Just wondering if legally there is a timeframe that a pcp's office has for submitting a referral? It has been 2 weeks and mine has yet to send in my referral and they keep giving me some 'we're busy' excuse.

I think that would be a question for your insurance company.

My surgeons office had a template written up (my pcp didn't use it) that had all pertinent and needed information. Might see if your surgeon has that and use it as an opportunity to poke your PCP into action... me

I don't think it is illegal, but instead just bad service.

Yeah they keep doing this to me. Asked for a referral to a bariatric surgeon may 2011 and still trying. Dr said yes but office is being terrible. It just to me feels unacceptable. Was just wondering if there is anything I can do. I even faxed them the directions 2 weeks ago. Maybe I have to go down there in person.

I would have the surgeon request your PCP's medical records. You'll have to sign a consent form. Your PCP has 15 business days in most instances to send records. The surgeon's office can then work the referral in reverse. They have more vested interest in getting things done. If your PCP doesn't send records in the time frame mandated by the state board, you can report them for that. There is nothing to report from a referral standpoint.

If I were you I would make a pleasant, but firm, request to your surgeon, not his staff. If that doesn't work, then tell him you're transferring your business to another, more interested, medical supplier.
A letter might be the best way to get his attention; 8 months wait is ridiculous.

If nothing else youve made me appreciate my PCP...that mans so lazy and complacent all he does is try to refer me to someone else. Hes an internist and yet, I could have the sniffles and he would rather refer my to an ear nose throat guy than to treat me lol.

Stand there and bitch until they do what they are supposed to. I would (and have had to in the past, to get things done). Or I would find a generic referral form, type it to siut your needs, make an appointment with him, and have him sign it there in front of you. Then fax it to your surgeon yourself.

Believe me, I would do the referral myself. The lady showed me how it's done, and it's done on a website you have to log in so no luck there. The 8 months is ridiculous, I know. But I'm afraid to change drs as I've been at this charade since 2008. 2008-2011 I was going through pcp after pcp and all of them said no to wls. Then I got one to say yes, but she has left the practice. The other doc agreed to refer me as well so I guess that is good (though I did have to jump through hoops). I just want a consultation with a DS dr but I wish the drs office knew how important it is to me.
