My surgeon initially told me he would make my CC 120cm because my BMI is only 41. Well I complained about that on OH, and he or somebody in his office read that and he called me at home (boy was I shocked!) and among other things we discussed this. He now says he still wants to make it 120cm, but if I really want it at 100cm, it is my choice. Of course he tried to talk me out of 100cm, so now I'm second guessing myself. I am more worried about regain after the surgery than losing too much weight, which is why I want it at 100cm.
What would you do?

It seems less and less likely that CC length is THAT important, especially 100 vs. 120. But I'd personally rather go with 100. Who is your surgeon? He sounds very reasonable.

The DS is a VERY powerful tool. What size is he suggesting for your sleeve? Either way, I agree with Diana, the 20 cm probably will not make that much of a difference.
Some doctors use the Hess method, which measures the total length of your intestine and then a percentage is taken from that for the CC. Since everyone is different, a person with a 100 cm CC could have the same effects of a person with a CC of 120 cm if the intestines were different in length respectively.

Hi, FWIW, Had a revision from RNY to DS at BMI of 42.5. Was given a cc of 100cm. Have done very well.

The surgeon I am using only does 75cm common channels. He likes them and sees good results from his patients who have it that sort so I am going with it.

My surgeon gave me a 150cc stomach, and a 100cc common channel. I feel like I can eat almost like I was pre-op. Oh, and my BMI was 41

It seems like 100 to 120 common channel is the norm. Mine gave me a 100 and said that he was being conservative. I'd rather have a longer common channel though. I don't want too too much malabsorbtion.

I've got the opposite. One surgeon I've seen wants to do a 75cm CC, as he says people re-gain otherwise, although he said I'll have constant diarrhea because I was sleeved a year ago and can eat more... WTH!! BTW this surgeon ONLY does 2 stage DSs!! My BMI's 32 and gaining (I have sleep apnea & serious knee problems - trying to avoid knee replacement). I don't want to get back over a BMI of 35 again! FYI the surgeon in question is on DSfacts. Any advice is much welcomed.

it is a good question to ask him about... but keep in mind that 20 cm is only 7.87inches. so it really isn't something that should make or break how your overall weightless will be.

When doing my research, I found out that the average female small intestine is about 750 cm's. What that means is you're getting about a seventh of what you had. I don't know that 20 cms is going to make or break anything. I took into consideration that I am 50 and won't repair or start to digest correctly as quickly as them young whipper snappers and asked for the longer channel. Couple 20 years and I'll be geriatric where vitamin malabsorbtion can happen anyway. Seemed smarter to me anyway. I plan to live to 100

Dr. Pomp gave me a 125 cm common channel. I was a lightweight (BMI of 37.5 on the day of surgery) so the longer than standard 100 cm made sense.

That 20 cm difference is not a biggie. I'd be having a fit if I felt watched or spied on by my surgeon's office, though!!

Dr. Buchwald gave me an 85 cm CC because he said I started out skinnier than most, lol! But, he typically does 75 cm on most patients. I am a revision from RNY. When I was revised to DS, my BMI was 41. I am doing quite well! I love my DS!

There is also the alimentary limb which comes into play when considering how much small bowel is doing absorbing. It is the common channel where fats are absorbed because fats need digestive juices in order to be absorbed and the digestive juices meet up with our food down in the common channel. However, other nutrients are absorbed all along the alimentary limb. So, you see it's not one seventh but actually much more, depending on how an individual surgeon divides the intestines during surgery. That varies from doctor to doctor, by the way. Hope that helps a bit.

My surgeon uses a 40fb and does 75cm or 100cm common channels. As I'm starting with a BMI of about 43 I'm getting a 100cm CC.

FWIW, Dr. Anthone gave me a 200 cm common channel. I lost 180 lbs in 18 months and I've had no problems keeping it off. I'm almost 3 years out and have not had any significant lab problems, either.

I have a 75cm cc and I'm very glad I do. I'm almost 12 years out. If I were you, I'd do the 100cm.

Mine is 75cm. I still haven't hit goal, so I think that the idea that it's too drastic is pretty funny, but that's just me.

Thanks for all your replies. You've given me food for thought, but I guess it's not as big a deal as I thought. I'm still going to ask for 100cm, I think.
EN, I pretty much stopped posting much on OH after getting the phone call from my surgeon. I'm glad we discussed what we did, but I definitely was shocked to get the call in the first place. I don't know if things from this board will get back to him, but I figure I got a little leeway at the beginning.

I had the same question. My surgeon is Dr. Stewart. I think I read that he does a standard 100 length common channel.

I had the same question. My surgeon is Dr. Stewart. I think I read that he does a standard 100 length common channel. I think Dr. Stewart actually told me he does 75 or 85 usually for women..I asked for 100 simply because I did not want to have major malabsorption issues (debatable, I know) since I am only 23.
