I checked into DRMC 12/10. Bright eyed bushitailed. Projected for a 4 hour RNY to VS surgey. I woke up 2 hours later. Great news. Healing well walking day one. NGtube out day 2. Swallow test clear. But man there was this oder and a chalky whitish substance in one of the drains.
One week following Dr.quickly rolled me into the OR did an exploratory to see if there was some sort of leak around the peritoneum (?) ...another NG tube)
I now have 1 Jtube, 1 T Tube, 3 other drains. Hopefully I will be home by 2013. Who knows I have good days and bad days. My marriage is not good.We both still l have jobs hopefully this will be the case later as I will need 2-3 weeks after the hospital to really gain my mental capacity.
exhausted more later Whit

Sorry this is so difficult for you and may your marriage and job be stronger and more secure than you knew.
I was @ Delano with Dr K and thank goodness I had him, as my liver was in very bad shape and he took all the correct precautions. I am well now from 9-25-12. He is a great Dr. and my surgery was a hour and a half longer than intended. There was no way to know this was going to happen as all my labs looked perfect pre-op. I am so glad we had a gifted Doctor ... sometimes things don't go as we've planned. I have imagined what it could have been in less experienced hands.
Be well soon with some celebrations hopefully.

Sorry to hear this. Revisions are not easy, even in the best of hands. It sounds like you're getting great care, and you are in the best of hands with Dr K. This will resolve for you, and hopefully soon.
I'm sorry to hear that you have additional stress with your marriage and job over this. There will come a day when you look back at this as only a delay in your recovery. It's hard to see that now. I also had to be re-admitted for a few weeks after my DS, I know how depressing it can be to lay there wondering what you did, worrying about the rest of your life, and just waiting to get better. Hang in there. It will happen.

Whit, I'm so sorry you are having complications, both with your surgery and in the rest of your life as well. As far as the surgery goes, we definitely see more complications with the RNY to DS revisions than with anything else. It sounds like Dr. K is on top of things and hopefully you will now get better, though being in the hospital for the holidays sucks.
Wishing you a happy holiday in spite of everything, and hoping for better days soon ahead.

Hi Whit. Was joking away with Dr. K. all last week myself Kidding. At 5 days, I didn't know if I wanted to yell at him or me for doing this. I so sorry to hear you are having to wade through a swamp in army boots wearing leather clothes. That's what it feels like to me some times trying to heal from this. Some times it's just so hard to make it though to the next pain meds dispensing. I know Dr. K. will make it right. You're in the best of hands for what you face. No matter what happens from this surgery (the job or wife disappears), you can recover from it and probably have a better life after you get rid of dead wood. Today is just a dark day and the pain is raging. Try to forget about external forces and focus on you and the healing. Cause later, you will be a healthy, happy, good looking guy (who might be single next year ) who is focused on his goals and able to haul ass and pull his life back together if he had to. I keep telling myself it's still worth it, if we can just get through it....

Hello, I was dischaged on 12/31. With Feeding tube, and 2 drains. We drove 3 hours and spent the night in Merced then home to Richmond (bay area). I am still NOP or NPO- nothing by mouth- so no food not even water since 12/10. I finally got on the scale this morning and am down abot 26 pounds in one month. I am sure this is due to the lack of solid foods.
It has been bitter cold here so I have been walking up and down the stairs and doing laps around my dinning room.
I rented a walker and plan to start walking my neighborhood tomorrow no matter the cold.
I have terrible pain arround the incision sites and have been prescribbed Hydromorphone (delloted-SP). TMI I have gas but no BM for a week.
Dr. K is suposed to call with a date for me to come down and have all tubes remmoved. Hopeflly this will be n a week or 2.
More later Whit

Hi Whit, well, I'm glad you're home, but I know this has been very hard. Did Dr. K diagnose with you something specific, is it now fixed? NPO unfortunately is the most common treatment for GI complications, its the only way for the insides to fully heal, have no distress. I went through this process in my first WLS (RNY), and I know it's hard. Not surprising you don't have a BM, since you're not eating real food, but staying hydrated and doing protein through the feeding tube then?
I really hope this is behind you sooner rather than later!

So glad you're home! Dr. K must have felt it was safe for you to leave the hospital. I bet going in the door and being in your own familiar surroundings with your pets was a great feeling. I hope the drains get removed soon and that all this will soon be nothing more than a crappy memory.
