Thanks EN! I have some strong opinions on that too - I think the only reason I was drawn back to the church was because of Pastor Tim. He's a strong Christian and encourages that life in others, but he's not hyper-"religious" if you know what I mean? He actually said "Stop being 'religious' about this fast. This is not about 'religion'. This is about making time for God. Not doing something because "the church said so". " I love him. ANYHOOOO, thank you so much for your replies. Hearing from a DSer that also understands spiritually what I'm trying to accomplish has been more than valuable. Not sure I'll ever be able to pay you back for ALL the guidance you've provided (even back when I was lurking and you weren't even aware that you were providing any!), but I'll sure as hell try to pay it forward. Thanks so much - EXALT!!!

For anyone truly interested or concerned that a person could not get enough complete protien without meat, heres some info.. michaelbluejay.com/veg/protein.htmlOf course the daily intake has to be increased to compensate for WLS patient malabsorption but the facts about protiens in general remain the same. Then again, if you really dont care or protien isnt a problem for you, no worries...do what works for you! Just dont smite me for posting lol!

Do you live with a DS? If so, how long now? How are your labs? The answers to those questions determine your ability to comment to a DSer about vegan eating.

If you follow any advice from that site, you deserve the poor health it will bring you. Virtually everything on that page is factually incorrect for normies let alone for DS'ers. Most vegetables are not complete proteins. This is simply a statement of fact. Humans need complete proteins. This is the fucking definition of complete protein. Let me repeat that. The whole idea of a complete protein comes about by considering exactly which amino acids we cannot produce for ourselves. The definition of a complete protein is one that contains those required amino acids. An incomplete protein must necessarily be completed by a complementary food in order to be useful to us as human beings. We can quibble about exactly when that needs to happen--and the foods may not need to go into our mouths at exactly the same time--but it is an utterly incontrovertible fact that incomplete proteins must be completed to be useful to human beings. His assertion that it is impossible NOT to get enough protein is just bare stupidity, and again, I don't need to bring malabsorption into the picture. It's a dumb and wrong assertion even for normies. Protein malnutrition is a real thing and you are advocating it by linking to that site. That site is nothing but stupidity typed up and put into HTML format. Shame on you for promoting it. Absolutely no one who cares about his or her health should follow its advice.

Hey everyone! I'm STILL pre-op (seems like this is taking FOREVER!), but I'm trying to do somewhat of a post-op diet. Not as high in fat but definitely high protein, lower carb. My question is this - every year in January we do a "Daniel Fast" for 3 weeks. We start next week. This is basically a full vegan diet - no yeast, no dairy, no meat, no sweeteners, no processed food, etc. I started to think, how will I do this after my surgery? I know I can have soy and tofu, etc, but how do you get protein in from just veggies? Also, is there a protein shake that is vegan in nature (no whey or animal sources)? Thanks all! We started the Daniel Fast on Sunday and after a few days I had to eat protein. I started feeling sluggish and weak, even though I was eating beans (which gave me a whole lot of gas), nuts and protein shakes, it wasn't enough. I modified it with fish and I feel much better. My pastor was fine when I called him to tell him I added fish to my diet (he knows I had WLS). I hope this helps.

I can tell if I've slacked on protein for just a couple of days.

Chicarita,
I remember reading a post on the other site from a woman in the Middle East who was trying to figure out how to meet her nutritional needs during Ramadan. Her spiritual leader gave her similar advice. It sounds like you have a good understanding of what you need to do to stay healthy.
I think that the timing of your surgery will also be important. If you get the DS this summer, you'll be 6 months or so post-op and should be able to eat more than if you just had surgery a month prior. Know what I mean?
