I went to the hair salon today and the smock still didn't fit and I still look huge...but I've lost 38 pounds as of today SO WHO CARES? The jeans I have on were pulled from the "oh shit, these are too small" pile two weeks ago and now they are going to go in the "oh shit, these are TOO BIG" pile right now!!!!! WHOO- HOOO!!! But I am still fat...anyone else shocked by their reflection? I feel so GOOD but I still look so...well, fat!

Our day is coming dear BTW... What does a normal days food look like for you? I have to get a routine down with my meals. I've only lost 17. I think I need to be eating what your eating!

Amy, don't compare yourself to anyone - everybody loses at different rates, everybody loses in different places, everybody has different body types. Just keep doing the DS thing and you'll be fine.

Isn't cool to be losing yourself out of clothes instead of gaining yourself out of clothes? Believe me though, it gets annoying/expensive after awhile constantly turning over the ward robe.
Regarding still looking fat to yourself, remember you are only 1 month post op. As long as you are eating and drinking well, the weight will keep coming off and your body will get smaller right along with it.
Just yesterday at work I was talking with one of my peers and I told him, "man I am going to have to start buying new ties as this one is too long". He said, is that because you don't have any girth around your neck anymore? He proceeded to say that he had never been in that club before (he has a thick neck) and I told him it was definitely new territory for me. My shirt which is an 18/35 is just huge on me now especially the collar, and I could stick my whole hand down the top of my shirt even with the tie fully tied around my neck. I have always had to use collar extenders because buttoning the top button was so hard.....hell now I can't get it tight enough, which is really strange.
So anyway, you will look less and less fat to yourself everyday....and others will notice it a lot quicker and a lot more than you will.

Hey Scott, you can send those 18 shirts to my husband…who unfortunately is gaining his way out of all of his 17 shirts.

Teachermom, don't fret..... One day, very soon, you'll look in the mirror and realize you're "skinny". For me, it just happened one day. I still kinda smh now and then when I see myself. This WILL happen!

Yes, I can relate. I look better, but still fat. The clothes getting too big to even wear is hard because I really don't want to go buy more fat clothes. Don't get me wrong... I'm glad for the loss.... But am waiting to be able to shop in "regular sizes"....we should be so proud of our accomplishments.... And watch the weight and clothes fall off...

Oh yes, I remember this feeling so well! Especially early post-op after both surgeries. I knew the weight was coming off, my clothes were loosening up, and yet, I felt like crap AND was recovering from surgery do triply uncomfortable...and still "fat". What helped me was paying attention to these NSVs, just like you did here - clothes falling off is an amazing feeling and there are sooooooo many milestones coming your way! I remember having to use the last hook for my bras, a historical first! Running out of holes on my belt - a double first, since never wore belts before either. My shoe size went down. When I finally left sizes with just a number and an X. You keep feeling good about your accomplishment and the changes, celebrate them all, and I mean that. How we see ourselves can take some time. And yes, as NYB said, very important to not compare yourself to others. The ONLY time I did that? Was I found myself gravitating toward people who posted who had similar stats as me - start weight/height, age, build. That for me gave me a better idea of what my 'big picture' might be. And even then we have to see our own bodies how/as they are. Did you see this thread that Heather/Mariposa posted, pictures of women who all weigh the same - it's very illuminating, check it out: weightlosssurgery.proboards.com/thread/8971/cool-photos-women-same-weightAmy, you are doing great, everyone's rate of loss is different, the only thing that matters is that the scale goes down. Surgery is not about rapid loss, but long-time weight management. It took me almost 18 months to lose the weight I was aiming for, and, I was a lightweight when I had my revision at 240. And I got down to 155 at my lowest. But, it's always good, helpful to read other new post-ops foods, to get ideas. And very important you stop rushing yourself so much! This is a process that takes time, it's really true, a marathon not a sprint. If you do your work, the DS will do its work, just keep being willing/open to trying things, switching it around while you heal and adjust long term to a new digestive system. Yay!!! Your doing so good!!! Keep up the good work! I have not grown out of anything yet my jeans have went from tight to fitting though. And yes I look at my reflection and can't stand it .... Yet. I know you are all right!!! It was just a shocker to look in the mirror because even at work, people cannot stop telling me how good I look. I'm still wearing the same clothes!! I know it's coming...maybe a part of me is still afraid it will all stop...
Amy- here's my daily drill right now:
AM- Protein coffee (1- decaf) Snack-: 2 sausage links with lots of cheese Snack- tuna (2 TBS?)with full fat mayo and 3 cheese cubes Afternoon- 2 TBS cottage cheese and 2-3 cheese cubes Snack- Handful of cashews or nuts Dinner- Whatever protein I make for the fam- last night it was corned beef- about two forksful, I also had 1/2 a very tiny round potato with lots of sour cream
I'm full all day. I can't eat more because the rest of the tie is spent drinking!
What are you eating?

Aw, yes, that fear is very understandable, many us experience it - "I failed all the other times so I'll fail at this too". It really is a process, takes time for us to see ourselves the way other people see us, strange as that sounds. We can push ourselves pretty hard trying to get down to our numbers, but when we do that, we don't notice all these great things like pants falling off. And to work on that along with your eating, you're doing the best thing, you're active in a support community where you can talk about anything, 24/7. Support forums were a lifeline for me both surgeries. Nothing like talking to people who are going through the same thing you are.
Amy, great to ask for what she is eating! You're close to each other post-op time and it's natural to focus a little more on people who are in a similar place for ideas.
The whole process can be so overwhelming, and while you are learning new tools that will carry you through a lifetime, sometimes this has to be done in baby steps, mini-goals, objectives to help adjust. You both are doing so well so make sure while you're struggling, anxious to give yourself credit for ALL you are doing to be healthy!

Thanks Sheryl ! I am so pleased with how much better things have progressed this week. I need to do exactly what you said and make mini goals this week. I go back to work next Monday and a schedule will not be an option then Right now I am eating EAS protein shakes. A half at a time. Light and fit Greek yogurts (vanilla, cherry, blueberry) half at a time. Cottage cheese a few bites Sharp Chedder Cheese cubes Oatmeal with butter and almond milk Refried beans with melted cheese Pk roast with sweet baby rays BBQ Jiffy pbutter I can not tell a lie... I've stollen a few chips when the family is eating them, a few sugar free caramels and a bite of my sons honey bunches of oats cereal. Not sure how bad that makes me I need to add in something that will make me go to the bathroom. It's about to drive me nuts!

Where are you on your vitamins, Amy?
You can add in a couple of doses of Magnesium Oxide to help you go.
Do not eat "lite" anything. Switch to the full fat.
Also, the sugar free caramels are fine as a treat and enough of them should have you running to the bathroom.

Plus sizes are made with a looser fit and much use of elasticized waistbands so they "fit" longer whether going up or down the scale. It can take forever before you realize that you can actually wear a smaller size. I recommend elastic waist flowing skirts as you lose for this reason. They will last you longer. Take heart that, once you are in normal sizes, that 38 pound loss will probably equate to 3-4 sizes down. If you haven't been taking photos in front of a door, you should start now. Your loss in size will be more apparent to you in comparison month by month when you can see those photos side by side. Congrats on the awesome loss!

Not sure how bad that makes me I need to add in something that will make me go to the bathroom. It's about to drive me nuts! This is good Amy, menu-wise. As for your 'bites' - they never make you bad, they make you human, big difference. For people who don't have eating issues, no big whoop at all, tiny amount, and you move on. But two things: they can't interfere with how much protein you get in; and if you have carb/food issues, than we have to think about things more than people who don't have these issues. A few sugar free caramels sounds good; so is sugarfree jello, pudding, popsicles, fudgesicles. Very often the few bites for people who have carb addiction issues kick start other cravings, and make it harder to fight them off. For instance someone brought bagels in for a birthday. I know I can have 'one' and it won't be a big deal, especially now at nearly 2.5 years out, I just factor it in for the day for the rest of what I'm eating. I will eat less carbs at another meal since bagels have so many. However, bagels for me? Big trigger food, I can't always eat 'just one' which is why I never keep them in the house. And right now because I'm very stressed at work and in my family life, like anyone, that's when I want 'comfort food'. So, here's what I did so I didn't become a bagel eating machine. I had my own breakfast first - eggs, sausage, my savory cream cheese pancakes. Then, for one of my mini meals later, I had a half bagel piled with mustard, salami and muenster cheese. My first year post-op I steered clear of pizza and bagels and brought them back later on, used alternatives in the meantime to 'scratch my itch'. Its definitely more challenging when you have a family around who eats other things; have always said this is one time for sure I was fortunate to be single and in total control of my fridge/cabinets/pantry. Now I live around people and it's been fine, I just have my own things to grab: lots of brown rice crackers, Wasa krisp bread, , soy-flaxseed tortilla chips, cream cheese pancakes in sweet and savory flavors, Udi's gluten free bread, high protein cereals like Go Lean Kashi Crunch. I eat protein and fat with all of these. More fat might help you go to the bathroom, if you want to give this a try before going the magnesium route. I can't remember how you're doing with some specific foods, so here's some I thought of, also based on teachermomolp's menu that were worked for me early on. I did better with ground turkey, some soy/tofu products while I worked my way back up to full meats. Trader Joes has been my favorite go-to for alternative chips/crackers - soy flaxseed tortilla chips and these yummy mini brown rice/edamame grain crackers, perfect size, scratch the itch, no problem staying in my 50g carb guideline for the day. Swift brown 'n serve sausages, either the beef or turkey flavor tuna/egg/shrimp/crab salad with whole mayo; eat with homemade cheese crisps; Beef or turkey meatballs, with butter and parmesean cheese, alfredo sauce; family might like this too, they get pasta, you skip that part but this is soo yummy you won't miss it Ground turkey chili or ground turkey taco meat - add sour cream, cheese, avocado, with with soy flaxseed tortilla chips; or ground beef if you tolerate it Mini drumsticks- any flavor you like, I baked them - sometimes teryaki, sometimes low-sugar bbq, buffalo with ranch for dipping Puree tofu into soups, it makes them creamy, adds a complete protein and tastes good Soy-flaxseed tortilla chip nachos - melted cheese, sour cream, salsa, avocado or guacamole Boca Chikn' patties - dipped in ranch dressing Butter, mayo, ranch dressing are all good fat add ons, so are guacamole/avocado, olives.

I am so glad things are improving! I find that I need cream to keep me regular. You could start with half a cup of heavy cream spread through the day. Add it to the yoghurt, oatmeal and cottage cheese. You will begin to understand why we eat crackers under slices of butter, coconut oil in our coffee, slabs of cheese, dark chocolate, and FAT BOMBS.
Soon all your clothes will be falling off.

I also love 'fluff' - full fat cottage cheese, cool whip, heavy cream and chocolate sugar free pudding mix, yummy, tastes like tiramisu filling!

FLUFF? I have all of those ingredients in my house right now. YUM!!! Amy- check out the recipe board. I found some GOOD ideas over there. And soy/flaxseed chips? I'm dying for chips!
Went out to lunch with my hubby for sushi. No rice for me. I had a tuna hand roll minus the rice. It was so good and I couldn't finish it. I ate two pieces of beef teriyaki off his plate with a spoonful of rice. I felt so guilty. But then I stopped myself. WHAT FOR?? I gotta get used to this. I really think I need couseling again- this is all just so different. This way of eating is soooo different. And I love it!

Sheryl, Those are great food ideas, I will add some in. I don't love meat so this is so challenging to get protein from meat. I didn't know Alfredo sauce was ok to have. I figured it was loaded with carbs. Will for sure add this in. A lady at work makes a dip with only cream cheese and green olives. She pours a little of the juice in also. I could put that on some cheese crisps also. Yummy! I know what you are saying about awakening the beast. I deal with that by not buying things I can't have to keep in the house. If my family wants certain things that either have to buy one serving or go out and get it. My will power sucks! We have lots of treats at work but I rarely partake as I don't want people to judge the fat girl making the walk of shame to get her cake or donuts

Just a word of caution: the DS is not a free pass to eat cake and donuts and not gain a pound. Not at all. Exactly. One of many reasons we stress working hard during the early recovery time, the maximum loss window. Teachermomolp - glad you found the recipe board, yep, FLUFF! Can I tell you this recipe has been around for-evuh? It was one of the first treat recipes I learned in my RNY days and I still love it. While I'm at it? Making cheesecake is a piece of cake; and tastes good without crust, so does quiche. Which, you can make with all the butter, heavy cream, bacon and cheese you like As for therapy, I'm fan, went for the first time 20 years ago, and done tunes up since then. I love the way we can eat; it's the best of what I learned about a protein-focused, moderate carb lifestyle, and the DS really makes it WORK. Not having to eat 'light' low fat any more?! And yes, there are SO many great products available now that are healthy alternatives, never been better in terms of options. I needed a salty crunch too, and the soy flaxseed tortilla chips rocked it for me, ate them with everything - cheese, hummus, peanubutter, deli meat. Amy- awaken the beast is exactly it, great expression, I'm going to be using it regularly So exactly, for those of us who have food issues, certain foods push the buttons; best advice I got from my first mentor, she told me to steer clear of my trigger foods for a year to help me get past the cravings and mental dependency. At the time, in 2002, I was that sick with food issues that I thought it made sense. We can't abstain from food, we have to learn to live with the devil; but a combination of steering clear for awhile in a healthy way, learning about all the delicious alternatives, and knowing eventually we can work things back in, when we have better tools is doable. Alfredo, nope, the carbs are in the pasta, you can do the back float in alfredo sauce. Lots of people like it with seafood too, like shrimp. In fact, all those yummy one-pot casseroles? Eat all the meat, vegetables and creamy sauce - canned cream soups are a favorite for me. They taste good by themselves, without noodles/rice/potatoes; and eventually you can add some back in. So for meat-is there a particular type of form, or is it all in general that you don't care for?

You can dissolve calcium in your water and drink it down. At least start taking a couple of chewable multivitamins a day. Because you can eat so little and combined with your malabsorption, vitamins are very important. Throw in a couple of Magnesium Oxide doses to loosen your bowels a bit.

Amy, meant to also say you can get calcium citrate chews at GNC, can order it online too, they carry EAS too and have good web sales. Or if you sign up for a GNC card, you get a discount the first week of every month. EAS also makes high protein, low carb bars, which are a nice candy snack alternative, the EAS brand is also called Myoplex. Regular drugstore only carry calcium chews and we need the citrate. You can take a multi chewable, just no gummies, gels.

But it can be fun to *uck with people.. especially ones that may have been a critical of you when you were fat..

I will definitely be picking up some multi vite chews this weekend. Thanks!!
