Hello Everyone, I have not been here in about a week, was sick with the flu. Today I received a phone call From the doctor at Lenox that did my blood work and chest x ray, he states my potassium is very low and I need to bring it up before surgery, he told me to drink at Least four glasses of orange juice daily starting today up until day of surgery, that's not the worse part of the phone call, next he asked me if I had a chest x ray in the past I told him years ago when I had a cold and they discovered my lungs were clouded, they took so many tests, tuberculosis, and aids test, which all came back negative. He went on to ask if I cough a lot and lose my breathe quickly I said no to the coughing but I do have shortness of breath due to excess weight. I then asked him why he stated because he see scarring on my chest but dont know if it is due to the Lapband. He then said he is ordering a cat scan for me to come in and do tomorrow to check my lungs but wasn't sure if it was necessary because it could be nothing. I went on to ask him what does a cat scan look for and he stated cancer which he dont think it is among other things. I asked him could these things prevent me from having surgery, he stated yes that's why I need cat scan and also need to bring my potassium levels up. Damn when it rains it pours because I am now terrified that I may have cancer or maybe something worse

I hate to hear that you're going through all this. Hopefully it's nothing but he needs to make sure. I'm glad that he's taking the time to make sure you're healthy enough for surgery. Ill be sending you well wishes and hope that everything works out. BIG HUGS

I am not making light of your concerns but Dr. Roslin is an ultra-cautious surgeon and wants to make sure your lungs are OK.
IF and I am stressing the IF there were something wrong, you need to know because the sooner the better!
Holler at me next year and let me know if the stress is worth the surgery!!
I know the answer.

Hi Shales, thank you so much for replying, and you are right it is best for me to find out now if something is wrong. I am trying hard not to stress about it but my nerves are wrecked.

Lovy - I have a pretty good idea what you are going through. I was 5 days away from having the DS surgery in 2002 and my routine chest xray turned into a nightmare. My surgeon also sent me for a CT and in my case the report came back that it was strongly suggestive of lung cancer. I was a wreck emotionally at the time, all I could picture was my kids growing up without a mother. However after multiple biopsies and even a more recent surgery, I don't have cancer, thank god. In your case, your surgeon already stated he doesn't think you have cancer, but of course he needs to double check. I will be hoping you get the all-clear after your CT scan. When is it scheduled for?

I'm sorry you are stressing like this. I want to concur with what Shales says; try not to panic. The good surgeons do want to be cautious, make sure they have everything covered. The positive is sometimes they DO find out things before surgery - not life threatening- but things that it's good for us to know so we can fix, for both surgery and life in general. So the flipside could be, because you're having surgery, they might have found something you wouldn't have known about that can be corrected. I'm hoping for you it's minor, keep us updated.

I'm so sorry to hear about this medical scare. I'm praying for you that this will prove to be nothing and OJ will fix your potassium right up. I know it's hard not to freak out, but at the very least this is something that is now brought to your attention and can be explored further to rule out the scary junk. I know there aren't any words that can be said to you to take away your fear, but please know that taking it one step at a time and dealing with things as they come is the best advice I've ever received for all my medical scares of the past.

When is it scheduled for? Hi thank you so much for sharing your story with me. The doctor did a rush with my insurance company and was able to get cat scan scheduled for tomorrow February 2. 2012 @ 12:30 pm. He also called me and spoke with me to calm me down, which I thought was very nice of him. He stated because I had pneumonia in the past he is pretty sure that is what the scar tissue on my chest is but he must do the C Scan because if he ignores it and the anesthesiologist look at the chest x ray they will not do anything until a C Scan is done. So I am going to try my best to think positive.

Scary but look at it this way. Your DS is already bringing you gifts - whatever it is can be dealt with and you will have better insight into your body.
Hang in and keep us posted.

Lovy,
I would be scared to death too! The others are right, though. The doctor is just trying to do a good job & make sure that you are in the best shape possible before surgery. Hopefully the results of your CT scan will be okay and this will all just be a bad memory.
If you don't want to drink gallons of OJ, you can also eat sweet potatoes, regular white potatoes, yogurt, broccoli, cantalope, & bananas. Those are all high in potassium. Make sure they re-check your labs before surgery. If your potassium is way too low or way too high, it can cause problems with your heart. I'm not trying to scare you about something else. I just want you to know why it's important.
Best wishes, Shelli

As for the C Scan I go today at 12:30, I really do hope Im terrified for nothing. I'll keep everyone posted.

Hang in there. Chances are it's nothing, but it's a good thing to be cautious. The results might make a difference in how they decide to treat you, so you're better off knowing. Also, you wouldn't want to show up for surgery and have the anesthesiologist question it, like Dr Roslin said could happen. That actually happened at my brother's DS (not Chest Xray, but other issue), and Roslin had to confer with the anesthesiologist for a long time before they decided to move ahead. He's just looking out for you.
Hugs, and please keep us updated.

Sending you hugs and positive energy.
