Many of us have talked, half jokingly but half NOT, about making some sort of IQ or at least EQ test a requirement for getting the DS.
In support of that proposal, I submit anyone who claims that the meanies kept them from information that they should have known before picking the surgery that they are now revising to a DS from.

Hummm, when reading her original posting on OH I must have missed that remark about you, Diana. Maybe I wouldn't have passed along the link so willingly. ;-)

We definitely need a "BLOCK" button here. On a good note, I do notice the link to this site showing up in more and more signature lines at the "other" site.

I am always pleasantly amazed at the wit and wisdom from (almost) all DSers posts from (almost) all DSers. Always entertaining!

The IQ D.S. test is real at Dr.K.s office. He won't approve anyones surgery until they pass his D.S questions. Seriously!! I studied all my print outs from my compilation of D.S. charts, diagrams and facts found on line, and some pages were from OH, most likely from you guys!! The main reason knowledge about your surgery is required is to be able to explain exactly the procedure you are having. Dr. K and my husband said the hospital can refuse your surgery if you are clueless why you are there. Dr. K said its happened before. My surgery prep nurse did quiz me, but not to the same extent as Dr. K. Really, if you don't know, they may give you the wrong surgery. If you can't tell them, they wheel you back out. "No surgery for you" !! ;-)

My doctors office gave us a test. Just to bad it was basically a test on the RNY .... good thing did my research and cleared it in a breeze. I loved my pre-op class haha (I was only DSer) the NUT is explaining to class about food and portions then kept pointing to me saying " except you."

Did anyone ask why?

Basically everyone was confused as to why I was so different. I was smallest one there and getting the most potent surgery.... I wan't to reach out to all of them but I just didn't know how...

My surgeon also gives a test. I actually know someone who didn't pass it (one of my in-laws), and he would only offer to do a VSG on her.

Danni, that is really sad. I wouldn't know what to do in that situation either. However, if I was being told to stay away from bacon and butter and the nutritionist excluded someone, I would have approached you and asked why.

Here is my take on the DS IQ.
I see lots of people going off and getting the RnY or the Sleeve. I usually mentioned (pre surgery) that I was getting the DS. "What's that?" they would ask. I'd tell them it was a modified sleeve (and many RnYs didn't even know what a sleeve was) with a reconfiguration of the intestines. I'd tell them I could have a diet that was a bit freer than the other two surgeries and I'd tell them it has a better response on diabetes. I'd also share the long-term studies of maintaining the weight loss. "So what's the drawback?" they'd ask. I would then just explain the vitamin and protein requirements. I'd also recommend going to dsfacts to get more info so that they could see what it was really about.
99% of the people would then say, "Why would you do that to yourself? That's just crazy!"
Almost everyone I've spoken with had never even heard of the DS and yet, if you look up "bariatric surgery" online (even on Wiki) it's listed as one of the options in bariatric surgery. I did LOTS of research when I was looking into surgery. My friend who was getting the RnY at the same time ruled out the DS immediately because she was afraid of the gas, diarrhea, and taking all of those vites. She didn't want to hear about why I wanted the surgery. In my Kaiser Options classes (I attended 3 different groups) I found that no one had heard of this surgery.
So, DS IQ? I feel like if a person who is going to go under the knife for bariatric surgery of ANY KIND doesn't take it upon themselves to do their research on the internet at least, then they probably aren't ready for the DS. Will some of them come over to the dark side and get revisions? Yes. But those people are ready to take that extra step. But the people I've encountered aren't interested in hearing about it. I figure most of the people weed themselves out. I know another person who just joined Kaiser so that she could get the RnY. She KNOWS I got the DS. I saw her the other day, and I even ran right up to her. I'm only 3 weeks out and ran up to her with a big smile on my face. I reiterated that the surgery was great and that I'm doing really well. Her response was, "I'm getting the RnY. I'm not interested in the other surgeries". Again, she's weeded herself out.
I have so far only seemed to impact only one person--a different friend of mine is now going to get the DS when she would have gotten the RnY or sleeve. I KNOW she'll be happy with it. Why did she chose to do it while the others didn't? She did some REALLY good research and found that the pros of this surgery out weighed (no pun intended) the cons. So at least I did some good.
