I am over two years out and my hair never came back. It is better than it was a six month out, but still very thin. I think this was due to my thyroid levels getting totally out of whack. I am working with my PCP to get it straightened out. I truly believe that I get the right amount of protein but that could also be a factor. There is also the chance that it is age related. Is there any chance of getting my hair back at this point or have I done permanent damage? My hair was my little vanity but I will trade it for my good health any day!

I am 3 years out this coming March and my hair never came back either. I know some others who have had the same problem. Just part of any surgery that is major and sometimes this happens. At this point I'm not sure mine will ever come back so I wear extensions.

I'm almost 4 years post op, and had issues with iron (even pre-op) as well as thyroid, which we are only now getting that leveled out.
My hair is not back to it's full normal, but improving. Even now, at this late date, new hair is starting.
So, I'm not sure if it was the iron, thyroid, or protein, since all are likely culprits, and I may not ever have it the same, but it IS improving, even now.
It's tough, cuz my guy has such thick hair, that he can't even contain it in the large size ponytail band. He has zero appreciation for his hair, and having a tenth (really, even a tenth) of his would be thicker than I have now.

Mine won't even stay in a rubber band. It is like baby hair. Whahhhh I an so happy to hear there is a chance of rectifying this. I was even thinking of getting one of those frizzy perms that you see octogenarians wearing LOL

I hate to say it but I am looking forward to the hair loss. I have always had way to much hair and its super thick. Hair dressers have always been in shock when they see my hair saying they have never seen hair this thick. I will gladly give it up since its such a pain the way it is.

I'll have to upload some of my wig pics. I now collect hats and hair and have lots of fun with it. It's a great kick to see how people react to my different 'dos .

To help camouflage very thin area I'm using Rita Hazan root touch up spray. It works better than Toppik hair sprinkles and the Joan Rivers product. I'm nearly three years out and it hasn't come back but my thyroid levels have been impossible to get properly regulated. Female pattern baldness or whatever it's name would be also runs in my family so I have another ding against me.

Pre surgery with all the new vitamins, and "D" my hair became thicker, with new growth. 4 months post surgery I noticed more in the brush and shower drain. Somewhere I read not to wash hair as often to prevent hair loss. Not sure this makes any difference, my drain has twice the hair, washing every other day. Endocrinologist is working on regulating thyroid meds post surgery with malabsorbtion. My hair is thinner with my hypothyroid condition too.

Over the last 2-3 weeks, I'm seeing my hair fall out. Not in clumps, just all over, I think. I used to be able to wash my hair and have several strands come out in my hand when I rinsed; now, I get a handful. And, when I brush after washing, I used to be able to see the brush base when I finished, now there's so much, I can't. I have had fine hair but tons of it all my life until now. I had trouble getting it in a large barrette and wrapping a hair band (vs rubber) more than twice. Now, the barrettes are beginning to slip down the hair and I can wrap the band around four times. I too had some vanity in my hair and will have trouble adjusting if it doesn't stop and grow back some. I will be paying careful attention to my 3-month lab results for protein, thyroid, and iron and will certainly address them. But, if it doesn't grow back, I know I'll have to accept it but, not until I try to address all possible causes.
EN... would love to see the wig pics.

Here's a link to an article that discusses what in your labs you need to have done. bariatrictimes.com/2008/09/19/the-latest-on-nutrition-and-hair-loss-in-the-bariatric-patient/Iron and zinc are also factors according to this.

I should have stated in my original post that, typically, the hair grows back and loss is temporary after surgery. I hate to worry all the newbies because my condition is not the norm. I have lost hair in the past due to health traumas and it returned, but some other factor was at work this time.

My hair never came back to its former glory either and my DS was in August 2009. My hypothyroid levels have not changed since pre-op and my labs look great. I am thinking I am going to be checking out some wigs.
