So, I'm not approved for insurance yet, I have 3 more months of diet visits. However, I have a question... Every year my husband and I go to a zombie themed trigun fun shoot. (yes. I am weird. I know this.). It is tradition for us, and very important to me. It's on June 23rd this year. I could have surgery as early as the end of April but I'm wondering if I'll be recovered enough to go, walk all day and shoot? I'd have about 7-8 weeks of recovery depending on scheduling. Or do you think I shroud wait to have it at the end of June? I can't offer you any advice but I wanted to just say that the zombie themed shoot sounds like so much fun! You're not weird, just creative!

Ok. Important question...are you open or lap.
Other important question, are you shooting the zombies or are you one and someone is shooting you?

If it is that important to you I would suggest that you wait until after the shoot, since it is a tradition you know how much stamina you'll need. While nearly two months may be enough to recover from surgery, you don't know how your recovery from the surgery will go, and you don't know how much stamina you will have while your body is adjusting to your new diet.
I understand your dilemma, while I was anxious to have my surgery done, I was approved in October but waited until January because I wanted to make it through the holidays without having to worry about having my surgery and recovery (mainly because my sister and I host holiday parties and we knew we were having family visiting for two weeks at the end of December and I was traveling out of state for my procedure)
Good luck whichever way you decide

You could be down 30lbs or more in 8 weeks which I imagine would make all that activity easier but I understand its no guarantee that you would be ship shape by then...hard call to make, whatever you decide, we'll be here cheering you on!

My surgery was laparoscopic and I know I would not have been up for that sort of exertion at eight weeks out. Just standing to iron clothes caused an intensely painful burning in my shoulders/back, and cramps in my calves. And I still needed a nap nearly every day at that time. Clearly, YMMV, but if you really don't want to miss the Zombie shoot (I can't believe I typed those words ) I'd suggest waiting.

Hard to say. I was 50 when I had my surgery, starting at around 290 lbs. 5 weeks out, I had a cross country business trip, including flying to DC, and then NY and giving a talk for an hour. 8 weeks out, I flew to Paris for a week, 2 days were meetings, and the other days were wandering around Paris with a friend who was between chemo treatments, so we were both taking it somewhat easy - while trying to do as much as we could. 2.5 months out, I flew BACK to London for another meeting, and my husband and I turned the 2 day meeting into a 2.5 week vacation - lots of sightseeing and walking.
Walking - probably OK, with breaks, so long as it's flat and not too hot.

You *could* have the picture perfect recovery that many of us have. You *could* have the misery that these two are currently having and that some other folks have suffered. Or you could just still feel as a limp as a washed out dishrag three months postop. Don't be in such a hurry to race to the OR.

Ok. Important question...are you open or lap. Other important question, are you shooting the zombies or are you one and someone is shooting you? Open, and I'll be the one shooting lol . And they're paper zombies, sometimes metal plates. I'd be shooting .22's and a 12 gauge shotgun. You would be OUT OF YOUR MIND to try to do that up to 8 weeks postop if you don't HAVE to do it to survive. Open and using a shotgun? Um, don't be stupid. OWIE *shudder*.

ASSUMING a textbook recovery, you start out post op at your original weight PLUS the burden of being post-op, not eating, feeling weak and nauseous. Over the coming weeks, you start healing, and the weight starts coming off. One day, you realize that you feel SO much better than the day before, PLUS you are 35 lbs lighter, you feel like you are superhuman. That is a great part of the ride. But you still need to pace yourself, and you can't predict when that feeling is going to kick in. For me, it was around two months out - the trip to Paris and the moderate walking I did with my friend prepared me well for the longer and more intense vacation with my husband a few weeks later (although he's got bad knees and I could outpace him pre-op - but I didn't have any endurance).
Yes, I got tired - so then I would stop, rest for 10 min and be back on my way.

Enjoy your tradition! Get those Zombies!!!

You've gotten plenty of top shelf feedback here already I have more than a few friends who are of the zombie lovers and so I have to ask, WHERE is this event that sounds like paintball meets zombies, and, ends in a pig roast?! (this is a jewish girl who loves a pig roast) You might be up to going by then, but you definitely won't be able to enjoy it full tilt boogie - from the degree of exercise to the feasting on the roasted pig. Being that it's quite the anticipated ritual, I say have at it, one helluva big hurrah before surgery! And then you'll have 2 things to look forward to and plan for :-)

I guess it depends how quickly you recover and all. I was in Disney, pushing a stroller, 4 months after my RNY. I did fly to Texas 7 weeks after my DS revision, but I was so wiped out that I couldn't do much more than sit in the car and take in scenery.

If the Zombie shoot is really important (and it sounds like it is), then I would probably wait until after. Even if you don't have complications, you might be very tired. Shooting uses your stomach muscles and that would not have been my choice 2 months out!

I LOVE to dance and was dying to get out of the house at about 7 wks post op. I danced 2 song before i had to sit. It is a hard feeling to explain. Kinda whoozie but definitely a feeling that if i didnt sit soon i might pass out. Once i sat i was fine and did stay out for about 2 hrs. At 9 wks out i could do all day events at hubs rugby games but even that isnt walking all day:)
THe DS recovery for me has been mind blowing. I has lapband surgery and even tho i knew this surgery is huge compared to lapband i was not prepare for how tried i would be. Im just now starting to feel normal at 10 weeks out:)
Good luck with your choice!
