I have some questions in regards to alcohol consumption after surgery.
Obviously because of the high sugar content of most of it, it needs to be avoided while in the loosing phase. However, I am wondering when/if it's okay to slowly re-introduce on an occasional setting. And if it is, what to have. If it's not recommended, then no problem, just not sure what everyone's thoughts are.

The issue with alcohol isn't just the sugar. Alcohol is taxing on the liver. Rapid weightloss is extremely taxing on the liver. So alcohol is supposed to be avoided during this losing phase because why put extra stress on the liver when it's already being taxed. Generally, most surgeons will have you avoid alcohol for at least a year, some might say more. Ask your surgeon his/her thoughts on this. I'm sure you'll probably get varying responses to this, but generally it's advised to avoid if possible, especially while losing weight early post-op. I'm 12 years out now and maybe occasionally (meaning twice a year) I'll have a cranberry juice with vodka (small) or maybe 1/2 glass of wine. I do find that alcohol affects me quicker than it did, and I tend to get sleepy.

Everything Melinda said. And.... Alcoholism developing AFTER weight loss surgery is something that happens. Less for DSers than RNYers, but it can happen to any of us. So, when you do allow yourself alcohol again, be careful. But, yah, your liver needs all the help it can get right now.

I waited more than a year to drink alcohol (doctor's orders). Plus I wanted to make sure I had lost all my weight. I was never a big drinker but I do like wine. I have no issues with wine (actually have an open bottle in my kitchen right now). Sometimes I simply like to have a glass of wine before dinner.
Alcohol tends to get me drunk really quick and I'm also careful with whatever I use as a mixer. I try to stay away from fruit juices simply because of the high sugar content (carbs). I'll occasionally have a beer or champagne but the bubbles definitely bother me (especially good champagne with lots of bubbles).
I will say that I can get pretty drunk really quick. One drink and I'm definitely feeling it. Almost never had two drinks unless I know I don't have to drive.
I went on a cruise this past summer. Enjoyed bloody marys by the pool and we always had a glass of wine with dinner. I discovered my absolute favorite cocktail - pomegranate cosmo - yummy.

If it's not recommended, then no problem, just not sure what everyone's thoughts are. Definitely talk to your doctor. You just had your surgery in March. You've got at least a good 6 months to wait. Like Melinda said, it's very taxing on the liver.

I wouldn't drink this early out...no way. Just don't. As said by other posters, it taxes you liver and besides that you can get drunk in a big hurry.
Just don't. Wait until you have reached your goal weight.

I was never told to avoid alcohol in moderation. I think I had a couple of sips of wine at about 6 months out, and then increased slowwwwwly from there. Mind you I don't drink much - a couple of glasses of wine or a beer here and there, a cocktail once in a while. The trick is moderation…once you start drinking, go verrrrrrrrry slowly until you see how you react.

I didn't drink anything until 6 months out and haven't drank all that often since, but when do I don't find that I get drunk any quicker.
Beer has too much carbonation for my stomach and that sucks because I love really good wheat beer. My drink of choice now is Diet Ginger Ale and Whiskey (Pretty strong on the whiskey) and it can be really cheap whiskey because I am mixing it. It is strange but the two components really mellow the task of one another, oh and I use a lot of ice to kill the fizz.
Additionally I do enjoy a glass of wine, but it seems to cause heart burn for some reason.
IMO...alcohol like anything else in moderation is okay, but again I wouldn't really drink any until 6-12 months out when you are healthier.

Please don't take this as advice but I will share my experience.
I had DS surgery 2/2012. My sister and I took a Vegas trip 6/2012. I endulged in one of the giant Frozen Piña Colada drinks that are sold everywhere in Vegas. Within an hour I was stuck in the bathroom with everything coming through my body like water. Obviously this was a bad idea.
Flash forward to now.
I have lost 100% of my excess body weight and have been maintaining since 10/2013.
I can have a few cocktails with no obvious effects of having had DS surgery .... HOWEVER... I am now a light weight. I cannot imagine drinking more than a few cocktails the same way I can't imagine eating a giant bowl of pasta or potato salad. Not because my tummy or guts can't handle it but more because my new averagely sized self just does not need that quantity anymore.

I have drank twice since my surgery and have found myself to be an incredible lightweight compared to how much i use to be able to drink. I found that i get buzzed faster, like one drink but it also seems to go away faster but as i said i have only drank twice so i am definetly not an expert. All i will say is with our new body chemistry i will not drive after ANY amount of alcohol.

The only thing I won't drink are fruity cocktails, and mixed drinks. The sugar kills me. BUT, other spirits, especailly whiskey, work extremely well. Wine works too well if I'm looking for a good time. LOL. I just keep drinking it, then, damn, the bottles empty... . I can do beer just fine. no problems with the carbonation. I do get a buzz faster, but I've learned how to maintain a level of intoxcication, and not end up puking in the yard after 2 hours. Once a month I get together with a bunch of freinds, a couple 30 packs, and a campfire, and we talk and drink the night away. Then I walk the 4 blocks home. Occasionally, my mornings are not plesant, but on average, I have mornings like anyone else after indulging. What is does do though is make me retain lots of fluid for days.. I'm usually up a few pounds for a bit until the water weight subsides, and in the losing phase, I wouldn't lose for 3-5 days after. I didn't drink until I was over 6 months out. For the record, my preferred drink for social outings is Whiskey and Diet Coke. Also, I've found that my mornings are better sticking with whiskey, than beer, or Wine. Watch your liver numbers on your labs. They will tell you how taxed your liver is. Drink LOTS of water while drinking alcohol. It helps in many ways.
