I have a friend who has had nothing but problems with her band and she is finally getting it out and revising to RNY. The "policy" is three months between removal and than RNY, its policy and not based upon her stomach, band has only been on since October so i assume hasnt caused that much damage.
Anyway before I fully try to convince her to not let policy and insurance dictate her into having two surgeries, I am just wondering if band removal and RNY are possible at the same time. I know much more about band to sleeve.
TIA.

You know I'm always kind of torn by post like this. My first thought is always "that's so sad that they're having to have it removed so soon! It never even had a chance to work". But then I think......."maybe it's best. At least this way they're not wasting a lot of time on it." But regardless, it's really heart breaking how many ppl have put their hopes and dreams into their "least invasive" bands..........only to be disapointed.
One lady on OH just a few months ago only had hers in 10 days!!!

policy sounds like double dipping into insurance or not comfortable with skill to do this in one procedure.
there are many reasons (erosion comes to mind) that revision from lapband to another WLS needs to happen in 2 operations - policy isn't one of them.

Thats my thought Red, she is calling my surgeon this am, hopefully he can take her on. I know him well and if he says 2 stages, I will believe it.

I'm from the DS world, but I do know that some surgeons will do band removal and DS in one operation whenever possible, others insist on 2 separate operations. If it were me, I would go to the surgeon who was willing to at least try to do both at once, knowing that he might find some nasty surprise in there that would make it necessary to just get the band out and repair the damage.

I just got my band removed and revised to rny on 3/8.everything was done at the same time. I know of at least a dozen surgeons that do them all at once. Where do you live? I am in California, I can give you names if you like. I met with 5 surgeons before making my decision. Let me know if you have any questions.

Case studies suggest that a band should be removed for 6 weeks prior to a sleeve but with the RNY being so much higher up than a band I can't see any logical reason to wait.
Why an RnY anyway? The long term outcomes of it aren't as good and if she doesn't like the problems with the band she wont love dumping. Talk to her and have her look at the DS.

Good for her! I wish I had gotten my band removed right away. Things went wrong during Week 3 when I started soft foods. I look back & see it as an omen, but then hindsight is 20/20. As long as her band hasn't slipped or eroded & there isn't too much scar tissue, she can get her band removed & revise to another WLS during the same operation. It doesn't matter if she wants a sleeve, a RNY, or a DS.

Anyone out there had a revision from lap band to RNY dened by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. Nothing serious wrong with the lap band other than it didn't work and I throw up alot with food getting stuck. I've started the insurance request now and they are asking alot of questions. I can't continue with this band.
