The hardest part of DS maintenance, in my opinion, is finding the balance of protein and carbs. You have to do what works for you. Yes, carbs increase the bowels. You can try Devrom for the odor. I take 2 pills before each meal (I take vitamins 3x a day so I just add the Devrom to them). For me, it helps with the odor. Doesn't necessarily work for everyone but you could try it.
Sorry can't help with protein powder. I get all my protein from food.
Work on the vitamins. I have two weeks worth of pill carriers and organize everything once every two weeks. I carry small containers I get from the Container Store that I can carry all the pills for that day with me. I also always keep a spare set of vitamins in my purse in case I miss a dose, I can at least grab some calciums and Vit D/K (those are my issue vitamins).
Eventually things will fall in line and it will become second nature. You're doing great!!

There's a protein powder that doesn't have a taste...damn it, now I can't remember the name. You can order it online plus they have one that is chicken flavored. I'll remember the name when I go to bed and I'll try to write when I do...or whenever I remember. I hate it when that happens. Brain dead.
Yes, carbs do increase bowel movements and odor. But as jpcello said Devron seems to work for a lot of us to correct the odor problem. I have collagenous colitis and so I too suffer from bouts of the runs. I'm on a medication now and it seems to work, almost 100% of the time. Thank goodness for it.
It sounds to me like you are doing well - but try to get in as much protein via your meals as you can. Try eating your protein first and not like we used to eat - a little of this and that and then a bite of the protein. Just give it a try and see how you do.

I think the protein powder you're looking for the name of bboop is Unjury. I could be wrong, I've heard others talk about it.
Muse2, you look absolutely wonderful, you are just shining! Congratulations on the new career, oh, the things we can do now that we are in shape and normal size!!! Way to go, what a neat career you've selected.
Thanks for stopping in and saying hello, you look happy and it's contagious!
Have a great Labor Day weekend, Kelly

Yes, Unjury is supposed to be flavorless. It is not completely flavorless, but the flavor is minimal. The thing with any protein powder is that it curdles if it is added to anything hot. It is a nasty mess. I would mix Unjury with cold milk until it dissolved and added that to my coffee. If you can find a way to do this with a savory recipe, it could work for you. Otherwise, you can mix it into yogurt, cottage cheese, or a smoothie. I would also add it to Val's Ricotta Fluff, which I practically lived off of when I was early out. weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/thread/676/ricotta-fluffCongratulations on your new career and that gorgeous son!

A, D, E and K need to be "dry". Any of these four as a gel cap are not useful to you at all.
Edited to add: Anything as a gel cap is not useful to you. Or to any DSer. They are in oil form and we malabsorb it.

It is not the outer shell that matters. It is what they contain. All of my dry vitamins are contained in gel caps.
But, Caprice was absolutely correct that anything in oil form will be malabsorbed.

Semantics freak (sometimes) here..... and it may be a regional thing, but I think of a gelatin capsule (two pieces) as different than a gel cap (molded, rubbery thing surrounding some kind of liquid). So, what I was referring to was the molded, rubbery thing. 'Cause, yah, I'm taking the same stuff as you, Goodkel

Hey I'm confused...all these years and I thought gel caps were a no no. I just realized I took an Advil for an allergy headache and it was a gel cap and it worked. So what's the deal?

HI, Betty, I think the important thing is what is contained by it. The A, D, E and K vites need to be in dry form, as you know, but when those vites are in the football-shaped, one-piece gel cap, typically, that means that they are oil-based. THAT'S where the problem is.
