Good Evening Everyone,
I'm extremely nervous , but on the bright side of things my c scan came back ok :)it was picking up scar tissue from a previous bout I had with pneumonia, I am cleared for surgery on Monday February 6th 2012 @ 11:00 am ( pray for me). your not going to believe this but I did not buy any post op items because I am completely confused as to what I'm supposed to get, I thought I knew but the nutritionist gives a totally diff weekly list. I dont know what to go by and I only have this weekend to get things rolling. Should I go. Y the nutritionist list or what new post ops are doing here?

Glad to hear everything is OK with your CT Scan. As for your other question, the answer depends on how your surgeon performs his DS. Hopefully some of Roslin's patients will come by with some concrete info, but if he uses a device called a Valtrac Ring then it will be absolutely necessary to follow his post-op guidelines. (The Valtrac Ring is used by some surgeons at an anastomosis in order to strengthen the connection during healing. The ring eventually dissolves and is is eliminated by the body.)

Not knowing what your Nuts list is, I will just tell you what I can remember that I stocked up on. Plain and vanilla soy milk. (surgeon recommended no milk for a couple of months to avoid intolerance) Cheeses, Boxed tomato soup (eaten with melted cheese and sour cream. Flavorings for drinks and uncaffeinated teas. Frozen shrimp, scallops and buffalo wings. (so little servings can be thawed) Yogurts, eggs, some hot cereals to be eaten in moderation. Did I send you my file of recipes and ideas for DS foods? If not send me a PM with your e-mail address.

Hi there, So glad your CT came back normal. Your big day is almost here!
Dr Roslin doesnt use a Valtec ring. He'll want you to be on full liquids until your first post op appointment, which is around 2 weeks after surgery. At that time he'll probably clear you to start soft foods.
You probably wont feel like eating much for the first two weeks. Make sure you have plenty of things to drink. Hydration is the most important thing. I found that plain water hurt my stomach early out, but I did fine drinking things like Diet Snapple and LifeWater Zero. You will have to find what works for you - AND - there's no sense really stocking up now because you're going to find that things you think you like taste funny for awhile, and vice versa.
Let me know if you have any questions or need anything.

Oh - those full liquids - they will tell you anything that runs off the back of a spoon. Things like protein shakes, soups without chunks of meat or veggie (I ate tomato with cheese), even some yogurts. As long as it's runny enough to run off the back of a spoon, and has no chunks, it's ok.
Next step from there is they will tell you that it's ok to eat if you can mash it with a fork - but that will come in a week or two.
ETA: That's what they will tell you, but I was eating scrambled eggs and cheese by about day 5. I asked because I was hungry and knew I would feel better with something solid, and Dr Roslin said it would be ok.

Yay so glad to hear that the CT results were fine and you are a go for surgery! Hummus is so yummy, I buy the giant tubs of it because my kids and I love it so much. Our favorite is Sabra Pine Nut. We buy it at Costco but I've seen it at pretty much any grocery store. Ditto for the Greek Yogurt, Costco carries at least 2 different kinds and even Target and Walmart have them now, particularly the Chobani brand.

Hummus is a middle eastern dip or topping made of chickpeas (garbanzo beans) and other flavorings. Look for the highest protein and fat content Greek yogurt and the lowest sugar. For some reason the never make full fat/low sugar blends. I guess because It is only good for DSers.

Since you are on the east coast, the grocery stores will be different.... but we have Fred Meyer, and their house brand has "carb smart" which is lower sugar & higher protein. I think that Yoplait also has some sort of a greek yogurt as well. (House brand is like 1/2 the price, which is nice) HTH

It is TIME! So exciting.
In reading the experiences of others, I would suggest that you buy little bits of lots of different things. It seems that changing tolerances is a major obstacle.
I also noticed that many people quickly hit the mall for their exercise. So you can get more of the things you like. If life gets complicated, it will have its unique needs and there is no planning for that!
I will be rooting for you.

Hi LuLu, I'm excited and scared, what I have decided to do was to use the nutritionist list to start And tweak as needed. I can't believe I'm actually getting a second chance on life!

I stocked up on greek yogurt (had it plain and added splenda), I also had lots and lots of applesauce--it goes down smoothly like a protein shake and I found that the little bit of sugar did me good for the first 2 weeks--I ate the 'no sugar added' apple sauce. You can usually get egg drop soup or even just war wonton soup broth from any chinese restaurant--it doesn't have to be home made. I kept muscle milk (it's non-dairy despite the name) chilled and ready to sip by my bedside. Popsicles (I ate regular ones not sugar free because I needed some sugar to keep my blood sugar normal) were great since they melt as you eat them. I also had apple juice in the house and mixed it with 1/2 water--it was all that i could drink for the first 2 weeks. If you still get a period, make sure to take some maxi pads and or tampons with you to the hospital and have some at home--it's normal to have a period come on after surgery. I wish I could think of more!!!!

I'm waiting to hear from Marie (AKA lovy19). She said she'd have a nurse call me when she was out of surgery. I tried her cell phone a bit ago and it's going straight to voicemail. My guess is that she won't be able to talk today--I was in a very thick fog the entire day of my surgery. But as soon as I hear from the nurse, I'll be posting an angel update!
