I took Pepcid in the hospital but Dr Spaw didn't have any recommendations for it after I went home. I was just wondering if anyone took or still takes an acid reducing med. I've had a really hard time with nausea that Zofran isn't helping so I decided to start taking Pepcid again.
What do y'all think? I see Dr Spaw on Thursday and will bring it up for sure.
Thanks!

People have recommended I take a PPI after my surgery. I tried Prilosec at first which works for a lot of people but didn't quite work enough for me. I went to Prevacid and it seems to be working now. Doc just bumped me up to twice daily.

I take 2 omeprezoles a day. One in the a.m. and one in the p.m. If it is extended release I cut it in two to absorb it better.

Almost all of us had to take a PPI or some other type of acid reducer early out. Most surgeons recommend them and give you an Rx. And yes, excess acid can present as nausea.

Fuck yeh I was breathing acid like Alien. I took the maximum dose of Omeprazole and drank ant-acid from the bottle like a drunk. It was miserable. It gets better!

I dont think you'll get by without one. The acid tends to calm down around 4-6 months, but until then - yikes - yes you will need one. I had Omeprazole and also ate Pepcid after every meal, which really helped. My surgeon told me it should be gone by month 6 and it was.

I seem to be the odd bird here. Never took anything for acid. Never vomited for 2 years until a kidney stone hit me. Very rarely do I have stomach issues.
Either I have a system that just accepts this surgery or my surgeon did a fantastic job doing what he does inside when he cut me.

Prilosec was my godsend med. I'm surprised your surgeon didn't send you home with a rx for something.

Thanks everyone....looks like it could be acid causing my issues with nausea. I'm gonna try the Pepcid and if it doesn't cut it, I'll try some Prilosec or Prevacid. :-)

I was given a prescription for Protonix and absolutely needed it for the first 3-4 months. Now I don't need to take any sort of acid reducer.

Yep, I absolutely needed it. The Pepcid did nothing for me. So Larra here on the board recommended Prilosec (omeprezole) and it did the job. I don't need to take it daily anymore but when I start feeling like i need it I take it for a day and I'm in good shape.

I don't think a fantastic surgeon can help DSers avoid having acid issues if they're going to have them.

I was sent home with Pantaprozole (at least that is what is called here) and told to take once a day in the morning. I upped to once in the morning and once in the evening as the reflux was awful at night. Told the surgeon next time I saw him and he was fine with it. Now I very really take it.

My surgeon routinely prescribes an acid reducer/proton pump inhibitor for the first three months from surgery. I took omeprezole. I never had any problem with acid (before the surgery or after). Dunno if the rx prevented the reflux problem or maybe I would have been fine without it, but better to take it "in case", than to be trying to fix a problem with my gut afterwards. I wanted my tender tummy to have every possible support so it could heal well

Never had a problem until after this surgery. Now I have to take Prilosec daily or suffer the consequences.

Was given an acid reducer for the first couple of months. I haven't taken anything since and have been trouble free. YMMV

My surgeon prescribed prilosec in the hospital and had me take it for a month. Since being off of it I have not had any problems. Heartburn once or twice but that was from some spicy flavors I tried. I miss my spice - I became more sensative to heat but will keep working on it.

My surgeon did not prescribe one and I've only taken something about 8 times in 10 months and it's always because I ate the wrong thing or too much too late at night. If I'm careful about what I eat before bed I don't have need for an acid reducer. I only used one occasionally prior to surgery also.

Thanks for all the input... I took pepcid for a week but stopped and haven't had any more trouble thankfully.
