I have definitely fallen out of love, like, or even respect with my band. It is just not working well for me, has not since my first 6 months. However today I took care of a pt in recovery that successfully lost and has kept off 178 lbs with a lapband! Granted she was there for an upper endoscopy and had all kinds of inflammation that was found. But if I were going to be honest I would trade a little gastritis for even a 100 lb loss. Especially seeing as I have reflux issues as it is.

Hi Michelle, I am also a banister since July of 2006 and it has not worked for me as well I probably lost a total of 30 -40 pounds and gained that back and then some, my BMI is 41.9, but I am always happy when I see that it can work, I just feel I need something with malabsorption and the DS would be perfect for me. I tried with my band because I have a friend that got it the same time I did and she looks amazing, I was feeling like such a failure because I tried everything in my power to get it to work, it is not malfunctioned although Dr. Roslin states it look loose but I can not keep any of the good foods down with or without a fill, therefore I resorted to trying diet pills again that we're supervised by a nutritionist, that didn't work either, therefore I am now seeking a revision. My aunt just passed away with diabetes my mother is diabetic and insulin dependent, my cousin is in a diabetic coma and I am terrified the weight will kill me. Any other banisters reading this please know I am not bashing the band it is just my personal experience and not right for me.

Michelle the thing is it *can* occur. The band does work for *some* ppl. I know some very successful bandsters. But they are just a few years out. And I only know one that has made it 5 years without complications and at least one more surgery!
However as you know, I do very well know what you mean. I would LOVE to be one of the LUCKY ones! Unfortunately that did not happen. Just seems so unfair at times that one person can get it and be just as, or in some cases even more compliant than another..........and still not have the band work. Hopefully one day soon they will get recalled and removed from the market so other don't have to go through what we have!
Hope u win! :-)

Hang in there - any luck on the revision front? Kim Thanks Kim, No. Unless my insurance changes within the next few years or I win the lottery I don't see a revision as more than a hope. I already self paid for a band, a revision to that, various fills and unfills and have pretty much bankrupted myself. I'm not eager to repeat that scenario.

I too hear what you say Michelle! We are both stuck in the same spot! Someday we WILL get rid of these things and get our revisions. It's simple one of us had to win the lottery and we'll pay for the other one to get their revision, see easy peasy. I wish you nothing but the best and our day will come!

It's always nice to see someone who has done well. I too was a self-pay for surgery, fills, unfills, more fills, more unfills. Nasty. But now my band is causing problems (dysmotility) and it slipped. Plus my port is flipped so they can't unfill it. Working with insurance now and hoping they will pay for the DS. But I've decided that, even if they don't, I'm paying myself. I can't keep living like this, the pain, the puking, the choking at night. Blech. Someday there will be a big class action lawsuit and all of our revisions will be paid!

I'm with you on the future class action - its not something that would surprise me AT ALL. I take full responsibility for not doing a better job of educating myself four years ago when I got the damn thing, but there were a lot of people spooning the lies out with a big grin on their face.

Hi KMG, like you I should have better educated myself before I chose to get a major surgery in which I knew nothing about. I stupidly put my faith in my surgeon and let him give me a *bleeped* up story on how wonderful I will do if I get the band, he was telling me some crap about how my shape will go good with the band, what kind of crap is that, FAT is FAT, excuse me I'm just pissed with myself because now i have a BMI of 41.9 high blood pressure and have to fight to get a revision

You know what though, I did a LOT of research - or so I thought - when I had my band done. There just wasn't as much discussion out there about these types of issues 5 years ago.
BUT I do blame myself for not looking more deeply into other options. I had never even heard of the DS until Diana Cox (cue angels singing) posted about it when I came back to "fix my failure and get back on track" with my slipped band.
Didn' t make this same mistake this time - I know the DS is for me.
Now if I could only convince my insurance company of that......

Chicarita - I think you hit the nail on the head. A lot of this information wasn't available years ago. I did my research (including the DS and VSG) before I got my lapband and I'm very happy with both my band and my results and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. However, there have been a lot of people who've "done everything right" and had a bad outcome with the band. Whether it's a problem with their body and it's reaction to the band or a bad doctor varies but there's no question that are definitely bandsters out there with problems.
There are lots of reasons for people to pick one surgery over another and it isn't just a lack of info about the options.

I have IBS now and not only is it incredibly painful, but the random attacks can be extremely inconvenient.
