I am having a revision with Dr. K on August 20. I had a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty in 1992 and lost some weight but not enough, now Dr K has determined I have a fistula, that the food found a second path through and that's why my weight loss stopped. Anyway, I am feeling very excited about losing weight and and a little afraid about the recovery. My immediate reason for the surgery is knee problems, hard to get around for the last few months. My primary care MD hopes weight loss will fix my knees without knee surgery. I am a VERY healthy 69 years old, and I wonder if many people my age have had WLS? I'd love to hear some success stories about that. Also I don't know what type of protein drinks to get. Is whey protein a milk product to avoid, or is it the best type of protein to get? I am very lucky that I work in the same building with Keliblue (from these boards) and she is my fountain of knowledge 2 years out from her DS and looking just fabulous! Anyway I would love to hear from anyone who had a VBG to DS or other revisions about how your recovery went, what I should be specially aware of, protein drinks and good stories about 69+ year-olds doing great after surgery!!! Thanks for any comments in advance. Mary Helen

I had a revision with Dr Keshishian but it was a revision from RNY to DS. Unfortunately, I cannot help with your questions. I just wanted to welcome you to this forum. There are some very knowledgeable veterans on this board and I am sure they will help you. Welcome!

I had a virgin DS at 64 years old and am doing well. Down 130 pounds in less than 11 months. I seem to have some nasal allergies to whey but that is uncommon as far as I can find. My only issues so far have been kidney stones, I am fighting my 3rd battle with multi stones since the surgery but am not sure that it is surgery related. Best of luck!

Wow, Mary Helen, welcome! And YAY for you! I'm 51, had a revision from RNY to DS with Dr. K on Dec. 15, 2011. So I probably can't speak as directly to your questions, but want to tell you you're in good hands. Meellise/Debra is a revision patient, lapband to DS, flew in from upstate NYC and is 61. She's not on here as much because she's helping care for her mother in law, but go ahead and PM her. Where are you located, are you having your surgery in Delano or Glendale? If you'd like an angel or additional support let me know, I live 10 mins away from Dr. K's Glendale office. Glad to have you with us, how inspiring you are!

I've lived in Southern California for 56 years, had to look up Georgetown, you're up north! Well hollah if you're having surgery at Verdugo Hills, and would like additional support, want to meet in person. Or if you go to Delano, there's a gal on here, a little younger than I, who also is a RNY revision to DS, and she lives in Bakersfield. We can be phone or in person, whatever makes you comfortable, if needed!

Hi Everyone, Thanks so much for all your wonderful supportive comments, especially the ones about older revision patients. I am going to have my surgery in Delano, but offer of visits in Glendale are much appreciated. I hope to be able to post after the surgery and will let you all know how it's going. One week from tomorrow!!
