What are your travel tips for making trips enjoyable? Easy short cuts for taking protein, mixing supplies, supplements, eating out...... all pertaining to D.S. life on the road, or by air. Love to know how you all do it.
We have taken 2 trips in the last 5 months, post surgery. One driving for 2 days before reaching our destination, the other flying, with restrictive weight allowances for luggage. Protein mixes weigh more than my clothes!!! I always seem to over pack. More and more D.S. friendly meal products and foods are available in city locations, at drugstores, and supermarkets. Pre trip research locating these places would have saved me a lot of hassle.
Thanks for your help,
sandra ;-)

I have taken several trips since my DS. The difference is where you are going.
If I know I will be staying at a hotel, then I prefer just to pack protein bars. You can pick up beef jerky and yogurt anywhere. I also make sure that I can eat enough protein. At conventions they always have fruit and cheese to snack on so I make sure that I grab some cheese.
If I am staying with family I weight out a shake a day and place in a baggie with the date on it. That way I am only taking enough baggies for the number of days I am staying and not the big 5lb container of protein powder.

Thanks for your help, sandra ;-) If I bother to take a protein supplement along when I travel, I take only the number of individual, premeasured servings I'll need. Where possible I buy them that way. But I don't use a lot of that kind of stuff. Even if I were inclined to make fancy shakes, I wouldn't bother when traveling. I take the vites I need plus a couple days extra, no more. Generally I pack some nuts and a few protein wafer bar things so I have something in reserve as needed. I prefer to shop on site, but realize that isn't always possible depending on where you're going. Other things I always pack: flushable wipes travel candle and matches small air freshener spray to keep in the bathroom (in addition to the one I carry in my purse) a small emergency medication supply with a bit of Immodium, Pepto, pain meds and such I've never needed it, but I'm a cautious sort, so I have a change of undies in reserve at all times. Heaven forfend a blip in my diet should bring about a shart.

I almost always have a bag of beef jerky with me. Cheese sticks/string cheese are pretty readily available in most convenient shops, either at an airport or on the road... everything else I can hold out for a meal somewhere. The time's I've traveled with protein powder, I never used it. I don't even bring it any longer.
Oh, and I always have a couple tums in my pocket with my vitamins..travelling or not.

Protein powder in ziplock bags & shaker bottle always... I can always find coffee to add it to. Beef jerky at convenience stores or cheese sticks (pretty easy to find refrigerated) Or nuts (if I'm feeling put up in because I want a candy bar I get chocolate covered nuts.) Fast food -- taco bell taco, chicken tenders but I try to avoid any of it if possible. Cracker barrel & waffle house are fast too

I just hit the road and go. As long as I have my vites, I'm good. I have 2 of those 7 day organizers, one for AM and another for PM. If I need more than a weeks worth of vites, I put the extras in sandwich bags. They fit easily in a backpack, purse, or suitcase. Most of the time I carry them with me. They can lose my luggage but not my vitamins.
If it's a long plane trip, I usually seriously low carb for a couple days in advance and carry air freshener in my purse. Just in case. I usually carry jerky and a couple protein bars in my purse. Remember if you are going out of the country, the jerky usually has to be gone by the time you land.
That's about it! I've never had a hard time finding protein anywhere. If I'm low for a day or so, I don't worry about it. Luckily, it's high protein over time for us. If I am good on protein 95% of the time, I don't worry much about being lacking for a couple days. I can and will make up for it down the road and I'm not willing to give up travel. I love it too much!

My recommendation is to be extra vigilant about the number and type of carbs you eat. Remember that everyone gets gas on the airplane, but you will get even more, so eat correctly for days before you leave as well as your entire trip. I carried some protein bars with me for emergency use. (Quest bars?) Make certain that there are no manitol or sorbitol type sweeteners in them or you will be miserable. I went to the south of France at 10 months out and from there we took long car trips as far as Florence Italy so I had loads of DS friendly foods in the car. A year later, I took a cruise and took lots of land excursions. The water bottles and snacks are a necessity. Many have already been listed but also nuts, dried meats like salami, and of course lots of bottles water. Bring a large empty water bottle with you to the airport that you can fill at the water fountain to be certain of good hydration during the flight. Try to get your seat near the restroom just in case. Have fun!

I like to keep a couple Quest protein bars in my purse so I have something to snack on. They are great because they hold up really well, there's no chocolate coating, so they don't melt. I also keep beef jerky in the car, or slim jims. The smoked almonds are a yummy snack and come in single serve pacs that fit good into a purse. I have one of the 30 day pill organizers, so I just take my vites for the days I'll be gone. For meals, I haven't found a place I couldn't order something from. Even at McDonalds, I get a Big Mac with no bun. They put it in the plastic salad container so you can eat it with a fork.

I travel very frequently for work, by plane and long car trips. Earlier out, when I was doing daily protein shakes, like say the first 9-12 months, I would take protein powder with me. I would buy the individual packets of Champion, and only take as many that I needed, plus a few extra. Didn't take up much room at all. The individual packets are more expensive, but I liked the convenience. I suppose you could make your own packets using Ziploc bags, too.
Another thing I did was use it as a prime opportunity to try Vitalady's samples. I would pack a few of her samples along and use those.
Later out, I have more stomach capacity so I dont need to rely on shakes. I just make sure I order wisely. Sometimes if I'm in a hurry and there aren't good restaurant choices my meals are from a supermarket - most have pre-made hardboiled eggs, cheeses, things like that. I also pop in and buy 1/4 pound of ham or turkey, and cheese and eat that. Starbucks also sells a premade fruit and cheese box, and a box with salami and cheese. Each have about 20g protein. I also stash a few protein bars in my purse at all times for emergencies, like if I'm stuck on a plane and such.
I have no problems at all making sure I have what I need available. I also travel with my daily pill organizers, enough for each day I'm gone, plus a few extra. The other thing I do is to keep about a weeks worth of pills in my glove compartment in my car, just in case I'm out the door and forget my own.

I bake parmesan crisps on my silicone baking sheet. I buy the DiGiorno shaved parmesan, and bake about 2T in a pile (I use an egg-ring to skootch it into a round pile). When they cool, they all fit back into the original container neatly, and need no refrigeration. I go through these like mad at work, too.
Beef Jerky is available everyplace now, and Justin's Nut Butters in little packets, too. And I always bring my supply of green tea mix sticks for my water bottle.
