How long after the DS do you think I could start lifting weights?

I'd say that at 3 months, you could start with VERY light weights and lots of reps, and SLOOOWWWWLLLYYY build from there.
The DS is not a race, it's a life long process. There is no rush to start lifting weights - your hernia risk is serious for a long time after surgery.

I had my surgery in February and was cleared by my surgeon in May. I had never been in a gym in my life, so I hired a trainer and worked very slowly. Make sure you have clearance from your surgeon.

Also, "cleared for exercise" doesn't mean you start working out the next day. It means you start verrrrryyyyy slowly, maybe at first you just walk 3 times a week, then maybe you swim or use an elliptical trainer, then maybe you add some very light weights….it should take a looooong time to get up to serious exercise.

Definitely talk to your surgeon. I was cleared for light work outs with increasing weights and intensity at 6 wks. YMMV... I waited til 2 months.

I love weight lifting. As a matter of fact, I haven't done it since March 2014 and am probably not allowed to resume till March 2015 (wrist surgery). I miss it! Once you get started, I think you'll really like it.

Bummer on the wrist surgery I just had a rotor cuff repair. I can't lift until January anyways but I was just wondering how soon. I know I'm going to lose a lot of weight but I want to make sure I don't lose muscle as well

We never really discussed it, as I didn't pick it up again till many years post DS. I'd definitely ask your surgeon.

I was cleared at 6 weeks to work out - started off slowly especially with stomach - just hit 4 months yesterday and lift 3 days/wk & walk or Eliptical 3x/wk basically since 10 wks with no limitations. If you can work with a trainer even better - mine does group training for $25/ session. Look at yoga or Pilates Good Luck

That's awesome that you work out 3 days a week. I'm fortunate enough to have one of good friends that is a PT and specializes in strength training. I can't lift anything over 10# until January 28th because of a rotor cuff repair so that would put me some where around week 9. I will just focus on walking until then along with protein, vitamins, water and everything else I will need to learn along the way.

I love strength training. Building up more muscle helps burn the calories. It is nice to see the contour of your body changing and I enjoy lifting weights and working on the machines. I hate the Elliptical and prefer using a treadmill. I have been lifting after 3 months out.
