Hello,
Just wanting a little bit of feedback regarding Magnesium. I was studying the Vitalady list to make sure I was getting everything in I should and noticed Magnesium Citrate. I hadn't been doing that and thought that could be the root of my constipation problems taking all this Iron, Calcium, and Potassium. So, I did a little more research on this site and looked at old posts regarding Magnesium. After reviewing all the posts, including Kelly who said she probably couldn't go without her Magnesium, I decided to go with Magnesium Oxide since that is what almost everyone on here unanimously said to use, rather than citrate which can cause laxative/diarrhea effects.
I'm taking the Magnesium Oxide 500 mg twice a day. I take one a day in the morning with the ton of iron I take (this may change tomorrow when I see the hematologist) and I take one a day with my last dose of vitamins. I'm noticing I get a little cramping within an hour of taking it. It's not overpowering or as bad as when I'm constipated but it last for an hour or two and it's uncomfortable. Maybe I just need to get used to it. Yes, it seems to be working as I go about two hours after the morning dose.
If you take Magnesium Oxide, what is your dosing schedule and which mg size do you take? Maybe I'm taking too much, maybe I'm taking them at the wrong times. Perhaps some are taking the citrate, in which case, how are you doing with it? I would love to hear your feedback! Trying to tweak things and get it right so I appreciate anything you share.
Thanks, Kelly

Sorry but I take Mag Citrate. I have been taking one Vitalady per day since the beginning. I have never had any problems with constipation but I don't take massive amounts of iron. Evidently the amount of calcium doesn't seem to affect me (or the Mag Citrate is doing it's job).

I take magnesium oxide, 400mg, with each of my 3 calcium doses. I consider this just a counter balance to the calcium. I also take 100mg magnesium glycinate to keep the levels up in my body since I understand that is absorbed better than the oxide. Neither has given me any stomach upset but except for the morning dose I usually have something in my stomach so that may be helping me.

Thanks jpcello and PeteA. Knowing you take citrate with no problem is good to know, JP. Pete, you were one iof the people who came up in my reseach so I appreciate your feedback! You actually take 200 mg more a day than I've been trying. Maybe I will eat when I take it and see if that makes a difference.

Like Pete I take magnesium oxide, 400mg, with each of my 4 calcium doses, without it I would not go to the bathroom at all. I also take 4 magnesium glycinate and 2 magtein 150mg( magnesium L-Threonat) for my migraines. I take them after I eat so I haven't had any problems.

I take Mg glycinate. Mg oxide does not absorb well. Mg glycinate is highly soluble and absorbs well. Better absorption means less remains in the bowel to cause diarrhea. glycinate variety as the "Cadillac" of mg supplements. This form of mg is less disruptive on the bowels than mg chloride, citrate and sulfate, which can cause diarrhea. Aside from these considerations, mg glycinate is five times easier for the body to absorb than mg oxide.
Individuals suffering from malabsorption conditions will benefit from mg glycinate. Older people, who are usually prone to mg deficiency, also benefit Mg glycinate taken with food. suppresses PTH level, needed for ca absorption and when balanced correctly with ca, usually a 2:1 ration Ca:Mg provides a balance for our bowel movements to prevent constipation and diarrhea issues. mg levels are low, they can cause a low ca level that is resistant to vit D and PTH regulation. It may be necessary to supplement both mg and ca to regain normal function

I take Vitalady's magnesium at the end of the day before I go to bed. This was part of her DS package. I have no issues with constipation.

Louteg, Simba, and Cindy,
Thanks for the feedback. Since I wrote this thread, I have been taking Magnesium Oxide twice a day and Magnesium Citrate twice a day along with two Colace at night. I tried calling Vitalady at least four or five times and left messages each time as they said they were busy on their voice mail. They did call back twice but I eventually gave up and went to The Vitamin Shoppe and just bought the Magnesium Citrate they had for sale. I'll have to compare whether it's what Vitalady has in hers, I believe it is. This is one my issue. It's been a little better lately but, oh my, do I struggle with this! NYB suggested prunes, unfortunately, they made me nauseous as that would have been the ideal solution. I wish there was a magic something that could rid me of this problem but, if it's the worst I deal with regarding my DS, I'm perfectly fine!
Have a good day, Kelly

Add flax meal to some of your meals. I mix them in with cream cheese pancakes and waffles that I make. At least it mostly dietary fiber. The nutritionist said I need to increase my dietary fiber intake to 15 grams a day. Hope that it helps.

Sugar alcohols ending in "-itol"? Sorbitol, etc.? The stuff that makes many things like sugar free gum and candy sugar free. In my early days when I first experienced constipation, a small bag of sugar free Peppermint Patties or mini Reeses' Cups were sure to clear the deck most urgently and dramatically. I have been taking Mag Oxide 500mg twice a day with great success, one with my noon iron and one in the evening. But, I've been having iron issues lately and my hema wants me to stop taking anything besides C with my iron. I just started taking 1000mg once in the evening. No problems, yet, but it has only been a week. Just had my first ever infusion today. My whole iron routine is changing. This may cause changes in the magnesium I need to take as well. Like many things about the DS, sometimes you have to experiment a bit before you dial in a solution that works consistently for you. I am 7+ years out and am still learning.

What can you tell me about Magnesium Chloride?
I used to use whatever was combined with my Calcium, but now I have Citrical Petites. The chelated Magnesium was three times the price, so I took the cheaper tub, but it is still sealed.

So far I haven't seen any difference with -itols, then again, maybe I haven't had enough of them. As a rule, I haven't been having any candy or sweeteners, though, I do use Splenda in my hot tea and have been eating a very small piece of chocolate each day as we each have an Advent calendar (I think that small piece of chocolate might actually be helping.) I'm going to try prune juice with water mixed in, as a matter of fact, I used to do that for my son when he was a baby because he had trouble. If that doesn't work, I'm just going to accept the blessing of the DS and do my best with this each day. My surgeon said to definitely up my fat and use Miralax if I need it, he said I won't become dependent upon it. So, that's the plan for now in this order: Prune juice cut with water, upping the fat, and then Miralax maybe ever other day, if necessary. Perhaps I should try the -itols. Come to think of it, I tried the sugar free Werther's candy and they didn't have any effect on me, I read someone else had success with them.
THANKS SO MUCH for everybody's input!
Kelly

I cannot get Calcium Citrate tablets at all in South Africa, and a friend could bring some for me with my Vit D. I was a bit overwhelmed with my first Amazon order, and was familiar with the name. Now I still have a three month supply. What should I order next time? Do you think I should use these Magnesiums?

Get Citracal Max. More calcium per dose than the petites.

Kelly - do you take any kind of fiber on a regular basis? I add a scoop of Garden of Life Super Seed Beyond Fiber to my morning cold beverage. I take tons of calcium but minimal iron and no additional potassium. It works for me (I also take one Mag Citrate every day). I have never had an issue with constipation except once when it was caused by pain meds.
Just another thought.

Jpcello, adding fiber is probably a good idea. I'm wondering if those fiber capsules work. I might just find out on my own. Cindy suggested flax meal, just not sure what to add it to, she's much more creative than me with food.
DSwitcher, I take 500 magnesium citrate and two magnesium oxide, I guess it makes things a little easier. Still not easy, though. I just added more fat and will try drinking cut prune juice and possibly the fiber.
Thanks, Kelly

magnesium oxide for constipation
magnesium citrate for bone building
I have no problem with the first so I do not take mag oxide.
I do have problems with my bones as evidenced by my DEXA, so I have added magnesium citrate a couple of years back
