I was wondering if this happens to anyone else. I tried to eat some beef for the first time since surgery Thursday night (I'm 7 wks out) it was very tender, pot roast. I had a very small portion, took my time and chewed very well. I felt fine for an hour then all of a sudden I started getting pain in my chest and I new I was gonna throw up.
I threw up 6 times over a period of 5 hours. It was forceful too so much so that today all day I am in pain from the top of my incision to about 4" down. This happen to me 1 other time at about 4 weeks out when I ate a small piece of cold cut roast beef.
I've barely eaten today, just kept to my protein shake cause I feel so sore but I did have a little chicken for dinner, which has never given me a problem, and that was 7 hours ago and I still feel it in my stomach and throat and have been fighting not to throw up again for hours.
I would think after 7 hours it would be out of my stomach but I just feel it sitting in my chest and every time I try to drink then I have to fight not to throw up. Is it normal for food to sit so long in the stomach? Should I just give in already and throw up? But it honestly is so painful when I throw up I try to avoid it at all costs. Does anyone else have the problem that an hour after you eat all of a sudden it makes you sick? I'm just so sore and stressed I don't even want to try eating again any time soon.

It's day-time here, but I have no advice for you. I have hardly ever thrown up in my life, and not once since my DS.
That beef was obviously too tough on your tender stomach, and I can imagine that it is extra irritated and inflamed right now. I would suggest that you stick to shakes, yoghurt and smooth food for a day or two before trying meat again. Perhaps some rich egg drop soup?
Take care and send your surgeon a copy of this post.

Yes, avoid beef. My husband had the same issue with asada of all things. I think there are some things our bodies aren't ready to handle. Next time, just try a small bite, and see how it goes. Our bodies are like a newborns, we need to be gentle with it, and everyone's reacts differently.

Lisa, you might try a probiotic. Also, are you taking a PPI?

Lisa: I just started beef because it was difficult to digest. I take a probiotic everyday. I have had very little throwing up except for earlier this week when I was sick with a fever (probably viral) and nothing I ate stayed down. I would avoid beef for at least another month. Things do change and I hope this will resolve for you.

I do take a PPI twice a day and also the probiotics. I think I'll stay away from beef a while longer as suggested.
I am still sore in my stomach area and am just eating my shake and yogurt. I really made myself sore and am just trying to take it slow.

You have to take it one day at a time with this surgery. I had such issues with heartburn that it is almost non existent now. Things do change and recovery sucks. There is no other way around it. Try beef in a couple of months and see where you are with it. Just keep maybe more soft food. Refried beans with melted cheese was one of my favorite and I got so tired of yogurt. Today I knew I wasn't getting enough protein so I put three scoops of weigh protein and decided make a thicker shake. Now I know I got more than 100 in today. I wish you well. Are you going the Christmas party on December 6?

It took me a while to get to beef. Chili went down pretty well early out and dark meat chicken. I think the density of the beef may have something to do with it>
Sorry to hear that it lasted so long. Usually when something didn't agree with me early on I would have a stomach ache for a couple of hours and sometimes throw up once or twice at the most.
If you really have a beef craving you may want to puree it or you might do a very little with a lot of juice and/or gravy.

Thanks petea
I think I'm gonna try very hard to just stay away from beef for a good month.
When I get sick, I get sick! lol my God it's horrible. It's happen to me a few times now with different foods and it's just pure hell.
It doesn't happen till an hour or more after I eat. Then it goes on for 4-6 hours. I told my husband I swear I can feel the food coming back from my intestines, into my stomach and out. It freaks me out cause it's so forceful. I've broken blood vessels around my eyes from it and I'm SO incredibly sore afterwards.
I actually thought of having a lot of juice/gravy so I tried a little pot roast it was very tender.
I don't know I just have to rethink things to eat for a while.
Thank you for your input

Thanks for all your help and support. How have you been doing? My weight loss is very slow. I think cause I keep having trouble with throwing up and then I don't want to eat. No I'm not going to be able to go to the party. Maybe the next party they have. I just can't work it out with babysitting.

The one thing I noticed with this surgery is you have to eat. I think your body thinks it is going into starvation mode. I made an agreement with myself that I will not bitch if I see even a 2 oz lost. 2 oz is just 2 oz. I have lost 58% of my excess weight since December and that isn't bad. I am far better off where I am now than where I started. I have to stay focused on my health, eating right and moving. This is part of the journey is not over yet.
