Eating ability: DS v. RNY

It's no secret that you can eat much more with the sleeve of DS versus the pouch of RNY. However, over time with the DS the food continues to empty normally like cause of the pyloric valve preservation. With time on RNY, doesn't food start to empty quicker where people can "snack more" or eat more frequent? Kind of like lubricating the lapband and pushing food through with water?

I realize you can eat much more with DS in the short term, but what is it like 5 years out? 10? How do they compare?

I'm over 9 years out. I still can't eat half as much at one time as I did before my DS, and I was not a gorger or binger. But I can be ready to eat again in 2 hours, and I can be STARVIN' in 3-4 hours.

I'm almost 10 years post-op and can eat a significant amount of food at one sitting -- at times. I can eat a 6-8 ounce steak, along with half a baked potato and a few bites of veggies. Half a sub goes down just fine or a regular sandwich. In truth, I eat like a "normal" sized person.

Like Diana, after I eat I'm usually starving 3-4 hours later - I have never figured out why but I never question it!

The "abiility" to eat more as time goes on with RNY is one of the reasons the rate of weight regain is so high with RNY. Also one of the causes of reactive hypoglycemia, because if/when the stoma widens, food just falls out of the pouch into the small intestine with no regulation. Many people with RNY struggle with weight regain through no fault of their own, because if the stoma widens they have no restriction and they already have little/no malabsorption of calories. That leaves them with...nothing.

With the DS, yes, the sleeve stretches somewhat over time, and we can eat more. But this is ok, because emptying of the stomach is still regulated by the pyloric valve, AND we continue to have significant malabsorption of calories.

I had an RNY and within about 5 years of my RNY, I was able to once again eat as much as I could have before the RNY. No pyloric valve to regulate stomach emptying, so it shot through me pretty quick. Didnt need to drink to push food through quicker, it just did it on its own. I also was one of those people who didnt dump, so I could eat all the carb loaded crap I could get in and not have it affect me.

I am only 6 months out from my DS revision, so I cant give you any sort of long term information. Thankfully some of the longer term vets were able to chime in with their input.

At almost nine years out, I have significant restriction in that I can't eat nearly as much as I could pre-op---but I certainly can eat enough food that I'd be back at my pre-op weight were it not for the malabsorption of the DS.

I'm six years out. I generally eat amounts that the NUTs consider sensibly sized portions. Sometimes I can eat a little more, and some days I can't each much of anything. It varies. Every once in a while, I can eat a larger-than-sensibly-sized portion, but it's still a small fraction of what I ate preop.

I didn't want to have to live on half a cup of food three times a day like that moron NUT said I'd have to do with RNY.
