another thing I am kind of worried about is the colonoscopy. I have to drink this laxative solution 3 quart of it plus take another type of laxative for 2 days before and then the 4th quart the day of the procedure. So basically I will be shitting my brains out for 2 days. Then the list of risks include infection of a damaged heart valve which I have other intestinal infection and arrythmia on my damaged heart. I am kind of worried about that.

True. Maybe I should just cancel that appt. Well will see what tomorrow brings. I am eating 1 1/2 cups of brown rice and quinoa going to have an apple after that. You gotta get in 200g of protein and 100g of carbs every day, plus 64 oz of water. And that needs to be spread out over the course of a day. Plus take your vitamins. Everything else is not nearly as important, except enough fat to keep your system running well.

Pat - hope you don't mind another voice in this conversation First, you're doing great, but like NYB said, this isn't going to change overnight. You've been doing this for 3 weeks. You've been eating like crap for 10 years. Please give yourself a break and give it some time. You are having to learn everything like a newbie and that takes time. You want to gain weight, that takes time. As far as the other subject, colonoscopy, is there a particular reason you're having one or are you just having this because it's time (age, etc.)? I'm a firm believer in colonoscopies as I have had two dear friends over the past few years deal with colon cancer. Are the risks from the procedure itself or the anesthesia they give you? If you are concerned about some of the risks, then you must speak to the appropriate doctors. Have you talked to your cardiologist about this? Gastro who prescribed it? You have to weight the risks of the procedure itself with the risks of not having a colonoscopy if they suspect something is wrong.

I appreciate any input. The reason for the colonoscopy is its time been 10 years. I am concerned about the anesthesia and the procedure. The reason is my heart. I had open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve using a pig valve, when the surgeon got in there he said I had the most calcified heart structure he had ever seen and he has been a heart surgeon for 25 years. He couldn't remove all the calcified tissue or as he put it he wouldn't have had anything to sew the new valve to. So when he sewed the sewing ring to my heart it left me with what is called a para-valvular leak that is pretty substantial. If any of the bacteria from the procedure get into my blood stream it can cause an infection of my valve. Right now with the leak my BP runs at 120/41 with BP meds to keep the top number down to 120 from about 135 to ease the work on my aortic valve. If you get an infection of the valve it can be very dangerous. Plus the anesthesia causes your BP to drop so that also concerns me. Can cause arrhythmia. My cardiologist said it would be OK to have it but it still worries me.

Pat, you have to speak to your cardiologist about this. There may be alternate ways of anesthetizing you that are safe for you. But you must speak to your cardiologist before undergoing any procedure.

I'll tell you what I was thinking is having it done in the private sector so I could have it done at the hospital that I had my heart surgery that has a large cardiac unit so if anything does go wrong I would have heart doctors close by to take care of it. Iam sure that Medicare and my supplement would cover it. I haven't been put under since my heart surgery and even though this is not like a general anesthesia it does put you under to a point. The VA does not have those kind of facilities so if anything happened they would have to put me in an ambulance and take me to Sacred Heart.

Pat why don't you wait 3 months. See if you can get your weight to be increasing slowly, your iron and vitamin levels stable, to feel better, get your eating habits established, etc. Then in 3 months do the colonoscopy. You waited 10 years, another 3 months isn't critical.

Pat - not sure if your insurance will cover it but there is a procedure called a virtual colonoscopy. Not all insurance will cover it because if they find something, they still have to do a standard colonoscopy. I had a virtual one because I have a twisted colon and they can't necessarily do a complete colonoscopy the typical way. It's done using a scan, which is why it is virtual.
That said, since you said it's been 10 years since your last colonoscopy, I strongly urge you to either get cleared from your cardiologist to have the colonoscopy or have the virtual colonoscopy. At least look into the virtual colonoscopy to see if its covered. Less invasive than a standard colonoscopy.
