Hi all,
I was hoping to post more over the last few weeks, but I've been so busy with work that I haven't been able to do as much as I wanted. I have however been reading the boards a lot and acted on a lot of the great advice and insights (i.e. Vitalady, pill box org., Pre-surgery changes). For instance, I'm proud to report that I bumped my Hb up to normal! and I'm drinking water with almost all my meals now! (a huge deal for me!). My pre-op scope showed my pouch looks good with no ulcers or esophagitis.
Anyways......the first step of my BoB to DS (via VSG) is going down this Monday!! We're heading to MTL tomorrow.
I spoke with Dr. Gagner about my concerns regarding the 2-step approach yielding a higher final weight plateau. He felt that the decreased risk given the amount of surgery is worth it and that an optimal result is still possible. We compromised with a 3-month goal for the second step (to DS), to minimize the interval and hopefully still get the bang-for-the-buck factor.
I was feeling a bit down about it before we spoke to be honest (as I am terrified about this not working). I'm hoping that by minimizing the time between the 2 procedures I will still be ok. My goal weight is 170 lbs. I am approaching this as an 18-month journey to get to the final plateau (I know its only an approx).
I think this is the last hope for me, so I better make this work.
Thanks again everyone for the helpful feedback and kind thoughts.
Will update on the other side.
Many thanks, R

It could take 2 years, could take 3. It doesn't matter. Do not give yourself any deadlines, just get through your surgeries, keep your carbs low and your protein high, take all your supplements, drink lots of water, and get some exercise. Then your body will take whatever time it needs. You do not need the added pressure of artificial timelines, even approximate ones.

I think that three months is perfect. Still early in the game, but gives you adequate time to fully heal from the first surgery.
As NYB said, forget about any timeline. As a virgin DSer, it took me a full two years to reach a normal BMI. And the weight loss didn't stop there. I eventually got down to a low normal until I bounced back up to mid-range.
Some people lose extraordinarily fast, but far from everyone does. Rapid loss is no marker for how much weight you will lose in the long run.
Best wishes for a safe and successful surgery and a rapid recovery!
Ps. Could you please ask your wife to update us when you are out from surgery? We worry.

Hi Everyone!
I just wanted to take a moment to provide a quick update on behalf of my husband...
His surgery on Monday went well. He's up and moving and has been able to get some fluids down. He's still sleeping quite a bit
The pain is very, very intense when it comes, so right now we're focusing on keeping that under control. He did need some IV fluids last night because he was low on his water intake. Today I will push him harder to drink and walk more.
Dr. G checked on us this morning and seemed pleased with the progress. Apparently this was one of the most complicated surgeries he has done...he did a lot of work.
Thank you all for your kind words and support through the first phase of this journey!
J

Glad everything went smoothly!!
I am also a BOB to DS. You are the ONLY other one I know of in the WLS community thus far. I'm Lisa - nice to meet you! I am 2 years out from my revision with Dr. Keshishian. Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you love your DS as much as I adore mine.
Happy healing.

Thank you all for your kind words and support through the first phase of this journey! J Thank you so much for the update. It sounds like that band did a lot of damage. Good riddance to it. While he does need to take constant miniscule sips, requiring IV fluids is not unusual so early out. I am sure that his stomach is very swollen, more than a virgin VSG, from the repairs that had to be made. There is not much room in there right now. Walking is painful. It is best to time it when his pain meds have just kicked in so that he is fully medicated at the time. He'll be more inclined to walk more if he is not in agony while doing it. He's going to be doing a lot of sleeping. It will help him heal. As bboop mentioned, be sure to get some rest while you can. He won't be any help to you when he gets home. As I've mentioned to you before, you are a wonderfully supportive wife. You are a real gift to him.
