Hey Guys, what does a fissure feel like. I have had some frequent loose stools over the last couple of weeks and now it kinda feels sore when I poop (sorry if this is TMI but not sore on the outside but sore on the inside?? make sense?). Can these be healed ourselves if they are not really serious?? Any tips/experience/advice gratefully accepted!

I refer you to Diana Cox's post on the Other Website about fissures. Short answer, yes, we can treat them ourselves. But yours sounds more like hemorrhoid pain.

I'm hoping it is a hemorrhoid, rather than a fissure. From what I've seen, they take a long time to heal. One could say that getting over a fissure is a pain in the ass. (Sorry, but that bad joke was just sitting there begging to be typed.)

As a chronic sufferer of hemmroids, and having many of them "lanced" in the ER or doc's office......I hope it isn't a fissure cuz apparantly those make hemmroids look like a walk in the park.....and I assure you THEY ARE NOT!!

If it kinda hurts, it is NOT a fissure. Be very glad. I had a fissure and felt like I had a rather large red hot poker about 2" up my bum ALL THE TIME. Then frequently, it hurt really bad. Seriously, anything that made my poor sphincter move caused such pain, I didn't know whether I would pass out or puke. I never did pass completely out, but got the fade-y vision several times. I did throw up a few times. Handy to have that small trash can near the commode. I have a pretty good pain tolerance, or so I thought. That thing damn near did me in. I had surgery 10/20/11 and felt NO pain when I woke up. Of course, I was chock full of morphine, but even after I got home, I had moments of discomfort, but not even in the same universe as before.

Hemorrhoids can hurt, fissures really f#$%&* hurt. Hard not to cry out in pain when you go. Like shitting glass.

I agree. "Kind of sore" on the inside is not a fissure, but probably an internal hemorrhoid (also not pleasant). But, a fissure's not-pleasant-ness is blatantly obvious. That feels like you're pooping a knife out and then your sphincter goes into crazy muscle spasms that don't let up for hours...
Hope you get to feeling better soon, though. No butt problem is a pleasant butt problem.
I actually think witch hazel pads are nice for a sore bum (brand name for bum pain is Tucks, though you can also just buy witch hazel and put it on a tissue or cotton ball).

How to avoid a fissure:
Good rectal care: * Don't get constipated - more fiber! * Don't get frequent bouts of acidy diarrhea - more fiber to absorb the acid * LET SHIT HAPPEN!! Do NOT strain to poop - practice zen pooping, without bearing down, let the peristaltic action do the work. * Keep it clean * DO NOT spread your asscheeks apart when pooping, even though it feels like that will help it get out with the least fuss and muss - if you stretch the skin around the sphincter, it is more likely to tear with a big hard turd, or even a spasmy diarrhea. * Sitz baths at the first sign of irritation.
And if it doesn't feel like you're shitting broken glass and scalpel blades, it ain't a fissure.

Thanks guys,it hurts when I poop but not like "shitting glass" and it feels like throbby for an hour or so after my morning poops.....I hope it is just an internal roid....Anyway, I am going to follow the program just in case!
If I remember it is: Miralax in morning coffee Colace at night Benefiber (how much and when???) Sitz baths (Do you put anything in the water and what kind of temp does it need to be?) No straining
anything else I need to remember??

My doctor had me Prep-H and Vaseline the rectum before going, and it did help a bit. I also use Wet Wipes after, which is much more comfortable than tissue alone.
If you can get your hands on a Peri bottle (usually seen in the Labor/Delivery areas of hospitals), do it. The blood post-movement always freaked me out.
I also took anti-acids to help prevent the acid. Ouch!
