"But band after care is HUGE. I think if you have good after care, the odds of you being successful with the band are greater. If you have shitty after care, you are screwed."
You are right on there, sister! I had my band placed in March 2005 in Mexico. At the time I thought that I had researched my options well. I was self employed with no insurance and decided to travel south of the border for the deeper cash discount. Unfortunately, I had no followup plan and it took me a while to come across the only bariatric practice in my area that would see Mexico patients.
"The key time is that phase right after surgery where you're super compliant and following the rules to a T. If your clinic works with you closely and proactively and you get fills and keep that ravenous hunger phase at bay, you might have a chance."
Again, right on! I lost 70lbs in the first 7 months post op. Since then I have had two children and regained 30lbs. I am now looking to have a revision to RNY for the same reason that I wanted the band-to lose weight and be healthier and happier, although after reading this board I am going to look into DS as well. Unfortunately my insurance only covers the band and RNY and I cannot afford to pay cash. Also, unfortunately, my insurance will exclude bariatric surgery as of 4/1/12, so for now I am on the 3 month medically supervised diet which will end 3/9/12 at which point in time my surgeon's office will request authorization to proceed with surgery. This is going to come down to the wire, and I'm beginning to make my plan B which will include seeking employment with a company that recognizes the benefits of bariatric surgery far exceed the expenses of obesity related illness.
