Hi All, I would like to hear from those of you who have had band to VSG revisions. Did you have reflux with the band? Did you have reflux after revision to the sleeve? If so was it the same, worse or less? Did it get better or worse over time after sleeve surgery? Thanks so much for any input you can give me. I am still looking at both the sleeve and rny.

Had reflux then. Have reflux now. But it's better managed now I think because it doesn't hurt like it used to with the band.
I have a larger sleeve though because I was revised from band to DS.

Thanks for the reply. The reflux is my biggest concern with revising to the sleeve. My surgeon recommends rny, in part, because of the reflux. Good to know that it can get better with the sleeve. Thanks again.

Hi- I was revised from band to sleeve and then DS. I had terrible reflux from the band and it was largely gone after the first inadequate (too large) sleeve I was given. After the second sleeve, again no reflux. No reflux from the full DS either. The band did misshape my esophagus and I've had anesth. comment on this when they are trying to intubate me.

This is great to hear. From what I have heard so far the odds are that the sleeve will not make it worse, and just getting rid of the band will probably improve it, no matter what I revise to. I worry about what the band has done to my esophagus as well. Thanks!

I'm almost 8 weeks out from my band to DS revision. I take 20mg of Prilosec every morning & haven't had any reflux problems. (For the first 2-3 months after my band surgery, my reflux was totally out of control. I couldn't find anything that helped.) I have the same surgeon as Chicarita & our sleeves have a 5 oz capacity. I forget the bougie size, sorry. I think you have to weigh the potential for worse reflux with the sleeve against the potential for dumping, reactive hypoglycemia, & vomiting with a RNY.
Good luck with your decision, Shelli

I had some reflux over the years before the band but it got very bad with the band. I had the band removed after 22 months and waited a year before the sleeve for various reasons.
My VSG surgeon told me to take a PPI for six months after the sleeve, then see how it does. He used a 32 bougie (sp?) and I am right at six months out and have had no reflux at all so I may continue the PPI - I'll ask my surgeon at my six month appt coming up.
So yes, bad reflux with the band, PPI plus Sleeve = no reflux. The sleeve is nothing like the band at all, eating is different - the food stays down!!
As a personal comment, I'd rather take a PPI forever than get an RNY - I really, really like to be able to use my pyloric valve!!
Good luck with your decision!!

that was a concern for me as well.
i didn't have much reflux - or any other acid issues, but i had a permanent lump in my chest.
dr stewart put me thru a round of tests & all came up OK...., till he got in & saw what the lap band wanted to do. my liver thanks the fancy lap band makers.
there is so much that does NOT get picked up on any diagnostic test. once in......wow.
and well - i still have that fancy band in a jar & the port is moldy / black..., ya think i can sell it on ebay??

I SO wish I had asked to keep mine!!! And I agree, the damage isn't completely known until they get in there. My sleeve is not 'normal' and I can feel it but it works and I am thankful to not throw up everything!!

Thank you all so much for answering. This has been really helpful. The main plus for the rny was to get rid of the reflux, but I think that it probably won't be as bad with the sleeve as it is now with the band. I can't wait to get rid of this thing.
