My five year labs came back and all is well except for the fact that my vitamin B6 and vit B1 levels are toxic. My phosphorus is high as well. I stopped taking B complex vitamins 6 months out when my levels were high. I met with my surgeon last week and was informed that we DSers naturally absorb B vitamins and do not need supplements. Dr. Rabkin told me to check my multivitamins and calcium to see if I was getting extra B in them. My Costco multivits give me 500% of Bvits per pill. I take three a day making 1500% dose. The surprise came when reading my Costco calcium info showing that each dose gives me an additional 500% adding up to 2000% from that source a day. That's a total of 3500% a day for me!! I need to find vitamins and calcium citrate that do no include B Vitamins. I have stopped my calcium and vitamins because of the seriousness of vitamin B toxicity. Please let me know if you have a supplement brand doesn't have B and phosphorus.

Gail I've always had issues with high B levels - mostly B12 and B6. I take Vitalady Tender Calcium Citrate and there is absolutely no B vitamins in them - nothing in them but calcium citrate. Years ago I tried Costco Calcium and i didn't have any success. As soon as I switched to Vitalady my levels came back to normal.

Gail, sorry I have no input on your question, but wanted to throw this out:
Opposite end of the spectrum, here......
My last Dr. visit, after seeing my labs, she suggested a weekly injection of B complex AND B12. And, I am supplementing with sublingual b12 (now...)
Not being contrary, but I remember hearing over the years that "B" issues were more a RNY problem. So, once again, I'm the weirdo.......
Hope you are able to get your levels to where you want them, though.

I find it interesting how each of our supplement needs can be so different. For instance, I came up with very high A and dropped that supplement while my friend has to take megadoses. I am also finding the the farther out I am, the less I need. It is as if my body had been able adapt itself to absorb more somehow. (This applies to food as well unfortunately)

This is very interesting, thanks for sharing. Though I'm early out, my B-12 is very high above range. I'm wondering if I'm like you in that I absorb it. I cut down to once a week for vitamin B-12, perhaps I should cut it out entirely?!?! Thanks so much for sharing this as I had no idea...
Hope the toxicity comes down and all ends up fine with you, Gail.
Have a good day, Kelly

I've always had to take b-vitamins. I just take them three times a week to keep my levels in range. If I don't, they drop. I've never heard of DS'ers not needing B vitamins.

I hope I didn't give incorrect information. I do know that I absorb it and that it is "hidden" in many other supplements. Hope it helps others to just keep an eye on their levels.

I never took anything but B12 and it was sky high my first labs so I haven't taken any since. My B levels are upper end to high. I was taking Costco Calcium but went to either Target or walmart stuff last trip (convenience) so I will make sure to check what I have now, and if I do consider Costco again I will read label closely.
Thanks

A lot of people DON'T know that B6 is in their Costco Calcium. It's also in a lot of the energy drinks, so if those are part of your daily intake then your B levels will be higher.

Just had my 3 month labs and my B12 is also very high. I stopped them for now and will reassess at my 6 month labs.

interesting that the Kirkland Costco calcium citrate in Canada does not contain any B vitamins - just calcium and some D
I stopped taking my B complex long ago as I did not need it. The B in my twice a day multi was quite enough
Note about the Bs - B1 and B6 can be toxic. But B-12 can be high without ill effects - it can actually be a good thing. I wouldn't worry about high B-12, but there is no need to supplement to keep those high numbers

I keep my B12 high, but I take no other B's except whats in my multi, b1 and B6 levels are in the normal range. Happy Ds'r is right. B12 can be high, very high, with no effects. B1 and B6 (especailly B6) can become toxic. Our bodies do not get rid of those quickly. Excessive B12 just gets pee'd out.
The B vite requirement was more of a Pre-op requirement, keeping your B1 high before surgery helps with Nausea after. (at least it's supposed to). Surgery (or specifically "injury") can have a profound effect on B vit levels (b1 specifically). I'm not sure why that is true, but i have read it many time, many places. Once your healed, b1 returns to normal. As DSr's we shouldn't have a problem with absorbing water based vitamins, but some people do.

I'm a sleever and have issues with my B vites. I struggle to keep my B12 and B1 high enough without my B6 becoming toxic. I, too, was taking a B complex in addition to B12 sublinguals, but dropped the complex and have added a separate B1.
Just a heads up for any sleever as this just isn't a DS problem.
