I'm now 8 1/2 weeks out and I've been at the same weight for the last 3 1/2 weeks. I know that stalls happen and that they will pass and there's nothing I can do about them. I accept that. I'm eating about 90-120 gms of protein and drinking 64-80 oz of fluids a day. I have stayed away from carbs, except in the last week cause I can't resist a little Christmas treating but, I haven't by any means gone overboard on them... way under 50 carbs when I do have them. So, the big question is... how long can a stall last and what can I do to jump start the weight loss again, if anything? Do I just have to be patient (not a strong suit for me)? I need a reality check. Thanks in advance for your perspectives!

IF you are weighing more than once a week...it's gonna make you nuts...and an even BETTER option is to hide the scale or throw it away and only weigh when you see the doctor... Liz

Your not alone, I am 6.5 weeks out and haven't lost a thing in 2 weeks........I like you, know stalls happen, but wondered how long they last so thanks for asking this.......I have had some fruit, and some breaded chicken so that is why I think my loss has stopped but geez louise.......that is NOTHING compared to the carbs I ingested pre-op so I figured my weight would still come off!?

Liz I have been keeping away from the scale... no more than once a week after the 1st week because I could see I was in a stall. I appreciate the comment and advice but, it doesn't answer my question.

My last stall was 3.5 mos long- just lost 10 lbs in the last week. In my stalls my weight will jump up and down 5-8 lbs, then i lose. but i have been like that since surgery- my body doesn't want to give it up i guess (the fat that is). good luck and try not to worry about it too much.

I am in a semi- stall now, dropping .5 lb every 3rd day, finally the numbers are going down after a 2 week stall of nothing. My nut said they tell everyone in a stall to up the protein, and that fruit is not your friend, don't have any, just non starchy veggies and protein are approved. I added up the little carbs, since they want carbs listed daily with fluids, and protein in a daily journal. The small number carbs really add up quickly-- gummie fiber, or SF hard candies, or catsup, or Iron Chewy bites, or protein bars, or ..... they all added up to 45 for me. My carb limit is 50, when in a stall they advised. None left for food !! I added more real meat, and tuna with mayo, and bacon, and home made blended spinach soup with broth to keep my system moving. Adding more fats to your diet speeds transit time, and 80% are not absorbed she said. Can help with a stall. After 10 days on vacation I have not looked at a scale, home tomorrow, will be shocked either way, I know!! I reviewed my journal from doctor visit to dr visit, I had lost 11 lbs in 2 1/2 months, but didn't realize since it came off so slowly.

The following explanation is courtesy of Diana Cox.
Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet.
As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

I was looking for the same article by Diana, and EN beat me to it. It's a shame the people on the other site have their heads up their collective asses, and a bunch of other people will be missing out on Diana's expertise.

Thank you all! I appreciate the repost, EN. I have read that and know that my body is doing it's adjusting. That's really good information. I guess I'm just looking to know how long this adjustment could take. I'm hearing it could take several months which is really going to try my patience but, if that's what it has to be, then I guess I have to accept that. I'm looking for a range of time... say 2 days to 8 months, or something.

I am very similar to this. I drop about a pound a day for a week, then nothing for 3-4 weeks. My weight fluctuates within that time but it never reaches the lowest number i saw during the "drop phase" I have gotten so used to that i basically get on the scale expecting to never see lower numbers, but i have to weight myself because i have gain paranoya. I can accept the fluctuations but i would freak out if i didnt weight for a week and gained 10 pounds.

You'll notice them falling off before too long.

Again... it's nice to hear from others. Joanne, thanks for the encouragement. I do surely hope it doesn't last for months! I think I'd go bonkers and bounce off the walls, literally. I try to stay off the scales but, curiosity gets the best of me. I also don't trust how my clothes feel (do they really feel looser or did they just stretch with wear?) I suppose you could describe me as a bit of a doubting Thomas. I gotta see evidence in myself to believe it after all my years of not seeing results and/or seeing the results of gain rather than loss. I'm trying to be patient and keep to the right eating program (with a little deviation for this holiday). I'll wait until after New Years to weigh again. Thanks all for the support!

You hit the nail on the head there. We've all been conditioned by years of failed diets that it's only natural to feel that you will be the "one" the DS fails. I felt the same way and thankfully the psychologist prepared me for that.
Your body has to adjust and rebalance fluids every once in awhile, that's all that's going on. You will be amazed at how quickly you zoom down the scale in a couple weeks time. Hang in there!!

everyone's weight loss is a little different
during the year it took me to reach goal, I usually went for about three weeks with no loss, then a significant loss in week four. Repeat.
each month, I was certain that I was in a stall that couldn't be broken, yet just as I was about to shout out for support, I had another large loss.
I know that everyone recommends patience, yet it is so hard to be patient.
good luck

My stall broke last week, all I needed was a vacation, sleeping in till noon! The stress of staring at the stalled scale must have prevented weight loss!! ;-)
