I am very sad that my high blood pressure appears to have returned.
Pre-op I had high blood pressure, enlarged left ventricle, high cholesterol and felt very very sick in general. I had my RNY 7/15/09 and lost 125 lbs and reversed all the problems that I had experienced. I did develop a cross addiction last June which was drinking a few beers- every night- but have been able to stay sober for 22 days now. I still feel great except for the occasional headache when I will then take my BP and find it near 150/90. This has been on going now(elevated BP) for about 4 weeks now. Sure would hate to have to go back on that Bystolic again. I still am an avid bicycle rider and have gained a few- 8 lbs back.
Has anyone else had return of co-morbids?

That sucks. So far, so good. My only pre-op issue that hasn't totally resolved is my back - 1000 percent better, but at least once a year, I seriously throw it out. I herneated 2 disks 15 years ago, so it is something that I need to be mindful off.
Hope you can get the BP controlled. I always hated taking the BP meds.

Glad to read WLS has improved your back. In the beginning mine felt worse, then it has shown improvement as I strengthened the core muscles. But this last week I seem to have developed gout in my right thumb. Damn it is painful. If it ain't one thing it's another. EXALT for being my first/only response to this post.

I would have responded but didn't have anything to add. My HBP didn't completely resolve but I have AFib so even if it did resolve, I'd still be on the pills. I think the weight exacerbated the condition and so has losing the weight but it exists regardless of my weight.
Have you had a lot of regain or anything? Sodium intake gone up? Serious stress levels? Anything that could lead to HBP?

Glad your Afib can be controlled by meds. I know it can be difficult for some people and they then need to take Coumadin in addition.
I have had a slight regain -8 pounds- but have lost 3 of those. I had gone below my goal weight in anticipation of the rebound, but still really hate to see it on the scale. Don't think this is the problem.
Thanks for the suggestions though. It could be work- which is always very stressful. Therapist suggested yoga which I am thinking of trying.

HBP can be genetic and made worse by being overweight. Your HBP may be genetic even though it seemed to be resolved.

Yes you are right about that. My mother and father both have hypertension. I guess I was just so happy that when it initially went away after the weight loss that when it returned I was disappointed. I have to learn to look at the health that I have gained and all that I can do now which was such a struggle before. Thank-you

My wife's hypertension returned after nearly 8 years post-op. She's on Lisinopril 40mg per day. It sucks.

Eight years!? Well just goes to show that no amount of time makes us immune to gain/return of co-morbids.

You may be deficient in some minerals - vitamins. Magnesium and calcium are some.. plus proteins...
Going detox - cold turkey - may mess up your systems for a while. I would try to increase the magnesium Are you constipated by any chance? constipation is one of side effect of not enough magnesium. Are you taking enogh calcium? How about D?
Getting enough proteins? low proteins (critically low) may casue edema (legs, body) and that way increasing the blood pressure.
When you were drinking beer - it is kidney stimulant - so when you stopped - it may be awhile before your body adjust the water in your system.
Making sure your follow low sodium diet and drink a lot of tea to clear any liquids... may also help.

Thank-you for the suggestions Hala I do tend to the low side with magnesium but calcium is usually good. I will look into having levels rechecked to be sure. Protein I get 70-80 Gms per day. No swelling, no constipation. Fluid intake is probably minimally adequate around 60-70 ounces daily. Will try increasing clear fluids also.
