I am 5'4" and weighed 294 at surgery, I'm now 238. My PCP says I should weight 114 but I think he's off his rocker (he likes his women skinny...not that I'm his woman...gross!). I was thinking 135 but my hubby thinks 150 is more realistic.
I don't want to sell myself short but I also don't want to set a goal that is unobtainable. Right now I say that I will never have plastics but I think a lot of that is because the idea of having surgery again scares the shit out of me. My dad thinks that once I hit my goal weight I'll want the excess skin to come off and I know that can weigh quit a bit, depending on the person.
So, how did you guys come up with your goal weight?

Dawn, I had a hard time imagining myself at lower weights. I had been 200+ my whole adult life. Instead, I imagined goal "milestones". For example, I listed out fitting in an airplane seat, walking up stairs without getting winded, shopping in the misses section, etc. I tried to make the number not as meaningful as the milestones.
That being said, once I did those things I did get focused on a number. I set mine as "normal BMI", which for me at 5'6" is 154. I made it to about 150 on my own, and lost another 5-7 pounds with plastics. If you're 5'4" a normal BMI for you would be about 145 pounds. 114 sounds pretty low, and even 135 might not be in reach.
Keep in mind that not everyone makes it to a "normal" BMI. But I've never seen anyone remain morbidly obese, which is the important thing. Average loss is about 85% of your excess weight, so for everyone who loses to a normal BMI there are just as many who lose somewhat less. But as I said, those are just numbers.

I looked at the BMI charts and added 20#. I also did something else that escapes me at the moment. (senior befuddlement) Anyway, formerly obese people usually look better at about 20 or so pounds higher than a person that has never been obese. So at 5'6" i look better at 140 than 120, although I know people that are 5'6" and look really good at 120 or 130. When I was 130, I loked like a skeleton with skin over it YMMV! Dawn

Many years ago I was 260 and then lost all the way down to 120-125 ( which is about right for my 5.5 frame). But at 125 I was emaciated. Doctors seem to fail to take into account the fact that we have loose skin that weighs somewhere between 5-20 pounds (depending on how large you got). So I found that at 145 I was just right. I even looked fine at 150 or 155. THe body dysmorphic side of me liked 125 better but I KNOW from looking at pictures and from hearing from others that I looked best around 150. I just had my DS and I'm setting my goal at 155. I think it's pretty realistic at least until I have plastic surgery (if I ever do so) and cut that extra skin off.
Good luck!

Im like EN. I never set a goal weight with my RNY and I dont have one in mind for my upcoming DS revision. Im pretty hard on myself sometimes, so I always worry about setting some arbitrary number of what my goal would be...and then having to deal with the aftermath if I didnt manage to meet that number.
To my way of thinking, whatever does come off is going to be a good thing for my health and my body. And I can be okay with that.

Never did. My doctor said "you'll stop losing when your body is done". And I did. And when I stopped, I've stayed the same for the past 18 months (give or take a 10 lb range).
Yep, I fluctuate within a 10 lb range....and I'm okay with it. My clothes always fit the same, so it must be fluid.
I weigh every Friday morning just to stay in check.
I too will not let a number on a scale determine my success or failure...this is about lifelong good health and wellness....NOT the labels in my pants or the number on the scale.

I used to be skinny and even when I was 115, I still had a kangaroo pouch at my lower abdomen so I could have probably lost a few more pounds. I am 5' 3.5 but I am very small boned. I decided 115 would be a decent weight for me and I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
I have to mention that even when I was 115 in the past, I was not in a size 2. I wore a 7/8 and could never get below that. I guess it depends on your body type and where you carry your weight.

I'd love to reach a goal weight but my main goal is to be able to shop in the "normal" section and not have to buy things with huge ugly flowers all over it!
My hubby is a biker and I look forward to feeling normal on the back of the bike and not feel like I'm hanging over both sides.
I'm starting to consider the idea of plastics though it really, really scares me for some reason. It looks so darn painful, like they've torn you in half and stitched you back together again.
Although I want to look good, my main concern is being healthy and not being a burden or an embarrassment to my family.
Thank you vets for being vocal on the OtHer board so that I'd know about the DS because I think that you all saved my life and my spirit!

I started out with a goal of 130 some odd pounds. That was short lived. Then I changed it to 140. Then I have a friend who had the DS a couple years before me. We are close to the same height. Our body build is close. Her weight ranges from 150 to 160. She is a size 10. I would be tickled pink to have her success. I have been thinking about plastics lately. It will be a long time before that would happen, but I'm pondering it anywho. Lots of things are on my to do list before plastics. I take excellent care of my skin, and have no break downs. I wear compression clothing all the time. I'm just happy being happy and this wonderful gift will help me get to a good place.
In short I'd love to get to 150ish. But we'll see how I feel as I'm getting there.

I never set a goal weight. I am the same height as you. I was down below 109 the morning of my revision to the DS and I can tell you, as can my DH, that I looked emancipated and sickly. Only mentioning that because 114 seems awful low.
I am now at about 140 but I am not comfortable at this weight. I think I was probably most comfortable at about 130 or so. Even given that I am thankful each and every day that I am not obese and I am not underweight. Been at both ends of the spectrum and neither is fun. :-) I try to focus on where I am at health wise more so then weight wise as long as I do not go to high.

i wanted to be at a normal BMI. But really, once you take in the weight of all that extra skin, a good weight would have been even a little higher than the "normal" BMI. I never struggled to get to any particular weight. My body just decided when to stop losing weight and it did a great job of stopping at the right point. I was ill for a while and lost ten pounds more, but popped right back right away to a good weight.

At first pre surgery, I thought a goal weight of 125, at my tallest 5'4" would be the same weight I was at age 22. I liked the way I felt at that weight. Now after 4 months post surgery, my height is 5"1, some how I lost a couple of inches of height, where I don't know!! I read another post of a 5'!" gal, her doc thought she should be 110 lbs. If I do get that low, I'll be shopping in the petite section, and no one will see me over the racks. ;-) Now a size 10 pants at Lululemon, 4 mo, post surgery, 80 lbs lost. My trainer suggested wearing tight clothes for compression. I believe it has helped my legs smooth out. Wore a bathing suit and shorts around the pool, in Orlando last week, legs were healthy looking- smooth after 2 months working out at the gym, in tight stretch pants.

My doctor set my first goal at 165-- I think that was based on 80% ewl. I when I got close to that, I realized that I wasn't close to finished & I set my sights on a normal BMI which was below 150. I reached that right around one year out and kept losing. I seem to have settled around 130 now. (I'm 18 months out) All that being said, I had absolutely no control over the whole experience & probably should have just hung on for the ride!
