I think i have a soy allergy or sensitivity on top of being lactose intolerant. Background info: Ive been having stomachaches on and off for 2 weeks, did a food journal and the only common thread i could find was soy lecithin. Ive not had any soy for 2 days and have been feeling much better. Ive been searching for a protein shake without milk or soy in it and have been unsucessful Any help would be appreciated! Jen

Why is whey protein out, is it because of the lactose?
ETA: NVM! Apparently I don't read well lol I somehow missed you saying that you were lactose intolerant *shakes head* Maybe I should try opening my eyes when reading ;D

I'm lactose and whey intolerant, but I can handle the egg white protein powder. I use Optimum. It only comes in Rich Chocolate and Vanilla Custard. It does have Soy Lecithin... just looked at the label.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I spoke with a friend this evenig and she recommended Whey Isolates. They process the lactose out of it and it doesnt have soy in it:)
So im going to give Isoflex a whirl!

Take a look at the egg-white powder suggested above or try google 'soy-free egg white powder.
I think that the egg white powder used to cook with is soy-free.
A member of you-know-where, Jenna Lynn was allergic to all the protein powders and used the egg-white stuff.

I am also having troubles with many of the milk/whey based proteins, and have a lactose intolerance. My kids also, with one child testing positive for milk protein allergy. I have been testing out all the various protein powder mixes, and pre mixed types a week at a time. Currently using Nector isolate various juice flavored powder mixed with water- like "Roadside Lemonade" , also" Muscle Milk Lite" pre- mixed, Contains no milk, no sugar, lactose free, 20g protein, 9 carbs, 160 cal bottles. Cafe Late is caffeinated, tastes great. The egg protein made me too full.

[...] I am having a reaction to all the chewable calcium, dries my mouth, tongue sore and making swallowing dry pills difficult. I am unhappy to give up capsules. Using Biotene tooth paste and mouth spray advised by my Dr. Any ideas? Sandra Dr Kemmeter- Grand Health Partners- Mi Just open up your calcium capsules and mix the powder in a little pudding or something and eat it. Capsules do dissolve pretty quickly though. I buy virtually all my supplements in capsule form.

I was using soy to beef up my pudding etc. I think the egg white would be a good alternative and if the isolates dont work then i will be drink it too!!!

Cafe Late is caffeinated, tastes great. The egg protein made me too full. I am 4 months out from D.S. surgery. My stomach feels uncomfortable with real meat and poultry other than rare steak. Relying on protein drinks most days for 120 g protein total. Hot chocolate protein mix( 15g protein) together with Celebrate ENS vanilla cake batter multivitamin, calcium & protein shake powder(25g protein) gives me one meals worth of protein and vitamins for the day. I mix both together in 17oz semi hot water, goes down easily with no tummy pains for me. 2 scoops of Cake Batter= 25g protein=3 Celebrate vitamin capsules. My nutritionist approves of the vitamins, and my Dr just reported a new finding this last week of the inability of capsules dissolving in time to do any good for D.Sers. Splenda can cause stomach pain for some, for everyone in my family but me. I am having a reaction to all the chewable calcium, dries my mouth, tongue sore and making swallowing dry pills difficult. I am unhappy to give up capsules. Using Biotene tooth paste and mouth spray advised by my Dr. Any ideas? Sandra Dr Kemmeter- Grand Health Partners- Mi Thanks for the suggestions. I have Isoflex coming, which is an Isolate but chocolate. No Soy Lecithin in it!!! I second what Kathy said on Vitalady. Those caps dissolve very quickly, i got a drop of water on one of the calcium and didnt realize it, ran to the BR and when i came back like 2 mins later it was mushy and the powder was dissolving thru. I believe the trick it to put your caps in water for 10mins, if it dissolves your good:)

Thanks KathyF & Honeybadger11 for your ideas, much appreciated! My surgeon comes to our D.S. monthly support meeting at Grand Health Partners. He reported the new finding about capsules because he has a few cases of malabsorbtion from D.S people using caps. My numbers are all good from taking pills, not caps. I was instructed to take individual ADEK (minus D) to resolve my high levels of" D" post surgery. Now the "D" is back to normal, I have mostly caps since they go down easier. Considering continuing them until my next blood test to see if caps are working for me. Wonder if taking them after a full meal of solids would slow down their progress through the system? Any one using time release caps successfully? Time release does us no good. Moves thru the system too fast. I highly recommend vitalady. You may know most of this info already but just in case let me say...combined ADEK vites are not enough for us and many other vite qualities are not as good as vitaladys. She has a tried and true system set up that will help keep us DSers out of vitamin deficiencies. Most of her stuff comes in quick dissolving caps. Only my multi and B complex are tablets. Most surgeons do NOT understand what is need nutritionally or supplement wise after the DS and most do NOT recommend enough supplements. I think my surgeon is incredible but i wouldnt rely on him for this info. If i took what he recommended i would be in danger quickly. Also, keep in mind what your surgeon may think is good lab numbers, for us DSers, actually means we are in danger. docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AU46vLsRDC9rZGhranhtcXpfOGNxcDk2c2c0&hl=enThis link has labs that should be ran and if you scroll down, it shows lab ranges that are appropriate for us. I will let you know how the protein goes when it arrives:) jen

My last time release capsule question was about a prescription medication, which has no blood test to determine if there is malabsorbtion. I just don't feel its working even though they upped the dose since surgery.
Thanks for the links for labs Jen. I will compare them to mine when I return from my vacation this week at Disney's Dolphin Hotel. What part of florida are you from? We have lived all over the state- Jacksonville,Port Charlotte,Orlando, Winter Springs. My son was born in Ft. Meyers. We have family here in Orlando. Not looking forward to the long drive home to Mi and the snow.
I have an internist checking my labs and also an endocrinologist/internist- for hypothyroid The last lab I had drawn was all in the normal range, but one part of the thyroid tests were not up to where they should be. This factor is most likely the root of my inability to lose weight without D.S.
I am grateful the D.S. has worked so far, just waiting for some internal mechanism to turn it off, then end of weight loss. I am holding my breath, in hopes i can drop another 50 lb.

Capsule Update: The bariatric capsules for vitamins, and supplements.... are fine for D.S. and others, will dissolve for us. The capsules for prescription or over the counter meds may not be as thin and not break down soon enough, or dissolve in the section of the system they were designed for. My nutritionist sent me this update today after my inquiry about capsules pertaining to our discussion from the past few posts here. ;-) Sandra
