Ok hiccuping is a sign of diaphramatic irritation. If you're a couple of days post op it could be the gas they inflated you with playing merry hell. If you are grossly distended and have pain when you touch your belly then you need to get to an A&E department now as you may have an active leak causing this.
Call your surgeon and ask for his/her advice but I'd er on the side of caution and go to an A&E department for advice.

Are you a new DSer? If you're still recovering, anything related to your abdominal area is going to hurt more, you're swollen and irritated.
Some people get hiccups as a sign they're too full - so if you're getting them after eating you could try eating less, or more slowly, and they might stop.

I didn't have any pain to the touch after my surgery and hiccuping didn't hurt me. Maybe I'm the exception but the doctor asked me specifically if i had any pain to the touch and if I did, he wanted me to come back to the hospital. I'm only 3 weeks out so I'm not much ahead of you. Please call your surgeon. There is no time to waste. Thinking of you, Sheri

Well, I called my surgeons office and the nurse said If I don't have a temp. Or the area isn't red,Don't worry about it and he is on vacation Until next week. ?? OK have you over eaten today and did the hiccups start AFTER this? This is important because your Vagus nerve will cause you to hiccup after eating too much with a DS. This is NORMAL! If you eat shit your body hates you will get terrible wind pain and lower abdominal cramping. It is like being in second stage labor allegedly. You will soon after get raging diarrhea and gas which will eventually relieve the pain. Are any of these symptoms ringing any bells? Ok put your hand on you tummy and push slightly. Does it hurt when you take your hand away? Do you have a temperature? Is your belly distended? Right go and think about these and post your answers because that will determine if you should go straight to A&E.

No, I took my temp. And that was fine, I'm not really eating a lot now. Mainy choking down the protien drink. A few bite of things here and there. I don't get the hiccups all the time. Also tried the pulling away of my hand. It doesn't hurt when I pull away but its mainly in one spot that hurts. The nurse didn't seam to really Think it was anything or care much for that matter. ( Sorry for taking over this post). And yes, I have had loose stools.

Hummm, the loose stools aren't horrible if you don't have too many in a day and if you make sure to keep hydrated. But the pain is what concerns me. Perhaps it is nothing and maybe my overly cautious surgeon has made me paranoid. But I'd definitely keep an eye on the pain--listen to your body. I wish you lots of luck and sending you positive thoughts.

Well, I am 9 days post-op and I hiccup too. I know mine is from fullness though. Even drinking brings it on. I am not worried I have no temp, all my incisions look good and the pain in my tummy is only the right side. Which most work was done on that side and I am no longer taking my Tylenol for pain. So I feel a bit more but... I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the information ladies, I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this now, my hiccups are usually one or two big ones and I guess that means I'm full!

Okay. Once you've ruled out any leak, and checked with your surgeon, like a good DSer:
Arch your back when you try to burp. Sit up straight for an extended period of time. Take smaller swallows. And Google "vagus nerve" and read up on that. Our surgery pisses off the vagus nerve, which takes time to heal. Hiccups are a symptom of that, but also can mean you have a leak, or gas trapped still from surgery. This is something you need to check with your surgeon on, ESPECIALLY since you are brand new.
Later on, hiccups will become your "full" gauge when eating. If you eat slow enough, you won't get them. If you're out to eat, ignoring your stomach, hiccups. Stop eating.

Are you taking any acid blockers?
If the hiccups burn it might be acid reflux (this is normal for the first few months post-op), which is why most docs will have you on prevacid or something similar for the first 6 months.
I hiccup when the acid reflux acts up or if I'm approaching full.
