Hi everyone! I am new to this site (I've been reading lots on here but this is my first post) and I have recently been approved by insurance for DS surgery! However, my EKG was abnormal so my doc is requiring cardio clearance before he will schedule my surgery. Just wondering if anyone else had an abnormal EKG and if it delayed getting surgery at all? Thanks!

Most surgeons require a cardiac clearance. First find out what the abnormality is before you have to worry about delayed surgery.

Yes, definitely find out about your heart first.
But, a heart issue does not necessarily mean that you won't be a candidate for surgery.
We have members here with heart issues who have successfully had the surgery.
Both you and your surgeon need to know what is going on before you can go any further.
Better safe than sorry.

Also, there are a million reasons for an abnormal EKG reading and most of them are harmless. In an earlier attempt at WLS I had to get cardio clearance. It turned out to be no problem although it freaked me out at the time. Just consider it one more step to your goal.

lelu2312,
Just a note to let you know that I, also, had an EKG come up abnormal when I was getting clearance for surgery. My family doctor quickly did another, confirmed it was normal for me, and everything proceeded as scheduled. (I have no cardiac issues.) I'm hoping you fall into the same circumstances because this is the lowest I have ever weighed since my first child and I'm only 2 months and 2 weeks out!
Good luck, Kelly

You do have to let them work that up for you, so you can find out the cause. But dont assume it can preclude you from surgery. My brother had pretty severe heart disease going in to his DS. Our surgeon sent him for a cardiac workup, which of course was pretty abnormal. It made them take some more precautions with him during surgery and recovery (for example they sent him to a more monitored level of care after surgery). But guess what? Having the DS and losing weight improved his cardiac function tremendously. It all depends on the underlying issue, and of course you need to know what that is.
